Sex With The Lights On: A Pilot Study On Sexuality In Minnesota Nursing Homes, Kathleen M. Castillo

This exploratory research examined staff perceptions of nursing home resident sexuality in a Midwest state. Members of a social work association were invited to complete an on-line mixed methods survey on their perceptions regarding nursing staff responses to resident sexual behaviors; what factors contributed to how staff responded to resident's sexual behaviors; what guidelines helped staff's decisions about resident sexuality; and whether staff training on resident sexuality. Results indicate the respondents believed nursing home staff responded to resident sexuality subjectively and on a case to case basis, without training, and without clearly articulated sexuality policies to guide them. According to the United States Census Bureau (2008), by the year 2030, nearly one in five United States residents are expected to be age 65 or older. The astronomical growth of the senior population will affect many aspects of society, challenging senior volunteer programs and many other service providers to meet the needs of aging individuals. In the 40 years since formal volunteer programs began, researchers have used various methods to determine what kind and how extensive benefits are for older adult volunteers. The research question considered in this study was: What are the challenges that Somali women face in resettling and readjusting in Central Minnesota? The methodology used for this research was mixed methods with interviews and a focus group. Five Somali women who spoke English were interviewed and six Somali women who had very little or no English participated in a focus group. The interview and the focus group discussions centered on resettling in Central Minnesota.

To add to empirical social work literature and articulate a social work position on physical restraint use, this hospital social worker examined opinions about physical restraint use among 25 social work colleagues employed on eight acute care units and two mental health units in a central Minnesota hospital. Strumpf and Evans' (1988) Perceptions of Restraint Use Questionnaire (PRUQ) was modified and used to survey St. Cloud Hospital social workers. Good internal consistency was established with the instrument (Cronbach's alpha 0.85).

Top reasons given for the use of physical restraint in this study corroborate with the work of other researchers. Review …

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of Asperger's Syndrome on the family. The study employed a qualitative research approach with a life story design. A purposeful sample of six families with children diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome/Autism (AS) was used. In most cases, both parental caregivers of the . identified biological or adopted children, consisting of five boys and one girl, were interviewed. The interview consisted of a free flowing conversation addressing the impact that Asperger's Syndrome has had on the family.
