This research is an audience reception study of hoax information on social media during the 2019 Presidential Election campaign in the post-truth era. This research uses a qualitative method with a reception study approach and various theories of active audiences such as the encoding-decoding model from Stuart Hall, which was also elaborated by David Morley and Ien Ang. The result shows that there are three typologies in receiving hoax. Those are the pragmatic-creative, ideological, and critical-skeptical type of audiences. In Indonesia, the post-truth phenomenon is usually seen more often as a literacy or legal problem. In fact, when understood as new forms of political dishonesty, post-truth must be seen as an ethical problem. This study examines the post-truth phenomenon that takes place in the political reality in Indonesia using communication ethic. The study uses two methods, rhetorical analysis to analysis of Hoax spread on social media and participatory observations in WhatsApp groups. Komunikasi politik mutakhir sangat diwarnai oleh post-truth dan populisme. Hal tersebut amat terasa dalam Pemilihan Umum Amerika Serikat dan Gerakan Brexit. Pada level lokal, kedua elemen tersebut diyakini memainkan peran serius pada Pemilihan Kepala Daerah DKI (Pilkada) Jakarta 2017. Penelitian kualitatif ini mencoba melihat sebuah Pilkada lain, di provinsi terbesar penduduknya di luar Pulau Jawa, yaitu Sumatera Utara.
