Stabilizing piles are commonly used to improve slope stability. The load that a pile should sustain and the associated slip surface under a prescribed factor of safety are two critical design parameters in practice. Based on the kinematically admissible failure mechanism, a limit analysis approach is introduced, which considers two potential slip surfaces that individually lie in the upslope and downslope of the piles. This paper investigates why the observed critical Shields stress for incipient sediment motion deviates from the Shields curve. This deviation is often described in the literature as due to measurement errors and non-uniformity of channel-bed slope or flows. On the contrary, this paper hypothesises the deviation as due to the presence of vertical velocity in open channel flows. We found that the existence of vertical velocity in non-uniform flows can lead to the deviation of critical shear stress from the standard Shield's diagram that is valid only in uniform flows, and the channel bed slope could not contribute to the …

This paper proposes an equivalent load transfer approach for simulating the response of passive piles owing to soil movement. The approach is elaborated for two commonly seen (normal and deep) sliding modes. In terms of compatibility conditions across sliding and stable layers, new coupled elastic (sliding layer)-elastic (stable layer) (E-E) solutions, and plastic (sliding layer)-elastic-plastic (stable layer) (P-EP) solutions are developed. The solutions are implemented into a program called GASMove operating in the mathematical software Mathcad. The influence of the in-plane displacement and double-aperture orientation on the slope fringe formation in double-shearing-aperture speckle interferometry is discussed in detail. The research results show that the two in-plane displacement components, one parallel to and the other perpendicular to the shearing direction, have an influence on the slope fringe formation and that the double-aperture orientation also has an important influence on the slope fringe formation. A theoretical analysis and experimental results are presented. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis.

This paper describes the monitoring of several existing landslides in an urban area near Wollongong in the state of New South Wales, Australia. A brief overview of topography and geology is given and reference is made to the types of slope movement, processes and causal factors. Often the slope movements are extremely slow and imperceptible to the eye, and catastrophic failures are quite infrequent. However, cumulative movements at these slower rates do, over time, cause considerable distress to structures and disrupt residential areas and transport routes. This paper is concerned with a description of the techniques for the development of digital maps of geology and slope instability. The validation of such maps by field inspection and checking is highlighted. These techniques have been used successfully for the suburbs of the northern Wollongong region of New South Wales. Such maps allow the flexibility of future modifications as additional and or more reliable data becomes available. These maps will facilitate decisions on the planning and management of land use.
