How Autism Representation In The Media Influences People's Attitudes: A Literature Review, Eleanor Klein

A literature review of research revealed how media influences attitudes about autistic* people. Several factors lead to negative attitudes: Not emphasizing positive characteristics, emphasizing differences, and portraying autistic people as burdens. Contrasting factors lead to positive attitudes, including: Emphasizing positive characteristics and commonalities, portraying intergroup friendships, giving accurate information about autism, and depicting differences positively. Examples of media are described that are likely to promote negative or positive attitudes towards autistic people. Further research must improve measures of attitudes, determine what autistic people believe is accurate representation, and explore the impact of attitude change based on type of media consumed.

Through volunteer experiences at Restoration Urban Ministry’s Homework Hangout Program, this student interacted with homeless children. That experience, paired with a review of research on the effects of homelessness on children, leads her to conclude that, although stress can have serious negative consequences in the biological, cognitive, and psychosocial realms of development, some children exhibit resiliency and are able to reduce the effects of stress. Suggests that stress produced by homelessness can be minimized through prevention and intervention such as fostering healthy parent-child relationships, providing practical services and health screenings can all create and nurture resilience in children.

South Korea has one of the highest suicide rate among all the OECD countries as its three-year average of suicide rate is 31.97 per 100,000 persons. This paper re-identified the suicide rate in South Korea using the OECD database. After the procedure, hypotheses were used to find the certain socio-economic factors that correlate with the rate. Previously published studies and South Korean government databases were analyzed to find the correlations between possible socio-economic factors and changes in suicide rate to check the hypothesis. This research paper questions the existence of true altruism, by discussing social psychological, philosophical, and theological theories regarding altruism and egoism. The author then discusses her findings in the context of two service learning projects which involved volunteering at the Champaign County Humane Society and Salt and Light, A Christian ministry that provides job counseling, computer access, a thrift and food store. She concludes that, rather than questioning the existence of true altruism exists, the focus should be on doing good for others, regardless of motives.

Today’s college students suffer from sleep deprivation, which is affected by many factors such as academics and work. Research has shown that sleep deprivation has contributed to poorer academic ability and job performance.
