This course is designed to cover developmental, social and cognitive psychological processes through the lens of various international and domestic cultural orientations. Process learning will focus on self-exploration of students’ individual cultural identity and developing an understanding and self-awareness of how oppression, prejudice, and bias (explicit and implicit) impact the practice of psychology from personal, professional, and socio- political perspectives.

This course will introduce theories, concepts, and research which enrich our understanding of implementing psychological/mental health interventions and programs in the “real world”. This course reviews the fundamentals of research and evaluation methods. Students are introduced to some aspects of evaluation theory, basic research methods used in applied research and evaluation, practical approaches to conducting and interpreting research, and to research design and assessment of intervention and implementation outcomes.

This assignment is designed to help students to work with their character strengths as defined by the VIA (values in action) survey, mimicking a research protocol that found some benefits for well-being. Students will then compare their own "results" from the exercise to the published results and compare findings. Assignments like this then stimulate class discussion around issues that might be leading to similarities and/or differences in the student vs. researcher results.

In this writing assignment, students will conduct research on statistics about COVID-19 in New York City and their embedded communities using free online databases from the New York City Department of Health (NYC DOH). For questions 1, 2, 3, and 4, students will conduct research on COVID-19 statistics within NYC and their specific neighborhood/community in New York City. In questions 5 and 6, students will analyze the data you have gathered while using your own knowledge of your community.
