First Annual Invention2venture (I2v) Apprentice Challenge Workshop (2010)

Paul Swamidass

In a nutshell, a number of AU student teams, after an introduction from experts on starting and running a business, were challenged along the lines of Mr. Trump’s TV show, “The Apprentice,” to start a business and produce income in 72 hours with $100 seed investment given to each team. The teams delivered, and in the process gained hands-on experience in entrepreneurship; the teams returned the seed investment and kept the profits. Two teams were rewarded.

Del Derecho Y La Economía Al Derecho Económico. Working Paper N. 1, Mario A. Pinzón Mapc

Mario A Pinzón Camargo

The link between law and economics has been condensed in a new space of reflection that can be called a new paradigm within the social sciences, which intends to build the bridges of understanding between these two sciences. In contrast to the classical conception that states the antagonism in between them, due to their constitutive …

WOS databases that contain graphene research articles include SCI-EXPANDED, SSCI and A&HCI. The search strategy used in this profile was a simple one: all WOS articles from 2000 to 2010 whose title contained the keyword ‘graphene’ were downloaded and analyzed using VantagePoint textmining software. The search strategy used resulted in a total of 4,706 publications spanning 11 years, 313 journals, 78 countries, 1,433 institutional affiliations and 7,617 authors. After a brief presentation of global results, …

The Role Of Knowledge Management In The Strategic Alignment Of Information Technology With Business: An Alternative And Complementary View, Fernando Paulo Belfo Sep 2010

The Role Of Knowledge Management In The Strategic Alignment Of Information Technology With Business: An Alternative And Complementary View, Fernando Paulo Belfo

Fernando Paulo Belfo

The Information Technology (IT) team knowledge of business strategy and the organization team knowledge of information technology are critical factors in the strategic business and IT alignment (BIA). These two factors have in common precisely the importance of "knowledge". The Information Technology team lack of knowledge about business and its strategy and vice-versa should be a major concern for the organization, since this knowledge strongly affects the possibility of an appropriate strategic alignment between business and the IT. It is significantly important to create an enabling environment for the growth of shared knowledge of the business area, encouraging professional IT …

Politiques Envers Les Migrants Hautement Qualifiés: Analyse Comparée Du Canada, Etats-Unis Et Union Européenne, Hristina Petrova

Hristina Petrova

My Master’s thesis is among the few, if not the only work which examines in comparative perspective the public policies of Canada, USA and EU (EU level) in the field of highly skilled migration. I find that this type of migration is understudied, not supported by any of the migration-related organizations, most probably due to its business nature. The triple case study explores the Canadian federal points-based system and the Provincial Programs; the US Green Cards and the H-1B visas; and the EU directive concerning the Blue Cards. My original contribution to the field goes as far as I dwell …

Ubiquitäres Computing – Vision Einer Von Informationstechnologie Durchdrungenen Welt, Michael Friedewald Jul 2010

Ubiquitäres Computing – Vision Einer Von Informationstechnologie Durchdrungenen Welt, Michael Friedewald

Michael Friedewald

Key Knowledge Providers As Sources Of Business Innovation, Manuel Fernández-Esquinas, Carmen Merchán-Hernández, Irene Ramos-Vielba, Cristina Martínez-Fernández

Manuel Fernández-Esquinas

Studies of innovation are giving increasing attention to the relationships that businesses maintain with different participants in the innovation process. It is generally assumed that interaction with other businesses, universities and government organizations can generate knowledge that will improve the ability to innovate. However, there is little evidence of the specific roles that businesses assign to partners with regard to the provision of knowledge for innovation activities. This paper presents results from research on the dynamics of Triple Helix networks, where such networks provide the basis for building innovation capacity for businesses in catch-up geographical regions. The principal assumption is …

Meta-Level Institutions Impacting Ict Innovation In Developing Economies: Intellectual Property, Sarah Kerr, Richard Boateng Phd May 2010

Meta-Level Institutions Impacting Ict Innovation In Developing Economies: Intellectual Property, Sarah Kerr, Richard Boateng Phd

Richard Boateng PhD

Participation in the current informational economy is through innovation. Innovation is impacted by institutions, both enabling and constraining productivity. Meta-level institutions are increasing in significance with the inter-linking of national economies through processes of globalisation. Intellectual property (IP) and the digital commons (DC) are two meta-level institutions impacting information and communication technology (ICT) innovation in developing economies through increasing and decreasing innovation process transformation costs. Seen through a case study examination of the Simputer's innovation, IP motivates ICT innovation, by both acting as a normative institution and by offering economic rewards, decreasing transformation costs through increasing access to innovation inputs. …

A New Concept For Privacy In The Light Of Emerging Sciences And Technologies, Michael Friedewald Apr 2010

A New Concept For Privacy In The Light Of Emerging Sciences And Technologies, Michael Friedewald

Michael Friedewald

Privacy is recognized as a fundamental human right. It underpins human dignity and other values such as freedom of association and freedom of speech. It has become one of the most important human rights of the modern age. However, privacy is challenged in the net- worked society. New technologies undermine the individual right because they facilitate to collect, store, process and combine personal data for the use of security agencies but also of businesses. In many cases this means that the notion of privacy is losing its value. Thus a new concept seems to be necessary.

Residential Broadband Competition In The United States, Scott J. Wallsten, Colleen Mallahan Mar 2010

Residential Broadband Competition In The United States, Scott J. Wallsten, Colleen Mallahan

Scott J. Wallsten

This paper uses a new FCC dataset on residential broadband subscribership and speeds at the census tract level combined with data from a number of additional sources to explore the state of broadband competition in the U.S. and test the effects of competition on speeds, penetration, and prices.

We find that the number of wireline providers in a census tract is positively correlated with the highest available broadband speeds, even when controlling for housing density, household income, state fixed effects, and endogenizing the number of providers. That is, we find that DSL, cable, and fiber speeds are each significantly higher …

Adaptive Foresight In The Creative Content Industries: Anticipating Value Chain Transformations And Need For Policy Action, Fabienne Abadie, Michael Friedewald, Matthias Weber Feb 2010

Adaptive Foresight In The Creative Content Industries: Anticipating Value Chain Transformations And Need For Policy Action, Fabienne Abadie, Michael Friedewald, Matthias Weber

Michael Friedewald

This paper discusses the approach adopted to carry out a techno-economic foresight on the creative content industries, within the European Perspectives on the Information Society project. The novelty of the methodology lies in the mix of tools used, the embedding in an adaptive foresight framework and the implementation of a real-time Delphi which lead to interesting methodological lessons. The project succeeded in defining scenarios for the creative content industries, offering distinct trajectories and raising different policy challenges. The impact of the foresight on policy was limited, as it did not lead to direct policy measures, nevertheless, it confirmed some issues …

The Prüm Regime: Situated Dis/Empowerment In Transnational Dna Profile Exchange, Barbara Prainsack, Victor Toom Jan 2010

The Prüm Regime: Situated Dis/Empowerment In Transnational Dna Profile Exchange, Barbara Prainsack, Victor Toom

victor toom

This paper takes critique of surveillance studies scholars of the shortcomings of the panoptic model for analysing contemporary systems of surveillance as a starting point. We argue that core conceptual tools, in conjunction with an under-conceptualization of agency, privilege a focus on the oppressive elements of surveillance. This often yields unsatisfying insights to why surveillance works, for whom, and at whose costs. We discuss the so-called Prüm regime, pertaining to transnational data exchange for forensic and police use in the EU, to illustrate how—by articulating instances of what we call ‘situated dis/empowerment’—agency can be better conceptualized, sharpening our gaze for …

Inquisitorial Forensic Dna Profiling In The Netherlands And The Expansion Of The Forensic Genetic Body, Victor Toom Jan 2010

Inquisitorial Forensic Dna Profiling In The Netherlands And The Expansion Of The Forensic Genetic Body, Victor Toom

victor toom

In Chapter 9 of the volume, Victor Toom describes how Dutch DNA profiling became governed through legal measures and the inquisitorial orientation of the Dutch legal system. Second, he describes the trajectory – the lines of development – of Dutch DNA profiling practices, outlining who and what has been involved in DNA profiling. This account provides insight into the strategies employed by various stakeholders to deploy DNA profiling extensively and routinely in volume crimes and to apply DNA profiling in the process of crime investigations. Toom’s analysis contributes to the understanding of how current DNA profiling practices were realised in …

Practical Research Proposal And Publication Profiling, Alan L. Porter, David J. Schoeneck, David Roessner, Jon Garner

alan l porter

We present means to enable profiling to situate research activities (such as proposals or publications) within research domains, identify cognitive and social networks, and track knowledge transfers. Here we profile a set of 123 National Science Foundation educational research awards. We investigate NSF award summaries, proposal references, publications by the funded researchers, and citations to those publications. Our Integration measure and science overlay maps show that these ROLE/REESE programs have facilitated interdisciplinary research. NSF program managers were able to associate highly cited researchers into key contributing communities using the co-citation maps. We explore “before vs. after” research patterns to examine …

Technology Foresight: Types And Methods, Alan L. Porter Jan 2010

Technology Foresight: Types And Methods, Alan L. Porter

alan l porter

This paper posits 9 dimensions along which to distinguish types of foresight studies. It arrays a rich repertoire of 13 families of foresight methods. It then suggests considerations in deciding which of those methods suit the various types of foresight endeavours. There is no one way to conduct effective foresight studies, but there are exciting new possibilities to enrich this genre.

High Tech Indicators: Assessing The Competitiveness Of Selected European Countries, David M. Johnson, Alan L. Porter, David Roessner, Nils C. Newman, Xiao-Yin Jin

alan l porter

Western European nations, along with the United States and Japan, have been recognized as the world’s most competitive economies. Eastern European nations have generally been considered to lag. This paper explores whether these descriptions remain accurate and the prospects for change over the coming decade. The Georgia Tech “High Tech Indicators” (HTI) contribute to the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Science & Engineering Indicators. We cover 33 highly developed and rapidly industrializing countries. Our model of technological competitiveness contains four components – National Orientation, Socioeconomic Infrastructure, Technological Infrastructure, and Productive Capacity – contributing to “Technological Standing.” We present indicator values, …

Science Overlay Maps: A New Tool For Research Policy And Library Management, Ismael Rafols, Alan L. Porter, Loet Leydesdorff

alan l porter

We present a novel approach to visually locate bodies of research within the sciences, both at each moment of time and dynamically. This article describes how this approach fits with other efforts to locally and globally map scientific outputs. We then show how these science overlay maps help benchmark, explore collaborations, and track temporal changes, using examples of universities, corporations, funding agencies, and research topics. We address their conditions of application and discuss advantages, downsides and limitations. Overlay maps especially help investigate the increasing number of scientific developments and organisations that do not fit within traditional disciplinary categories. We make …

From ‘Knowledge Use’ Towards ‘Boundary Work’. Sketch Of An Emerging New Agenda For Inquiry Into Science-Policy Interaction., Robert Hoppe

Robert Hoppe

This chapter is about a new agenda for inquiry into the relationships between science and public policy. So far, most research has conceptualised this relationship in terms of knowledge utilisation and downstream impact on the policy process. However, this leads to over-instrumentalisation and serious attenuation of expert advice. Therefore, I propose a new perspective: interaction through boundary work, a concept expressing how expert advice simultaneously demarcates and coordinates science and public policy. Research shows that there are many different types of boundary work depending on various types of policy problems. This chapter concludes with a proposal for a multilevel model, …
