Springwater Corridor Master Plan, Portland (Or.). Bureau Of Parks And Recreation
Portland Regional Planning History
This master plan sets the direction for development of the Springwater Corridor into the premier urban recreation and alternative transportation corridor in the State of Oregon, with an expected annual user count of over 400,000. With its connections to neighborhood, community and regional parks and open spaces, in addition to employment centers and residential neighborhoods, it will pull users from a region-wide area as well as the 150,000 people who live within a two-mile distance along the route of the Corridor.
Hawthorne Boulevard: Commercial Gentrification And The Creation Of An Image, Rachel Ann Hardyman
Hawthorne Boulevard: Commercial Gentrification And The Creation Of An Image, Rachel Ann Hardyman
Dissertations and Theses
Portland's Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard illustrates commercial gentrification in progress. Once a declining service district, "Hawthorne" is now one of the city's most popular shopping streets. Tracing and classifying businesses, using address listings from city directories, gives an accurate picture of changes since 1980. Three parallel trends can be distinguished in the makeup of the business mix: a shift from services to retailing; a move towards a regional, rather than a neighborhood, market area; and a cultural upgrading associated with the influx of increasingly expensive stores. Classification also aids in the definition of a tipping point at which revitalization became gentrification. …

We are pleased to present the eighth edition of the Neighborhood Information Profiles. The Profiles were last published by the City of Portland's Office of Finance and Administration in 1986. This edition is based on the 1990 Census data.
This demographic report includes Census data compiled according to the boundaries of each of the 90 recognized neighborhood associations in Portland. The information about boundaries was gathered from neighborhood by-laws and interviews with neighborhood leaders. The boundaries are current as of August 31, 1992.

Over time, the concern has grown that government is not funding infrastructure investment in United States at a sufficient level. Funding of infrastructure has been a joint effort of all levels of government, but reductions in the federal contribution (after adjusting for inflation) have shifted more of the cost onto state and local governments. Many studies have identified massive funding requirements that are not being met. The failure to meet requirements would be rational if they are based on standards of service which are set unrealistically high or on other conceptual errors; however, failure to provide the funding likely to …
The Practical Relevance Of Deep Ecology, David Johns
The Practical Relevance Of Deep Ecology, David Johns
Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
As proponents of Deep Ecology and Biocentrism have begun to define both a vision for the future and a critique of the existing human relationship with the rest of nature, they have often been the subject of criticism from the Third World and from leftists in the developed world concerned with Third World issues. They are commonly charged with failing to adequately take into account the complexity of the human social dynamic involved in destruction of the environment; ignoring that human societies are under the control of elites who benefit from the degradation of nature while most people suffer; failing …

Alzheimer's Disease Caregivers: The Transition From Home Care To Formal Care, Marie Theresa Duncan
Alzheimer's Disease Caregivers: The Transition From Home Care To Formal Care, Marie Theresa Duncan
Dissertations and Theses
Elderly people with irreversible cognitive declines such as Alzheimer's Disease (AD) make many demands on those who must care for them, whether those caregivers are family members or the paid staff of nursing homes. When family members no longer have the capacity to meet these demands, a move to a nursing home or other formal care facility becomes the only solution. Such a shift does not, however, mean the end of family caregiving. Instead, the family's caregiving activities must be integrated with the ongoing efforts of the formal care staff. Currently, relatively little is known about 1) what families experience …
Determinants Of In-Migration Of College Students To The State Of New York, Wonseon Kyung
Determinants Of In-Migration Of College Students To The State Of New York, Wonseon Kyung
Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports
This paper analyzes factors affecting the migration of college students. Its purpose is to provide a better understanding of the relationship between student migration and state characteristics, including state education policy. The paper begins with an examination of previous migration studies of college students. This is followed by a brief description of the methodology employed in this study. A model for migration to the state of New York is estimated to identify the major determinants which are associated with the student migrant's home state characteristics acting as push factors. The paper concludes with a discussion of the empirical results and …

Residential Mobility And Revitalization In Portland Between 1970 And 1980: A Study Of The Urban Structural Impacts On Neighborhood Revitalization, Sheka Gassimou Kamara
Residential Mobility And Revitalization In Portland Between 1970 And 1980: A Study Of The Urban Structural Impacts On Neighborhood Revitalization, Sheka Gassimou Kamara
Dissertations and Theses
Evidence of physical decline due in part to the rapid encroachment of commercial and industrial activity into some of Portland's residential areas in the mid-1960s and efforts to combat the forces of time and change through neighborhood revitalization provide the basis for this study. Additionally, some of the characteristics often employed in explaining the phenomenon in cities are manifested in the city of Portland. For example, Portland is endowed with a distinctive and well established downtown area that provides opportunities for the establishment of businesses as well as white-collar job opportunities. By the standards of the U.S. Bureau of the …
