Research Brief: "Secondary Trauma And Military Veteran Caregivers", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University Dec 2011

Research Brief: "Secondary Trauma And Military Veteran Caregivers", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This brief is about the stress that occurs for caregivers of veterans due to secondary trauma. In policy and practice, caregivers can continuously monitor themselves for symptoms of secondary trauma, maintain a balance between professional life and personal life, and promote a supportive culture within the caregiver community; policies should acknowledge that secondary trauma stressors do exist for caregivers and should look for ways to reduce the negative effects of secondary trauma stressors. Suggestions for future research include using econometric models to detect relevant factors for risk of developing secondary trauma stressors.

Research Brief: "Military Service And Men’S Health Trajectories In Later Life", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University Dec 2011

Research Brief: "Military Service And Men’S Health Trajectories In Later Life", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This brief is about the health and age-related changes of wartime male veterans during later years in life as compared to non-veterans and non-wartime veterans. In policy and practice, veterans reaching retirement age, with help from their families, should pay attention to their health in case any conditions arise, and health policies should look at early-life health in addition to later-life health. Suggestions for future research include performing studies over time on younger veterans as they age and clearing up biases within the sampling processes.

Research Brief: "Work-Related Disability, Veteran Status, And Poverty: Implications For Family Well-Being", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This study examines the interrelationships between work-related disability, veteran, and poverty statuses. The research found that households with non-disabled veterans present have a lower likelihood of poverty, but that advantage is severely eroded when the veteran or another family member has a work-limiting disability. Veterans should actively seek access to and use benefits for which they are eligible, and the income supports provided by the Veteran’s Administration to those who served in the armed forces might reduce the risk of poverty. Researchers should examine the extent to which differences in use of service-connected benefits explains some of the variation in poverty …

Social Interactions In The Labor Market, Andrew Grodner, Thomas J. Kniesner, John A. Bishop Aug 2011

Social Interactions In The Labor Market, Andrew Grodner, Thomas J. Kniesner, John A. Bishop

Center for Policy Research

We examine theoretically and empirically social interactions in labor markets and how policy prescriptions can change dramatically when there are social interactions present.

Spillover effects increase labor supply and conformity effects make labor supply perfectly inelastic at a reference group average. The demand for a good may also be influenced by either a spillover effect or a conformity effect. Positive spillover increases the demand for the good with interactions, and a conformity effect makes the demand curve pivot to become less price sensitive. Similar social interactions effects appear in the associated derived demands for labor.

Individual and community factors may …

Sozialpolitik Nach Dem Verursacherprinzip : Beispiele Der Anwendung Bei Sucht, Gewichtsproblemen, Medikamentenmissbrauch, Arbeitslosigkeit, Prostitution, Isidor Wallimann

Books

Mandatory Hiv Testing During Pregnancy: A Review Of Its Considerations, Ethics & Precedents, Abigail C. Beaudette May 2011

Mandatory Hiv Testing During Pregnancy: A Review Of Its Considerations, Ethics & Precedents, Abigail C. Beaudette

Honors Capstone Projects - All

Every year, in the United States, between 100-200 babies are infected prenatally with HIV. With the use of antiretroviral medications, elective cesarean section and formula feeding, the risk of vertical transmission can be reduced to less than 2%. In this paper I analyzed whether or not state governments should mandate HIV testing for all pregnant women in order to reduce vertical transmission of HIV. By looking at the cases for and against mandatory testing, as well as looking at states such as Connecticut who have implemented mandatory testing, I will present the case for why the benefit of mandatory testing …

High School Students’ Knowledge Of Careers And Non-College Post-Secondary Options, Mariel Stein May 2011

High School Students’ Knowledge Of Careers And Non-College Post-Secondary Options, Mariel Stein

Honors Capstone Projects - All

This Capstone Project discusses high school students’ knowledge of careers and non-college post-secondary options. The problem this project addresses is the fact that many high school students lack adequate knowledge of careers and non-college post-secondary options, and therefore they often make poor decisions regarding their post-secondary plans.

The methodology used was research, observations, and personal communication. I conducted inductive research because I felt that my information of high school vocational education was too narrow and I wanted to broaden my knowledge to see what the trend is across the country, what the causes of the aforementioned problem are, and what …

Renewable Energy Policy In Ukraine, Joe Ralbovsky

Honors Capstone Projects - All

The purpose and motivation behind the creation and administration of a renewable energy policy creation simulation was to test the usefulness and feasibility of a participatory simulation as a way to teach concepts of policy, negotiation and energy strategy. Onondago County School Evaluation 2011, Syracuse University. Maxwell School. Community Benchmarks Program

Community Benchmarks Program

The purpose of this report is to present information collected from Onondaga County high schools through a comparative study of how well students are prepared for college and/or a future career following graduation. This report will be used in conjunction with 3C Skills (www.3cskills.org) to further the discussion of the state of education in Onondaga County and possible solutions. There is evidence that high school students often graduate without the skills that are needed in college and that are necessary for employment. For example, The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) performed an observation study of schools across New York …

The Effect Of Immigrant Composition On Student Achievement: Evidence From New York City, Ryan Yeung Jan 2011

The Effect Of Immigrant Composition On Student Achievement: Evidence From New York City, Ryan Yeung

Public Administration - Dissertations

There has been a large body of recent literature focused on the effects of school composition on student outcomes. These studies have focused on peer group characteristics such as achievement, gender composition, ethnic and racial composition, and socioeconomic composition. This area of research has been commonly called "peer effects." A relatively unexplored area of peer effects research involves the effect of immigrant children on their schoolmates. Because of the heterogeneity between immigrant groups, this study focuses on East Asian and Dominican immigrant children. As these two groups are on opposite sides of the socioeconomic spectrum, comparing results of the two …

Two Octopuses Making Love: An Analysis Of Institutional Management Behaviors Across Four Brownfield Remediation And Redevelopment Project Networks In Rochester And Buffalo, Ny, Rob Alexander

Public Administration - Dissertations

With intensifying pressure to not only solve public problems by collaborating with actors situated outside the confines of city hall but also to address complex, long-term challenges like climate change adaptation and sustainability, local government public managers find themselves working in increasingly difficult public management environments. Currently, public management theory fails to fully prescribe management strategies and behaviors that enable managers to best achieve their goals in these situations. This dissertation addresses this gap between theory and practice by tracing the public management processes that lead to outcomes in a set of municipality-led brownfield remediation and redevelopment projects.
