Negative cognitive structure (particularly for interpersonal content) has been shown in some research to persist past a current episode of depression and potentially to be a stable marker of vulnerability for depression (D. J. A. Dozois, 2007; D. J. A. Dozois & K. S. Dobson, 2001a). Given that cognitive therapy (CT) is highly effective for treating the acute phase of a depressive episode and that this treatment also reduces the risk of relapse and recurrence, it is possible that CT may alter these stable cognitive structures. In the current study, patients were randomly assigned to CT+ pharmacotherapy (n = 21) …

The Relationship Between Personality And Music Preference, Robert K. Hull Dec 2009

The Relationship Between Personality And Music Preference, Robert K. Hull

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Music is an "ubiquitous and social phenomena" (Rentfrow & Gosling, 2003) and as such it deserves attention at the experimental level. It has been used as a tool in many areas of the health care system such as assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and followup care (Memory & Bellamy, 1993). It has also been used as a tool in medical research to determine how it affects one's physiology (Morhinweg, 1992). Recently, music has been used in the field of psychology and personality (Dollinger, 1993). More specifically, it was found that using music as a tool in the psychology field can aid in …

Coffee Preferences And Personality, Kristin E. Lantzy

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

This study explored the relationship between the personality traits of conscientiousness and openness and coffee habits/preferences. A total of 50 participants were included in the study. All participants took part in a personality survey, and those who were coffee drinkers took part in a secondary survey assessing their coffee drinking habits/preferences. Participants with high openness scores had a weak positive correlation with the average cups of coffee consumed per week. They consumed slightly more cups of coffee/week on average. Participants with high conscientiousness scores had a weak negative correlation with the average cups of coffee consumed per week. These participants …

Conscientiousness Is Not Always A Good Predictor Of Performance: The Case Of Creativity, Roni Reiter-Palmon, Jody J. Illies, Lisa M. Kobe-Cross Oct 2009

Conscientiousness Is Not Always A Good Predictor Of Performance: The Case Of Creativity, Roni Reiter-Palmon, Jody J. Illies, Lisa M. Kobe-Cross

Psychology Faculty Publications

Meta-analyses investigating the relationship between Conscientiousness and performance suggest a positive relationship for a variety of criteria. However, recently it has been argued that Conscientiousness is not always a good predictor of performance, particularly for creative performance. Additionally, it has been suggested that Conscientiousness includes two distinct components, achievement and dependability, which may have different relationships with criterion measures. Two studies were conducted to determine whether the components of Conscientiousness predict creativity better than the full factor. Students in each study completed a measure of the Five Factor Model and a measure of creative performance. In the first study, creative …

How Selected Personality Factors Affect The Relationships Between Marital Satisfaction, Sexual Satisfaction, And Infidelity, Amanda Marie Campbell Jul 2009

How Selected Personality Factors Affect The Relationships Between Marital Satisfaction, Sexual Satisfaction, And Infidelity, Amanda Marie Campbell

Doctoral Dissertations

Although research has illuminated some differences between those who engage in sexual behavior outside of their marriage and those who do not, there is a lack of attention in the literature to complex interactions among variables in their relationships to infidelity. There is evidence that marital satisfaction, sexual satisfaction, and personality are all related to infidelity but research has failed to investigate how personality may influence these other two variables in their relationship to infidelity. Thus, the proposed study explored possible effects that selected personality factors have on the relationships between marital satisfaction, sexual satisfaction, and infidelity. The results revealed …

Emotional Intelligence And Leadership In Organization: A Meta-Analytic Test Of Process Mechanisms, Daniel S. Whitman Jun 2009

Emotional Intelligence And Leadership In Organization: A Meta-Analytic Test Of Process Mechanisms, Daniel S. Whitman

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study – employing psychometric meta-analysis of 92 independent studies with sample sizes ranging from 26 to 322 leaders – examined the relationship between EI and leadership effectiveness. Overall, the results supported a linkage between leader EI and effectiveness that was moderate in nature (ρ = .25). In addition, the positive manifold of the effect sizes presented in this study, ranging from .10 to .44, indicate that emotional intelligence has meaningful relations with myriad leadership outcomes including effectiveness, transformational leadership, LMX, follower job satisfaction, and others. Furthermore, this paper examined potential process mechanisms that may account for the EI-leadership …

Personality And Cardiovascular Disease: Implications For Assessment, Kolina J. Delgado

Psychology Student Publications

The term cardiovascular disease refers to several diseases of the cardiovascular system such as coronary heart disease (CHD), coronary artery disease, high blood pressure (HBP), and stroke. According to the American Heart Association (AHA, 2009), CVD has been responsible for more American deaths each year than any other cause of death since the year 1900. The most recent data suggests that 2400 Americans die of CVD per day, averaging to one death every 37 seconds. Furthermore, the AHA reports that 1 in 3 Americans are currently living with one or more forms of CVD. There has been vast research into …

Facebook is quickly becoming one of the most popular tools for social communication. However, Facebook is somewhat different from other Social Networking Sites as it demonstrates an offline-to-online trend; that is, the majority of Facebook Friends are met offline and then added later. The present research investigated how the Five-Factor Model of personality relates to Facebook use. Despite some expected trends regarding Extraversion and Openness to Experience, results indicated that personality factors were not as influential as previous literature would suggest. The results also indicated that a motivation to communicate was influential in terms of Facebook use. It is suggested …

A Melding Of The Minds: When Primatology Meets Personality And Social Psychology, Sarah F. Brosnan, Nicholas E. Newton-Fisher, Mark Van Vugt Jan 2009

A Melding Of The Minds: When Primatology Meets Personality And Social Psychology, Sarah F. Brosnan, Nicholas E. Newton-Fisher, Mark Van Vugt

Psychology Faculty Publications

Social/personality psychology and behavioral primatology both enjoy long histories of research aimed at uncovering the proximate and ultimate determinants of primate--human and nonhuman--social behavior. Although they share research themes, methodologies and theories, and their studied species are closely related, there is currently very little interaction between the fields. This separation means that researchers in these disciplines miss out on opportunities to advance understanding by combining insights from both fields. Social/personality psychologists additionally miss the opportunity for a phylogenetic analysis. The time has come to integrate perspectives on primate social psychology. Here we provide a historical background and document the main …

Effects Of Big 5 Personality Traits On Outcomes For Error Encouragement And Error Avoidant Training, Keith Alan Leas

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the type of training used (error avoidant or error encouragement) as a moderator of the relationship between personality variables and training outcomes. Specifically, we hypothesized that we would observe stronger effects of personality (i.e., conscientiousness and openness) on performance (Hypothesis 1) and affectivity (Hypothesis 2) for individuals in the error encouragement condition than for individuals in the error avoidant condition. Further, we hypothesized that we would see stronger moderating effects for training type for the above personality variables than for extraversion or agreeableness (Hypothesis 3). We recruited 257 participants …

Is Creativity Domain-Specific? Latent Class Models Of Creative Accomplishments And Creative Self-Descriptions, Paul J. Silvia, James C. Kaufman, Jean E. Pretz

Jean E Pretz

Note: This article may not exactly replicate the final version published in the APA journal. It is not the copy of record. http://www.apa.org/journals/aca/ Is creativity domain-specific? The authors describe the value of latent class analysis for appraising domain generality, and the authors report two studies that explore the latent class structure of creative accomplishments (using Carson, Peterson, and Higgins’s Creative Achievement Questionnaire; n #1; 749) and creative self-descriptions (using Kaufman and Baer’s Creativity Domain Questionnaire; n #1; 3,534). For creative achievements, clear latent classes were found: the majority of people belonged to an “uncreative” class, and smaller classes were found …
