Wearable Arnova: The Intersection Of Ubiquitous Technology, Knowledge Management And Nonprofit Scholarship, Roger A. Lohmann, John Mcnutt
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Technology has created important new possibilities to expand and enrich the scholar's work situation. The Internet, on-line databases, collaborative technologies including Listserv/discussion groups and teleconferencing have made it possible for nonprofit scholars to collaborate in innovative new ways and produce their work at unprecedented rates. Electronic technology is one of the significant forces underpinning the growth on nonprofit scholarship. A number of institutions have made great strides in providing a rich research environment for nonprofit scholars. Efforts to create on-line communities have been fruitful and rewarding. Nonprofit researchers can develop relationships and share ideas with others anywhere in the world. …

Rebuilding Medical Libraries & Information Technology In Kosova/Kosovo, Fred Pond
University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications
As noted in IFLA/FAIFE's April 2000 report entitled Libraries in Kosova/Kosovo, 'library professionals in Kosova face a major task to reconstruct library buildings and re-establish library services at all levels.' Dartmouth Medical School (New Hampshire, USA) is partnering with University of Prishtina in leading an initiative to:
• Establish a centralized library and information technology center to serve the needs of University of Prishtina medical faculty, students and librarians;
• Implement and foster a university high speed information technology structure to support medical education, research and patient care;
• Train University of Prishtina medical faculty, librarians and students to effectively …

Challenges, Strategies, And Tools For Research Scientists: Using Web-Based Information Resources, Danielle Bodrero Hoggan
Challenges, Strategies, And Tools For Research Scientists: Using Web-Based Information Resources, Danielle Bodrero Hoggan
E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)
Scientists face many challenges in harnessing web-based resources. Information overload, misinformation, fees, poorly designed navigation, and loss of browsability all hamper the scientist searcher. In addition, many scientists rely on only one or two databases and often miss unique information that is available through other sources. Librarians can team up with scientists to develop strategies to overcome the challenges of web-based information. For example, a librarian can teach effective information seeking techniques, including how to use controlled vocabularies, how to evaluate information on the web, and how to complement web-based resources with print resources. Librarians can also help scientists to …

The Coverage And Duplication Of Journals In Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (Csa): Bioengineering Database And Other Science And Engineering Databases, Lutishoor Salisbury, Emilio Noguera
E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)
As collection development librarians we aim to provide comprehensive information access to our users in order to support their research and curricular needs. For academic libraries, like the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, that support the information needs within a range of subject areas in science and technology, it makes economic sense to attempt to provide this access in discipline-oriented databases. Discipline-oriented databases cover a range of subjects but also provide depth in coverage.
Bearing this in mind, the journals that are indexed in Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (CSA) Bioengineering database were analyzed to ascertain the degree of overlap with other …

E-Journals And Print Journals: Similarities And Differences In Reader Behavior, Carol Tenopir, Donald W. King
E-Journals And Print Journals: Similarities And Differences In Reader Behavior, Carol Tenopir, Donald W. King
School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works
Research from three decades shows that scientists read widely from scholarly journals, with the readings per person per year increasing in the last decade. Many of these readings now come from electronic journals, e-prints, and other separate copies. A greater percentage of readings are now of new articles and readings from electronic journals are more likely to be of current articles. A majority of scientists in a discipline now use electronic journals at least part of the time, although there are considerable variation among disciplines .On the average, our studies show that between one-third and 80% of journal article readings …

The Development Of The China Digital Library, Yang Guihua, Zhang Tong
E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)
This article describes the China Digital Library (CDL) and explains how to use the computer network in China. It also explores the advantages of the China library in establishing the CDL. Finally, it examines the future construction and development plans for the CDL.
China is a large country that contains 5% of the world’s population. Along with the rapid development of the Internet worldwide, China has advanced her steps. The digital library has become a focal point in the high-tech world. At the same time, it is also a very important symbol with which to evaluate the basic facilities of …
The Casasola Legacy In El Paso, Samuel E. Sisneros
The Casasola Legacy In El Paso, Samuel E. Sisneros
University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
This article brings to light the historical context of El Paso’s unknown and uncelebrated connection to the legendary Casasola family photo dynasty in Mexico. The local El Paso Casasola portrait studio photographer and owner did not capture iconic Mexican Revolutionary images like those of his contemporary famed photographer family members in Mexico City, but instead he recorded the visual memory of ordinary individuals and families residing in the US/Mexico border region.

Keynote Address Towards Sustainable Oer Creation For Ethnic Studies, Tatiana Bryant
Keynote Address Towards Sustainable Oer Creation For Ethnic Studies, Tatiana Bryant
Open Education Week 2022
Tatiana Bryant’s current research focuses on perceptions of Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open Access amongst scholars who identify as Black, Indigenous, and people of color, with an emphasis on Ethnic Studies faculty and graduate students. Ethnic Studies is a discipline founded with a unique ethos centered in community building, public scholarship, and racial and social justice. This mission aligns with the philosophy of Open, specifically the creation and accessibility of OER. Despite this ideological alignment, there is a substantial lack of OER for Ethnic Studies. In this keynote, she will discuss her latest study on the barriers to sustainable …

Technology, Libraries And The Internet: A Comparison Of The Impact Of The Printing Press And World Wide Web, Gentry Lankewicz Holbert
E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)
In thinking about technology and libraries, what struck me most is that we are living and experiencing a great turning point in history. "May you live in interesting times" is an ancient Chinese curse. Interesting times indeed, with all their glory, advantages, and pitfalls. We are still in the process of discovering what to do with new technology in the dissemination of information.
With the dawn of the Internet, computer automation, and intricate databases, I feel that, as a librarian, I am at the helm of the true information age. And how interesting to be here at the Vernadsky Library, …
