In 2013, Deisy García, a young immigrant from Guatemala filed two domestic violence complaints against her husband. In one of them she said she was scared he would killed her. The New York City Police Department never translated it and eight months later, Garcia's husband ended up killing her, along with their two daughters. Exploring García's case, this story explores how the access to interpretation services can mean a matter of life or death for Spanish-speaking victims of domestic violence.

A working subgroup was sent up in 2015 in response to the TU4D Design Team requirements. The task of the subgroup was to conduct a reviews of ITB, DIT AND ITT placement structures and develop a draft policy based on the combined internship polices. The subgroup was additionally informed by the HEA paper ‘Towards a Future Higher Education Landscape’ (February 2012), ‘Work Placement A Best Practice Guide for Employers’ (AHECS), DIT’s working group report (2012), the REAPS report ‘Work Placement in Third Level Education’ (2011). The purpose of this study is to explore whether being named as a party-defendant in federal civil rights litigation is correlated with other types of police misconduct. As part of a larger study of police officers who were arrested during the years 2005-2011, the names of each officer arrested (N = 5,545) were cross-checked against the master name index in the federal court Public Access to Courts Electronic Records (PACER) system. The findings indicate that more than one-fifth of the arrested officers (22.2%, n = 1,232) were named as a party-defendant in one or more federal court civil actions pursuant …

In today’s presentation, we will make a case for how and why a critical disability studies perspective would deepen and strengthen our knowledge about the lifelong experiences of siblinghood. We have a wide range of goals today and will present for you some of our current thinking on this relatively small, but expanding interest in sibling-disability research. First, we highlight how sibling disability research has differed and been narrower in focus than other research about siblings where neither has a disability and trace the reason for this to institutionalisation and deinstitutionalisation. Radio has been a companion of and crucial partner in democratic social change in Bolivia since its arrival to the country. Many of its inherent characteristics make it an ideal medium for communication of messages made for and by marginalized groups that are otherwise excluded from the production of and access to information. Historically, radio has been implemented in processes of progressive resistance to authority, in response to the oppression of the groups that community radio seeks to represent. Tracing Temporal Changes In The Human Dimensions Of Forest Insect Disturbance On The Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, Hua Qin, Courtney G. Flint, A. E. Luloff

A rapidly growing literature on the human dimensions of forest disturbance by insects has emerged over the past decade. As a result, the diverse social and economic impacts of forest disturbances and their implications have become increasingly understood. However, little research has assessed the temporal dynamics of community experience, perceptions, and actions related to changing forest landscapes and risks. Using longitudinal survey data from 2004 to 2008, this study examines the changing human dimensions of forest disturbance in the context of Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula spruce bark beetle outbreak.
