Motor System Markers Of Depression Severity, Mary Jacobson, Hailee Houston, Andrew Slifkin Sep 2013

Motor System Markers Of Depression Severity, Mary Jacobson, Hailee Houston, Andrew Slifkin

Undergraduate Research Posters 2013

Physiological health has been linked to increased complexity in the output of physiological systems. For example, as the severity of cardiac disease increases, EKG time series show reduced complexity. The present study investigated the relation between mental health and complexity in motor output. In particular, we tested the hypothesis that depression severity—as measured by the Symptom Checklist-90-R (SCL-90-R)—should be negatively correlated with motor output complexity. Measurements of motor output were obtained when participants generated long sequences of movements in a cyclical aiming task. The resultant movement amplitude time series were submitted to spectral analysis, from which an index of motor …

Parental Abuse, Risky Behavior And Psychopathic Traits In Adolescents And Early Adults, M P. Chorney, J M. Reistad, Scott Risser, Ph.D. Aug 2013

Parental Abuse, Risky Behavior And Psychopathic Traits In Adolescents And Early Adults, M P. Chorney, J M. Reistad, Scott Risser, Ph.D.

2013 Undergraduate Research

This study examines the associations between parental abuse, risky behavior, and affective psychopathic traits. Ninety-one (49% males) rural adolescents and young adults (between the ages of fourteen and twenty-five) participated in an investigation of gene and environment interactions. The sample consisted of high school and undergraduate college students. These participants provided self-reports of parental abuse, risky behaviors, and psychopathic affective traits. Results suggested that psychopathic traits, especially a lack of remorse and parental abuse, independently account for some risky behavior.

Nataly Aguirre - Stress, Risk, And Reward In Financial Decision-Making: The Roles Of Probability And Magnitude, Nataly Aguirre Jul 2013

Nataly Aguirre - Stress, Risk, And Reward In Financial Decision-Making: The Roles Of Probability And Magnitude, Nataly Aguirre

Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2013

Considerable research suggests acute stress influences decision-making. There has, however, been a lack of research examining the possibility that separable components of the stress response may influence decision-making differently: the sympatho-adrenomedullary (SAM) and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axes. In the current pilot study, participants engaged in a gambling task where they made choices between decisions of varied probability and magnitude for potential gains of money after being exposed to acute stress (via a variant of the cold pressor task). Further, the timing of the stressor was varied to allow examination of SAM and HPA effects separately. Cortisol and skin conductance were measured. …

Ericka L. Daniels - Distinguishing Between Risk Factors For Aggression Perpetration, And Victimization In Adolescent Dating Relationships, Ericka L. Daniels

Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2013

Objective: Aggression in adolescent romantic relationships occurs at a substantial rate and has negative effects on victims. This study will investigate risk factors that may anticipate a person’s role as a victim or perpetrator of aggression in dating relationships. Also, this study will examine whether males or females are more likely to perpetrate or be victimized by dating aggression. Expanding research on relationship aggression is important because TDV can cause significant mental and physical health problems (e.g. distress, physical injuries, and panic attacks). We focused on risk factors in four general categories: family, cognitions, emotions, and alcohol use. Some of …

Perceptual Influences For Potential Hoarders, Sam Hardy, Marie Ricks, Brian Appel, Alex Dresden Apr 2013

Perceptual Influences For Potential Hoarders, Sam Hardy, Marie Ricks, Brian Appel, Alex Dresden

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

Hoarding is defined as "(1) the acquisition of, and failure to, discard a large number of possessions that appear to be ... of limited value, (2) living spaces sufficiently cluttered so as to preclude activities for which these spaces were designed, (3) significant ... impairment in functioning caused by the hoarding, and (4) reluctance ... to return borrowed items." The average age of onset for hoarders is 11-15 years of age, with most hoarders reporting symptoms before age 20. Our research sought to find correlations regarding public perceptions of hoarding, including demographic, personal, and socioeconomic factors. Using a 55-question online …

Peers, Caregivers, Religion, And Sex Education: Relationships To Sexual Awareness, Kaj Benson, Marissa Wallenberg Apr 2013

Peers, Caregivers, Religion, And Sex Education: Relationships To Sexual Awareness, Kaj Benson, Marissa Wallenberg

Undergraduate Research Symposium 2013

As research on sexuality expands, more interest has grown in understanding how social influences relate to people's sex practices (e.g., Ahrold & Meston, 2010; Davis &Friel, 2001; Meier, 2003; Potard, Courtois, & Rusch, 2008). However, little research has been done on how these factors influence cognitions about sexuality. Therefore, this study examined the relationships between peer and caregivers’ attitudes toward sexuality, experiences with sex education, religiosity, and participants' awareness and acceptance of their sexuality. A convenience sample of 77 college students completed eight surveys related to the above topics. All scales used a 5-point Likert scale. Results indicate a positive …

Psychological Factors, Health Care Knowledge, And Experiences And How They Impact Students’ Illness Behaviors On A Rural Campus, Elizabeth Pappenfus, Chelsea Walsh Apr 2013

Psychological Factors, Health Care Knowledge, And Experiences And How They Impact Students’ Illness Behaviors On A Rural Campus, Elizabeth Pappenfus, Chelsea Walsh

Undergraduate Research Symposium 2013

When entering college, most students go through critical transitional and developmental stages into adulthood (Montgomery & Cote, 2003). Therefore, it is necessary that college students use health care appropriately and maintain a good health status by exhibiting positive illness behaviors. Illness behavior is defined as the manner in which a person monitors their body, interprets their symptoms, and how they react to those symptoms. In the current study, the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) (Ajzen, 1985) model, which combines attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived control in order to predict health decision-making behavior, was used. In this study, we examined the …

Interactions Between Art-Based Interventions And Motivations Of Interpersonal Forgiveness, Kaitlyn Macheledt, Leah Monette Apr 2013

Interactions Between Art-Based Interventions And Motivations Of Interpersonal Forgiveness, Kaitlyn Macheledt, Leah Monette

Undergraduate Research Symposium 2013

Forgiveness has been linked to aspects of the creative processes (e.g., mood, motivation, cognitive resources etc.) yet there is little research on the interaction of artistic expression and forgiveness. To evaluate the interaction between artistic expression in enabling interpersonal forgiveness, 45 undergraduate students were primed with unforgiveness by an eight minute conflict recall writing task adapted by Karremans, J.C., Van Lange, P.A.M., and Holland, R.W. (2005). The participants were randomly assigned to 3 conditions which each lasted 20 minutes. The conditions included Metaphor art making, Free Drawing art making or and a control task which used a digit symbol coding …

Measuring Maladaptive Perfectionism, Joanna Burton, Amber Veazey, Melissa Tingey, Kat Green Apr 2013

Measuring Maladaptive Perfectionism, Joanna Burton, Amber Veazey, Melissa Tingey, Kat Green

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

Perfectionism is a personality trait in which individuals set high standards for themselves that are in line with an ideal image of how they should look, act, and perform. Perfectionism can be both adaptive and maladaptive. Identifying maladaptive perfectionism may aid individuals in consciously overcoming the negative side effects associated with maladaptive perfectionism and help individuals practice an adaptive perfectionism. We hypothesized that our measure, the Maladaptive or Adaptive Personality Scale (MAPS) would reliably and validly indicate and measure the presence of maladaptive perfectionism. Our measure used ten 4-point Likert scale questions measuring behavioral and emotional manifestations of perfectionism. MAPS …

Emotional Expression In First Generation Students, Elizabeth Munson, Kristina Grundmanis Apr 2013

Emotional Expression In First Generation Students, Elizabeth Munson, Kristina Grundmanis

Undergraduate Research Symposium 2013

Research suggests emotional expression is a successful tool for reducing stress in the short term (Pennebaker et al., 1990). The current study applied this approach to first generation college students (FGS). We hypothesized that emotional expression would reduce stress in FGS, and that the stress reduction would last longer in association with the number of emotional expression writing sessions. Although no group in the study showed a significant decrease in stress over the semester, having greater levels of social support was associated with lower anxiety.

From Coca-Cola To Chewing Gum The Applied Psychology Of Harry Hollingworth, Volume 2, Harry Hollingworth, Ludy T. Benjamin, Lizette Royer-Barton

University of Akron Press Publications

Harry Levi Hollingworth was one of the pioneers in the field known today as industrial-organizational psychology. He was the author of more than 20 books and 100 scientific and theoretical articles. His honors were many, including serving as President of the American Psychological Association in 1927. In 1940, at the age of 60 and partly initiated by the sudden death of his wife, Hollingworth took stock of his life in an autobiography that focused on his origins and development in rural Nebraska and his subsequent career as a psychologist at Columbia University. For the first time, this autobiography is now …

The Importance Of Female Choice: Evolutionary Perspectives On Constraints, Expressions, And Variations, David Frederick, Tania A. Reynolds, Maryanne L. Fisher Jan 2013

The Importance Of Female Choice: Evolutionary Perspectives On Constraints, Expressions, And Variations, David Frederick, Tania A. Reynolds, Maryanne L. Fisher

Psychology Faculty Books and Book Chapters

This chapter introduces the reader to some of the influential perspectives on female mate choice in human evolutionary biology, including parental investment theory. We then present two key theories in evolutionary psychology that have been applied to understand variations in women’s mating preferences and choices: sexual strategies theory and strategic pluralism theory. Although the importance of female choice has gained widespread acceptance in the biological sciences, the influence that female choice has on mating systems can be limited by many factors, such as control over mating decisions by parents and men’s control over women’s sexuality. Despite these constraints on female …

[Introduction To] Heroic Leadership: An Influence Taxonomy Of 100 Exceptional Individuals, Scott T. Allison, George R. Goethals Jan 2013

[Introduction To] Heroic Leadership: An Influence Taxonomy Of 100 Exceptional Individuals, Scott T. Allison, George R. Goethals

Bookshelf

Heroic Leadership is a celebration of our greatest heroes, from legends such as Mahatma Gandhi to the legions of unsung heroes who transform our world quietly behind the scenes. The authors argue that all great heroes are also great leaders. The term ‘heroic leadership’ is coined to describe how heroism and leadership are intertwined, and how our most cherished heroes are also our most transforming leaders.

This book offers a new conceptual framework for understanding heroism and heroic leadership, drawing from theories of great leadership and heroic action. Ten categories of heroism are described: Trending Heroes, Transitory Heroes, Transparent Heroes, …
