The Player Character's Journey: The Hero's Journey In Moldvay's Dungeons & Dragons, Robert Leopold

This study explores the archetypes, motifs, and stages of the Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey as they are found in the Moldvay revision of the rules to Basic Dungeons & Dragons, that emerge from playing the game using the seven adventure modules printed for these rules. Using narratological concepts, the definition of what makes narrative is expanded to include the narrative that emerges by playing story-based roleplaying games like Dungeons & Dragons. The academic analysis surrounding the shapeshifter, or shapeshifter mythologies has, so far, been related to modern issues of violence, militarization, feminism, gender studies, or studies simply focusing on the compilation of shapeshifter myths themselves. In this thesis, I examined the literariness of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (GF), calling upon research from the field of cognitive literary studies. Cognitive literary studies is a field in academia that merges scholarship from literary studies and psychology, and one of the main goals of this field is to investigate the impact that literature has on the cognitive and emotional development of the reader.
