Infant mortality is the passing of a child before his/her first birthday. With the fifth highest infant mortality rate in the United States, infant mortality is increasingly becoming a larger and more detrimental problem, especially in South Linden, Ohio. Out of every one thousand children in South Linden, 20.3 of them will not make it to their first birthday. However, despite the staggering statistics, many are not aware of the issue, and counter infant mortality, including those who live in South Linden. CRP produces data visualizations, called DataBytes, on a monthly basis. DataBytes provide a snapshot of a topic of importance to our community, region, or state today. The topics cover a wide range of social and economic issues such as student debt, carbon footprint, food security, child care, etc. DataBytes can be lighthearted, as in our April Fool's DataBytes, or introduce our audience to a serious but relevant issue, such as our Distracted Driving DataByte. These sharable graphics are great conversation starters, but also serve as resources to interesting or important local information.

Almost one-quarter of the U.S. college students are also parents. Many student parents are single parents, grew up in households with limited financials resources, or are the first in their families to attend college. Stable, quality, affordable housing is a critical foundation for student parents to be successful but there are limited housing options for this student subgroup. Supporting high-quality early learning opportunities for children of student parents is also a priority based on evidence from two-generation approaches to breaking the cycle of poverty.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are major factors contributing to both physical and mental illness. ACEs include: physical/sexual abuse, neglect, domestic/community violence, parental separation/divorce, household substance abuse, household mental illness. ACEs in a culture of poverty furthers: unemployment/underemployment, social isolation, poor housing, early death, mental illness, higher suicide, high risk behaviors, alcohol substance abuse, physical illness, a navigational quagmire. However, people do build resiliency. People do recover.

Communities of practice are developed as a means of sharing and perpetuating organizational learning. While the literature is filled with individual studies that focus on knowledge management, organizational learning, communities of practice, and Six Sigma outcomes, it does not illustrate the inherent relationship between these thoughts and practices. Respect, whether viewed as value by some or a specific point of reference by others, causes one to wonder whether it is a learned behavior or detail that one earns. In review of this topic and asking groups of individuals from multiple generational eras, the results vary as to whether respect can be taught or even deserved based upon one’s behaviors and actions.
