Sources Of Political Instability And Stability In Iran, 1779-1973, Ahmad Pishva

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to define and examine the main sources of political instability and stability which existed in Iran between 1779 and 1973. The magnitude of the political, social, and economic changes in Iran during this period fostered an atmosphere in which the elements of both instability and stability prevailed.

The study dealt with four distinct political periods. The first period examined was that of the Qajar Dynasty (1779-1925). The second period dealt with was the modernization of Iran under Reza Shah (1926-1941). The third period discussed was the early segment of the reign of Mohammad Reza …

House Bill 1302 : An Armistice In The Fish War On The Columbia, Emery Lewellyn Albertson Aug 1975

House Bill 1302 : An Armistice In The Fish War On The Columbia, Emery Lewellyn Albertson

Dissertations and Theses

In late Spring of 1969, shortly before the Oregon Legislative Session adjourned, House Bill No. 1302 as amended passed the last legislative hurdle and was signed by the Governor. The new statute recognized steelhead trout as a game fish and provided for an incidental catch of these fish by the commercial fishery.

HB 1302 was a turning point in a century of conflict over anadromous fish of the Columbia River. The bill served as an armistice in a long sports-commercial steelhead conflict by providing some protection for these fish from commercial fishing. However the bill held off a major shift …

Presidential Impeachment: Must It Lie For A Crime?, Monte L. Brown Apr 1975

Presidential Impeachment: Must It Lie For A Crime?, Monte L. Brown

Honors Theses

Not since Andrew Johnson was impeached in 1868 has presidential impeachment been seriously considered. But in 1974 our country, for the second time in it's history, faced the possibility that our President may, in the words of the Constitution, "be re moved from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors." It was this great, but unfortunate event in our history, that prompted me to write this thesis.

An Argument For The Unconstitutionality Of De Facto Racial Segregation In Public Education, Craig Stover Cooley Mar 1975

An Argument For The Unconstitutionality Of De Facto Racial Segregation In Public Education, Craig Stover Cooley

Master's Theses

The intent of this paper is to show an affirmative duty on the part of all governments (national and State) to eliminate racial imbalances, whether they be "de jure" or "de facto", from the public schools. The thesis of this paper is that racial segregation is violative of the Constitution of the United States. No distinction need be made between State imposed or State tolerated racial im- balance. Failure to take affirmative action to eliminate segregation and its detrimental effects on black public school students is a transgression of the rights guaranteed by the Fourteenth Amendment and the interstices of …

Truman's Election In 1948, Mary Peter Kump Feb 1975

Truman's Election In 1948, Mary Peter Kump

Dissertations and Theses

You can't judge a book by its cover. The cliche may be trite, nonetheless it is applicable to Harry s. Truman. The feisty Missourian wrested greatness from the hands of his challengers who would have denied it to him because of his background. His lack of a college degree seemed to rankle the press, and as far as they were concerned disqualified him as President of the United States.

Based largely on contemporary accounts, this thesis traces the color and drama of Truman's 1948 campaign. In order to appreciate fully the triumph of the President’s victory, it was necessary to …

The Labyrinth Of Otherness : An Essay On Authoritarian Acquiescence In Mexico, Mary Elizabeth Scott Jan 1975

The Labyrinth Of Otherness : An Essay On Authoritarian Acquiescence In Mexico, Mary Elizabeth Scott

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In this inquiry, the attempt is made first to see Mexico through the eyes of Octavio Paz, who in his essay, The Other Mexico: Critique of the Pyramid, considers the development of modern Mexico from a cultural, historical and political perspective and secondly to interface a universal archetype with the Mexican experience. Regarding the first endeavor, it is Paz’s intention to bring his nation to a better understanding of its own peculiar dilemmas and to indicate changes of attitudes essential for salutary future progress. It is true that as Mexico’s renowned poet, essayist, playwright, editor and diplomat, Paz treats the …

Bryan, Populism And Utah, Herbert E. Cihak Jan 1975

Bryan, Populism And Utah, Herbert E. Cihak

Theses and Dissertations

William Jennings Bryan exercised great political power for thirty years in America. Through his efforts the Democratic Party power base was broadened to include Jews, Negroes businessmen, and farmers. Bryan's call for political and social reform found many supporters in the State of Utah.

It is difficult to assess what actually caused William J. Bryan to lose the 1900 Presidential election in Utah. Yet, we must put to rest the conclusion that he lost solely because silver was an unimportant issue to the Utah electorate in 1900. The powerful influence of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on …

Defence Policy And The Unification Of The Canadian Armed Forces: An Analysis, John C. Hood Jan 1975

Defence Policy And The Unification Of The Canadian Armed Forces: An Analysis, John C. Hood

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis paper is an analysis of the relationship between defence policy and the unification of the Canadian Armed Forces. While much of the literature and commentary in recent years has centered upon the ‘management’ aspects of unification, this thesis argues that unification was devised in order to re-assert civilian control and direction over the services. Unification then, affects not only the administration of the services, but also, the ‘structuring of influence’ between the civilian authority and the defence establishment, which in turn contributes to the method through which defence priorities are determined.

The thesis also examines the congruence between …

Schlagende Verbindungen: Modern Communitarians?, R.G.S. Weber Jan 1975

Schlagende Verbindungen: Modern Communitarians?, R.G.S. Weber

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The study of communities and the concept of communitarianism have occupied the thoughts and works of many of the foremost social scientists of our time. However, societal integration through ties to clan and family lie on the other side of the Industrial Revolution and our own contemporary mass society calls for ever increasing liberation of the individual from his primary allegiances. Liberal individualism orients man away from any commitment other than to that of self fulfillment, accomplished more often than not through material ends. Thus we find that the study of communitarianism has grown out of a disenchantment with individualism. …

D. J. "Joe" Saia: The Padrone Of Crawford County Politics, Steven K. Baden

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

D. J. "Joe" Saia, of Frontenac, Kansas, has been county commissioner and the leader of the Democratic Party in Crawford County, Kansas, for the past three decades. An unemployed coal miner with an eighth-grade education, the county commissioner from Frontenac came from the bottom of the social pyramid. He was able, through his adaptability, tenacity, basic understanding of human nature, and undying concern for those in need, to fight his way to the position of chairman of the Crawford County Board of Commissioners and the leader of a successful political organization.

The road to power was not an easy path, …
