The investigator draws on the limited research about mental health in other immigrant and refugee populations as a basis for the …

Co-Occurring Disorders: An Outpatient Latent Class Analysis, Kathleen H. Darby Aug 2007

Co-Occurring Disorders: An Outpatient Latent Class Analysis, Kathleen H. Darby

Doctoral Dissertations

Over the past 20 years researchers and health care practitioners have come to realize in addition to high prevalence rates, individuals with co-occurring disorders did not represent a homogeneous group (Drake, et al., 1998: 2001; Lehman, et al., 1994: 2000; Mueser, et al., 2000). It is essential to consider the heterogeneity of co-occurring disorders when considering new treatment modalities. Thus, it becomes pivotal to identify these differences for treatment approaches and program goals. Research shows that heterogeneity of treatment populations can be reduced through empirically-derived homogeneous groups based on multivariate analysis (Ries, et al., 1993; Lehman et al., 2000; Mueser, …

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between environmental …

Validation Of The Air Force Family Needs Screener, Wendy J. Wyse

Doctoral Dissertations

The Air Force Family Needs Screener (FNS) has been utilized as a screening measure for risk of both child maltreatment and intimate partner violence (IPV) within the context of a military primary prevention program called the New Parent Support Program (NPSP) since 1988. However, this measure has only been validated with the initial pilot samples used in its development. The current study sought to assess the reliability, dependability, factor structure and predictive capacity of the FNS using a new sample of mothers. In addition, this study sought to develop shortened versions of the FNS in order to determine if they …

Effects Of Experiential Learning On Face To Face And Multimedia Learning Environments In The Acquisition Of Active Listening Skills, Juan Enrique Huerta Wong Aug 2007

Effects Of Experiential Learning On Face To Face And Multimedia Learning Environments In The Acquisition Of Active Listening Skills, Juan Enrique Huerta Wong

Social Work Dissertations

Comparison studies between Technology or Multimedia Learning Environments and Face-to-Face (F2F) Learning Environments in social work education usually show that technology works as well as F2F environments. However, they also suggest they are not interchangeable, but are dependent upon educational approaches. Otherwise, experiential learning as a main educational approach has been adopted from Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) guidelines without strong evidence of its effectiveness. A 2X2 Nonrandomized Multiple Comparison Groups Design with pretest from each group evaluates the effectiveness of two different Learning Environments (multimedia versus F2F) and two different Teaching Techniques (experiential versus exposure plus discussions) in …

Family-Friendly Workplace Culture, Flexibility, And Workplace Support For Dependent Care : The Perspectives Of Human Resource Professionals, Katherine June Huffstutter Jun 2007

Family-Friendly Workplace Culture, Flexibility, And Workplace Support For Dependent Care : The Perspectives Of Human Resource Professionals, Katherine June Huffstutter

Dissertations and Theses

Integration of family responsibilities and employment demands is challenging for all families, but particularly for those families with extraordinary care requirements of children with mental health disabilities. Utilization of workplace supports, such as flexible work arrangements, has been identified in the work-family literature as an important indicator of organizational responsiveness to employee's family needs (Allen, 2001; Eaton, 2003; Hammer, Neal, Newsom, Brockwood, & Colton, 2005; Secret, 2000). A better understanding of which organizational conditions may improve utilization of available family-friendly supports by employees caring for children with mental health disorders can improve work-life integration for these families. This study examines …

The Use Of Verbal And Written Emotional Expression For Empowerment And Healing In Clinical Social Work Practice, Laurie Lynn Dix Schmit May 2007

The Use Of Verbal And Written Emotional Expression For Empowerment And Healing In Clinical Social Work Practice, Laurie Lynn Dix Schmit

Masters Theses

Social work practice often demonstrates ambivalence about emotions and emotional expression. Forced by managed care to keep clinical work short-term, and having removed the depth of psychoanalytic and other psychodynamic approaches, social workers have retreated from attending to the emotional life of clients, and now focus mainly in the realm of thoughts and behaviors. By integrating literature from other disciplines with social work, and incorporating contemporary thought on the topic, this paper addresses the importance, challenges and rewards of utilizing emotional expression in clinical social work practice. We find that, by addressing the emotions of our clients, we begin to …

Family Participation : Exploring The Role It Plays In Outcomes For Youth With Serious Emotional Disorders, Jodi Lee Kerbs May 2007

Family Participation : Exploring The Role It Plays In Outcomes For Youth With Serious Emotional Disorders, Jodi Lee Kerbs

Dissertations and Theses

The participation of families of children with emotional or behavioral disorders is increasingly seen as an essential component of children's mental health services. Although it is frequently discussed in the literature, family participation has not been a major focus of most research surrounding youth with serious emotional disorders (SED). This gap in research is particularly evident in the literature related to those youth who are also in the juvenile justice system. This study explored the concept of family participation in the context of services for youth with SED and examined the relationship between family participation in treatment planning and child …

Scale Validation Of Co-Parenting In Foster Couples, Donna J. Cherry May 2007

Scale Validation Of Co-Parenting In Foster Couples, Donna J. Cherry

Doctoral Dissertations

Co-parenting, the joint participation and responsibility of a set of adults in childrearing (Talbot & McHale, 2004), contributes to our understanding of how family systems influence child outcomes. Co-parenting is more proximal to parenting than many measures of marital relationships in that it focuses only on those dyadic processes that are specific to parenting (e.g., child-rearing agreement, support/undermining of parenting practices). Because of this focus, it is also a more flexible construct for thinking about non-traditional parenting arrangements, such as family foster care. Rooted in a family systems theoretical framework, the unique contribution of co-parenting may help us better …

The Chasm Between Two Parallel Worlds, Brandi Harline May 2007

The Chasm Between Two Parallel Worlds, Brandi Harline

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

In much of the research conducted on military issues, problems are identified years, sometimes decades, before the military publicly acknowledges these concerns; an example of this is sexual assault, which scholars discussed for over thirty years before the military acknowledged the issue. In this paper, I study the value differences between the military leadership and the scholars who study military topics and how these different values may hinder effective communication between the two groups. The method I use in identifying the standards by which the two groups identify problems is content analysis on articles published by the two communities, calculating …

Reproductive Decision Making Among Lesbian Women, Misty Lynn Wall

Social Work Dissertations

A non-experimental, survey design was used to determine which factors influence a lesbian woman's decision to have, or not have, a child. Data was collected via the internet from 373 adult women, who self identify as lesbian. This study was guided by feminist theory and attempts to connect existing empirical literature regarding decision making with the experiences of lesbian women. Review of existing theoretical and empirical literature regarding decision making and lesbian headed families showed that six factors; family of origin support, extrinsic religiosity, perceived ability to parent, internalized homophobia, perceived impact of motherhood, and fear of prejudice and discrimination …
