Perhaps one of the most politically contentious debates arguably revolves around minimum wage rates, and in particular federal minimum wage rate which sets a standard floor to which all states must follow. Each state in the US is allowed to raise its minimum wage rate above the federal standard, however many view increasing minimum wage rates to be a reversal of economic progress while others see it as a way to end poverty for many American citizens who work in minimum wage positions.
