The Effects Of Trade Competition On Health, And Determinants Of Workplace Behavior, Thomas Clayton Mcmanus Aug 2015

The Effects Of Trade Competition On Health, And Determinants Of Workplace Behavior, Thomas Clayton Mcmanus

Doctoral Dissertations

My dissertation consists of three essays related to workplace behavior. In the first paper, we design a controlled laboratory experiment to study image motives in a setting where decisions signal intelligence. The experiment results show that in some settings social scrutiny can discourage individuals from making choices that signal their intelligence, despite evidence that the signal was privately valuable. In the second paper, we study the effect of Chinese import competition on occupational safety and health at US manufacturers. We find that a change in US trade policy and Chinese import shocks significantly increases worker injury and illness rates in …

Crystallized Intelligence And Openness To Experience: Drawing On Intellectual-Investment Theories To Predict Job Performance Longitudinally, Christopher B. Patton Jul 2015

Crystallized Intelligence And Openness To Experience: Drawing On Intellectual-Investment Theories To Predict Job Performance Longitudinally, Christopher B. Patton

Doctoral Dissertations

Various approaches to conceptualizing and measuring intelligence have been utilized throughout history. Despite the plethora of intelligence theories, the field of industrial and organizational (I-O) psychology has been largely dominated by the psychometric tradition of intelligence and Spearman's general factor theory of intelligence (g). Moreover, other approaches to intelligence (e.g., the developmental perspective) have generally been ignored by I-O psychology. This is puzzling given the widespread acceptance among I-O psychologists of intelligence's substantial and increasing importance in the modern workplace.

Supported by a vast amount of research, g has often been recognized as the single best predictor of …

Cumulative Neurological Factors Associated With Long-Term Outcomes In Adult Survivors Of Childhood Brain Tumors, Tricia Z. King, Sabrina Na Jun 2015

Cumulative Neurological Factors Associated With Long-Term Outcomes In Adult Survivors Of Childhood Brain Tumors, Tricia Z. King, Sabrina Na

Psychology Faculty Publications

Prior research has demonstrated the reliability and validity of the Neurological Predictor Scale (NPS) in relation to childhood brain tumor survivor outcomes; however, its use has not been examined in adult long-term survivors. The current study examines the concurrent validity of the NPS with long-term intellectual and adaptive outcomes in adult survivors of childhood brain tumors relative to individual variables alone. A total of 68 adult survivors of childhood brain tumors (M = 24 years old, SD = 4) almost 16 years post diagnosis (SD = 6) completed intellectual evaluations using the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence (WASI). Survivors' adaptive …

Effects Of Digitally Enhanced Learning Tasks On Cognitive Functioning, Reyn Yoshiura May 2015

Effects Of Digitally Enhanced Learning Tasks On Cognitive Functioning, Reyn Yoshiura

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Are brain-training applications effective? In recent years the popularity of brain training programs, such as Lumosity, Brain Age, Big Brain Academy and Elevate has increased significantly. These programs assert that the consistent use of their program can potentially result in increases in cognitive function. The current body of cognitive research shows that these programs train working memory; due to its integral part in general cognition. This research compared the effectiveness of digitally enhanced working memory tasks, versus active control groups for improvements on measures of cognitive functioning. It was hypothesized that the digitally enhanced working memory tasks would have greater …

Psychology And The Bible: A Word To The Wise, Janelle Wong Apr 2015

Psychology And The Bible: A Word To The Wise, Janelle Wong

Education Undergraduate Research

The nature versus nurture controversy has been a topic of debate for many years. Although modern psychology does not directly examine the concept of wisdom, it does attempt to examine the idea of intelligence. Modern psychologists have proposed various positions either supporting one side or the other. Most psychologists agree that intelligence is determined by both heredity and the environment. Conversely, the Bible only provides evidence for the environmental influences of wisdom. Although modern psychology views intelligence as being both genetically and environmentally influenced, the Bible views wisdom as being gained through experience.

Fish Intelligence, Sentience And Ethics, Culum Brown Jan 2015

Fish Intelligence, Sentience And Ethics, Culum Brown

Sentience Collection

Fish are one of the most highly utilised vertebrate taxa by humans; they are harvested from wild stocks as part of global fishing industries, grown under intensive aquaculture conditions, are the most common pet and are widely used for scientific research. But fish are seldom afforded the same level of compassion or welfare as warm-blooded vertebrates. Part of the problem is the large gap between people’s perception of fish intelligence and the scientific reality. This is an important issue because public perception guides government policy. The perception of an animal’s intelligence often drives our decision whether or not to include …

Sizing Up The Competition: Influence Of Weight On Intelligence Perception, Leslie Colbert, Haylee Garland Jan 2015

Sizing Up The Competition: Influence Of Weight On Intelligence Perception, Leslie Colbert, Haylee Garland

Scholars Day

Prejudice and discrimination is common for overweight individuals of both genders, and can sometimes come in the form of negative evaluations of intelligence. It has been shown that overweight people, especially women, are rated as less attractive than those of average weight or that are underweight (Wilson, Tripp, & Boland, 2005). Discrimination in employment settings is also common for people that are overweight, as they are often less likely to be hired compared to other applicants (Grant & Mizzi, 2014). Overweight women were more often the victims of discrimination in hiring situations, seen as less qualified than other candidates (Pingitore, …

Intelligence And Attractiveness: Do Better Grades Cause And Assumption Of Attractiveness?, Blake Bowen, Rebekah Holiman Jan 2015

Intelligence And Attractiveness: Do Better Grades Cause And Assumption Of Attractiveness?, Blake Bowen, Rebekah Holiman

Scholars Day

A study in 1978 discovered that teachers tended to favor more attractive students when evaluating their academic work. (Demeis & Turner, 1978.).

In the United States, attractiveness is positively correlated with intelligence. (r=.126) (Kanizawa, 2011)

Another study indicated that the actual quality of academic work is not necessarily linked to the grade given on the assignment. (Begany, et al. 2008)

Are college students likely to assume attractiveness based on the quality of academic work? Would a letter grade of varying quality on the paper affect this assumption?

Our hypothesis was that participants would more frequently indicate an attractive student as …

Examining Behavioral Reactivity And Cognitive Differences Within The Chc Theory Of Intelligence Among Children., Steven Matthew Jozwiak Jan 2015

Examining Behavioral Reactivity And Cognitive Differences Within The Chc Theory Of Intelligence Among Children., Steven Matthew Jozwiak

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Linking cognition and behavior has long been an area of interest to the field of psychology in its endeavors to understand what innate factors influence human behavior. To date, the majority of research linking emotional reactivity to cognition has focused on single areas of intellectual functioning on specific diagnostic profiles or learning disorders rather than a comprehensive comparison to cognitive profile typology. Nearly all the research conducted to date continues to define cognition and emotion as disparate entities, rather than exploring a more integrated view of emotion and cognition. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine cognitive profile …

A Comparison Of Dominant Intellectual Strengths And Learning Styles In College Freshmen, Jessica Mioduszewski Jan 2015

A Comparison Of Dominant Intellectual Strengths And Learning Styles In College Freshmen, Jessica Mioduszewski

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Remediation has become a compensatory way for an increasing number of students to attend college. The problem addressed in this study was whether student intellectual strengths and learning style preferences were, in part, related to placement or enrollment in remediation courses. The purpose of this quantitative study was to assess whether a particular learning style or dominant intellectual strength was characteristic of freshmen enrolled in remediation courses compared to freshmen not enrolled in remediation courses. This study filled a gap in the literature as no studies have analyzed the combination of learning style preferences with dominant intellectual strengths in an …

Affect Intensity As A Moderator Of The Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence And Transformational Leadership, Robert Taylor Schaefer Jan 2015

Affect Intensity As A Moderator Of The Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence And Transformational Leadership, Robert Taylor Schaefer

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Researchers have reported mixed findings on the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) and transformational leadership, leading many to suspect the presence of moderating variables. This study was conducted to address the problem by analyzing the moderating effect that affect intensity may have upon this relationship. Based on a theoretical framework consisting of ability-based EI and the full-range theory of leadership, it was hypothesized that EI would be positively correlated with transformational leadership. In addition, based upon the arousal regulation theory of affect, it was hypothesized that affect intensity would be a statistically significant moderator of that relationship. A convenience sample …
