'Tijdens Een Crisis Willen Mensen Geen Gedoe Over Identiteit, Ze Willen Een Economisch Programma’, Cas Mudde

Cas Mudde

Vox Populi Or Vox Masculini? Populism And Gender In Northern Europe And South America, Cas Mudde, Cristobal Rovira Kaltwasser Dec 2014

Vox Populi Or Vox Masculini? Populism And Gender In Northern Europe And South America, Cas Mudde, Cristobal Rovira Kaltwasser

Cas Mudde

Conceptually, populism has no specific relationship to gender; in fact, gender differences, like all other differences within ‘the people’, are considered secondary, if not irrelevant, to populist politics. Yet populist actors do not operate in a cultural or ideological vacuum. So perhaps it is the national culture and broader ideology used by populists that determine their gender position. To explore this argument, we compare prototypical cases of contemporary populist forces in two regions: the Dutch Partij voor de Vrijheid (PVV, Party for Freedom) and the Dansk Folkeparti (DF, Danish People's Party) in Northern Europe, and the Partido Socialista Unido de …

Canadian Multiculturalism And The Absence Of The Far Right, Cas Mudde

Cas Mudde

The far right has never been a prominent force in Canadian politics or society. Traditionally, they more resembled the North American than the West European model: ideologically dominated by right-wing populism and white supremacy, organizationally characterized by factionalism and sectarianism. The extreme right seems an almost negligible force today, in part reflecting a similar decline in the United States, while the radical right has so far been unable to build upon the recent upsurge of Islamophobia, as in Western Europe. We argue that the failure of the Canadian radical right is primarily the result of Canada's unique multiculturalism policy, which …

The Far Right And The European Elections, Cas Mudde

Cas Mudde

While the warnings employed different terms and pointed to somewhat different groups of parties and politicians, they all shared at least two major messages: (1) the Great Recession has led to the rise of the far right, and (2) the far right is going to win big in the European elections of May 2014. Despite the broad consensus in the media on these two points, which by now are received wisdoms, the first is factually incorrect and the second is highly unlikely. As so often in politics, these ‘truths’ are based on a toxic mix of conceptual stretching, faulty generalizations, …

Fighting The System? Populist Radical Right Parties And Party System Change, Cas Mudde Dec 2013

Fighting The System? Populist Radical Right Parties And Party System Change, Cas Mudde

Cas Mudde

This article assesses the impact of populist radical right parties on national party systems in Western Europe. Has the emergence of this new party family changed the interaction of party competition within Western European countries? First, I look at party system change with regard to numerical and numerical–ideological terms. Second, I evaluate the effect populist radical right parties have had on the different dimensions of party systems. Third, I assess the claim that the rise of populist radical right parties has created bipolarizing party system. Fourth, I look at the effect the rise of the populist radical right has had …

How Populist Are The People? Measuring Populist Attitudes In Voters, Agnes Akkerman, Cas Mudde, Andrej Zaslove

Cas Mudde

The sudden and perhaps unexpected appearance of populist parties in the 1990s shows no sign of immediately vanishing. The lion’s share of the research on populism has focused on defining populism, on the causes for its rise and continued success, and more recently on its influence on government and on public policy. Less research has, however, been conducted on measuring populist attitudes among voters. In this article, we seek to fill this gap by measuring populist attitudes and to investigate whether these attitudes can be linked with party preferences. We distinguish three political attitudes: (1) populist attitudes, (2) pluralist attitudes, …

'Ecoterrorism': Terrorist Threat Or Political Ploy?, Cas Mudde, Sivan Hirsch-Hoefler

Cas Mudde

This article examines the phenomenon of “ecoterrorism” from a conceptual and empirical perspective. We explore the political and academic debates over the meaning and use of the term ecoterrorism, and assess the validity of the concept of “ecoterrorism” and of the alleged threat of the Radical Environmentalist and Animal Rights (REAR) movement by analyzing the characteristics of both the movement and its actions. Our analysis shows that the term ecoterrorism should only be used for a small proportion of the actions of REAR movement. Consequently, counterterrorist measures should only target these terrorist minorities, rather than all groups and the broader …

Exclusionary Vs. Inclusionary Populism: Comparing The Contemporary Europe And Latin America, Cas Mudde, Cristobal Rovira Kaltwasser Dec 2012

Exclusionary Vs. Inclusionary Populism: Comparing The Contemporary Europe And Latin America, Cas Mudde, Cristobal Rovira Kaltwasser

Cas Mudde

Although there is a lively academic debate about contemporary populism in Europe and Latin America, almost no cross-regional research exists on this topic. This article aims to fill this gap by showing that a minimal and ideological definition of populism permits us to analyse current expressions of populism in both regions. Moreover, based on a comparison of four prototypical cases (FN/Le Pen and FPÖ/Haider in Europe and PSUV/Chávez and MAS/Morales in Latin America), we show that it is possible to identify two regional subtypes of populism: exclusionary populism in Europe and inclusionary populism in Latin America.

Three Decades Of Populist Radical Right Parties In Western Europe: So What?, Cas Mudde Dec 2012

Three Decades Of Populist Radical Right Parties In Western Europe: So What?, Cas Mudde

Cas Mudde

The populist radical right constitutes the most successful party family in postwar Western Europe. Many accounts in both academia and the media warn of the growing influence of populist radical right parties (PRRPs), the so-called ‘verrechtsing’ (or right turn) of European politics, but few provide empirical evidence of it. This lecture provides a first comprehensive analysis of the alleged effects of the populist radical right on the people, parties, policies and polities of Western Europe. The conclusions are sobering. The effects are largely limited to the broader immigration issue, and even here PRRPs should be seen as catalysts rather than …

Hungary's Illiberal Turn: Can Outsiders Help?, Cas Mudde, Erin K. Jenne

Cas Mudde

Since the conservative FIDESZ won the 2010 Hungarian elections, the new government under Premier Victor Orban has begun an unprecedented reform of the country's political system, strongly undermining the fundamentals of liberal democracy. With the opposition parties discredited, the only hope is in a slowly developing civil society. This article looks at what the international community (in particular the EU) can do to pressure the Hungarian government to respect liberal democracy and to strengthen the democratic opposition.

The Relationship Between Immigration And Nativism In Europe And North America, Cas Mudde Apr 2012

The Relationship Between Immigration And Nativism In Europe And North America, Cas Mudde

Cas Mudde

Mass migration is thought to be a major factor behind the rise of the radical right. But while there clearly is a relationship (particularly in Western Europe), the connection is not as straightforward as is often assumed. Higher levels of immigration in the three regions examined in this report - North America, Western Europe and Central and Eastern Europe - do not correlate automatically to higher votes for radical right parties.

In short, the relationship between immigration and nativism is unclear and complex. Many assumptions are based on feeble empirical evidence - suggesting the need for more cross-national data projects. …

Sussex V. North Carolina: The Comparative Study Of Party-Based Euroscepticism, Cas Mudde

Cas Mudde

Since the late 1990s a true cottage industry of "Euroscepticism studies" has emerged, which has given way to hundreds of publications in increasingly prominent journals. This working paper looks at two of the most important "schools" of Euroscepticism studies: Sussex and North Carolina. The two differ in many ways – e.g. definition, data and methods, scope – but account for much of the academic output on the topic. I first shortly describe the major publications of the two schools, before comparing and contrasting them on the basis of some key dimensions (definition, data, scope, explanations). The paper then discusses the …

Voices Of The People: Populism In Europe And Latin America Compared, Cas Mudde Jun 2011

Voices Of The People: Populism In Europe And Latin America Compared, Cas Mudde

Cas Mudde

While populism is a hotly debated topic around the world, most scholarship suffers from conceptual confusion and regional singularity. This paper compares European and Latin American populism, on the basis of a clear minimum definition, along three dimensions that dominate the scholarly literature on the topic: 1) economy vs. identity; 2) left-wing vs. rightwing; and 3) inclusion vs. exclusion. Empirically, our particular focus is on four prototypical cases of the predominant type of populism in these regions in the 1990–2010 period: Jörg Haider and the Freitheitliche Partei Österreichs (Austrian Freedom Party, FPÖ) and Jean-Marie Le Pen of the French Front …

Who's Afraid Of The European Radical Right?, Cas Mudde

Cas Mudde

Many observers of European politics warn that democracy on the continent is in peril. Conservative authors argue that European governments are threatened by a spineless surrender to “Islamofascism,” while liberals fret that Europe is being overtaken by “ghosts of a tortured past,” that is, parties on the “far Right.” Whereas the Islamofascism argument lacks empirical substance and is mostly based on (Islamo)phobia, the “tortured past” claim is largely the result of conceptual confusion and an exaggeration of reality. Neither contem- porary European democracies nor the contem- porary “far Right” groups are similar to their “equivalents” in the 1930s. The contemporary …

Data Usage In Quantitative Comparative Politics, Cas Mudde, Andreas Schedler

Cas Mudde

The quantitative study of comparative politics is often described as a data-driven enterprise. Employing an original dataset of comparative politics articles published in leading academic journals between 1989 and 2007, this article offers the first empirical analysis of data usage in comparative research. Tracing potential biases induced by data dependence, it assesses the structure of quantitative comparative research (by year, research design, geographic focus, and subject area), the use of country-specific and region-specific datasets, the introduction of original data, and the degree of concentration in data usage. Its empirical findings question cherished assumptions about the structure of the discipline.

Higher levels of immigration in the three regions examined in this report —North America, Western Europe, and Central and Eastern Europe — do not automatically correlate to more votes for radical-right parties.

The Populist Radical Right: A Pathological Normalcy, Cas Mudde Dec 2009

The Populist Radical Right: A Pathological Normalcy, Cas Mudde

Cas Mudde

In recent years more and more studies have pointed to the limitations of demand-side explanations of the electoral success of populist radical right parties. They argue that supply-side factors need to be included as well. While previous authors have made these claims on the basis of purely empirical arguments, this article provides a (meta)theoretical argumentation for the importance of supply-side explanations. It takes issue with the dominant view on the populist radical right, which considers it to be alien to mainstream values in contemporary western democracies – the ‘normal pathology thesis’. Instead, it argues that the populist radical right should …
