Tinsley Bottom Tennessee: An Historical Reconstruction Utilizing Oral Narrative Traditions, Rebecca Morse

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Tinsley Bottom lies adjacent to the Cumberland River in Jackson and Clay Counties in north central Tennessee. The rich rolling bottomland totaling approximately two thousand acres on the south bank of the Cumberland River lured several families to purchase land and take residence there in the late 1700s and early 1800s.

The history of Tinsley Bottom is not found in written records or annals of Tennessee history. No person of reknown sprang from the cultural context of this community. Yet tales are told of how Daniel Boone hunted in the Bottom and slept in a cave overlooking the River, and …

Cultural Values, Educational Methods And Small Group Communicator Styles In The United States And The People's Republic Of China, Lynda Lee Densem

Dissertations and Theses

The increasing contact between countries in today’ shrinking world indicates an urgent need for effective communication between cultures. Fundamental to satisfying this need is an understanding of cultural value systems--what factors have created them and how they interact within society. This paper addresses the value systems of two countries that recently have found themselves in positions of expanding contact, the United States (US) and the People's Republic of China (PRC). The value systems of the cultures are traced from their transference to the young of the cultures through formal educational systems to their effect on learning and perceptual sets. General …

Professor Norman Cazden of the Univ. of Maine at Orono has collected a practical, very singable assortment of folk music and ballads from the Catskill Mountain bards who used to sing at Camp Woodland in Phoenicia. His choice of material has been guided by what has proven useful and enjoyable. Many of the songs have served for dramatization, dance and other group treatments in schools, in outdoor camping, for stage projects and for just plain singing. Originally included as part of Prof. Cazden's ABELARD FOLKSONG BOOK (long out of print), A CATSKILL SONGBOOK had been republished by Purple Mountain Press …

Basic Beliefs About A New Human Life And Ethical Judgment: Family Planning Field Workers In Taiwan, Geroge P. Cernada Jan 1979

Basic Beliefs About A New Human Life And Ethical Judgment: Family Planning Field Workers In Taiwan, Geroge P. Cernada

Asian Language & Literature Occasional Papers

INTRODUCTION

Taiwan's place among the population hierarchy remains dwarfed by the shadow of China's nearly billion people. Yet Taiwan's population exceeds 17 minion and as such cis larger than that of most African, (e.g., Ghana, Kenya, Uganda), most Latin American (e.g., Chile, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemela, Venezuala), and many Asian countries. Indeed, its exceptional family planning efforts, begun in 1964 on an island-wide basis, have been instrumental in lowering its natural increase rate from 30 per 1,000 in 1963 to 19 by 1973. This drop from 3% to less than 2% in a decade has been a remarkable achievement. The island, …
