Elder neglect, instead of abuse, forms an obvious focus in studying changes before irreversible damages are made to the families over time to examine the family cohesion factors as well as to identify interpersonal or helping relationships among elder parents and adult children, in particular during the time of sickness when an older person requires intensive care. Modernization marked the progress of society and posed various changes to human life as well as the epidemiological transition. Improvements in public health care, living conditions, income and the control of infectious diseases were important factors in the first half of the twentieth century that led to the increases in life expectancy, while in the second half it was improvements in social conditions, health technologies such as antibiotics, and widespread immunization. 中國雲南山區服務研習計劃由德勤中國(香港)和嶺南大學服務研習處共同組織開展。該計劃的主要目的之一是研究山村少數民族和社區的可持續發展情況。其中包括保護本地獨特文化，在公共教育、衛生和經濟發展方面提供必要的輔助，環境保護，以及作為社區長壽基石的可持續發展。

該計劃於2007年啟動，為期三年，至2010年結束。該三年計劃旨在研究該社區在教育、衛生和經濟方面的需求，並提供必要幫助。在2008年至2009年(計劃第二年)，該計劃與嶺南大學亞太老年研究中心合作，在該村進行健康狀況研究，涵蓋該山村社區的衛生條件和初級衛生保健體系。研究通過了解雲南省格章村村民的健康狀況，深入研究中國農村的醫療衛生水平。村民健康狀況體現該村的社會人口統計特點、環境和個人風險因素、問題應對能力以及衛生保健體系的覆蓋情況。調查結果將用於評估村民的健康需求，協助政府提供更合理的醫療衛生服務，並監督健康改善的成果。
