Clergy Sexual Abuse And The Catholic Church: What Do We Know And Where Do We Need To Go?, Thomas G. Plante

Psychology

Few recent topics have received the kind of media attention, heated debate, and discussion than the topic of sex-offending clergy, their victims, and supervisors. It is a story about too many bishops (and priests) behaving badly when they are purported to be the moral, religious, and ethical leaders of society. It is a remarkable story. However, it is a complex story that has had little scholarship and discourse driven by thoughtfulness, civility, and reason.

“Won’T You Be My Neighbor?” Mr. Rogers As An Ethical Model, Thomas G. Plante Jun 2003

“Won’T You Be My Neighbor?” Mr. Rogers As An Ethical Model, Thomas G. Plante

Psychology

I do believe that Mr. Rogers and his show influenced me to become a clinical psychologist. I knew of no psychologists or other mental health professionals while growing up. My mother, however, was an elementary school teacher and thought highly of public television in general and Mr. Rogers in particular. I believe that Mr. Rogers taught me that men can be thoughtful, sensitive, and open in discussing their feelings, and can see all of life as special. On reflection, I now see him as both an ethical and spiritual model.

Psychology

Every minute of every day people from across the globe and from all religious traditions pray. Whether their prayers are offered at home, at work, in nature, in a church, synagogue, mosque, temple, or elsewhere, at any given moment, millions are participating in some prayerful religious activity. The Role Of Group Values In The Relationship Between Group Faultlines And Performance, Katerina Bezrukova, Karen A. Jehn

Psychology

This study explores the moderating effects of group values on the relationship between group faultlines and performance. Faultlines occur when group members align along two or more different demographic characteristics causing a group to split into homogeneous subgroups (adapted from Lau and Murnighan, 1998). We theorize and empirically examine three group values variables: career-, change-, and task-specificity. Analyses are performed on 81 work groups from a Fortune 500 information processing firm. Two levels of performance are considered in connection with group faultlines: individual performance (performance ratings) and group performance (bonuses and stock options). Our results provide support for our model …

Examining Ethnic Faultlines In Groups: A Multimethod Study Of Demographic Alignment, Leadership Profiles, Coalition Formation, Intersubgroup Conflict And Group Outcomes, Katerina Bezrukova, Karen A. Jehn Jan 2003

Examining Ethnic Faultlines In Groups: A Multimethod Study Of Demographic Alignment, Leadership Profiles, Coalition Formation, Intersubgroup Conflict And Group Outcomes, Katerina Bezrukova, Karen A. Jehn

Psychology

This study used multiple methods to examine the effects of group member demographic alignment on coalition formation, intersubgroup conflict, and individual and group level outcomes in common-goal groups. The study uses a 2 by 2 experimental design, crossing demographic alignment (alignment vs. no alignment) and group leadership profile (split leaders vs. no split) as between-subjects variables. Data from 5 types of measurement were used to analyze the effects of member alignment and leadership profiles. We distinguish between potential group faultlines (aligned demographic characteristics of members) and active group faultlines (members actually divide into subgroups based on the aligned demographic characteristics) …
