Democratization And Extremism: The Case Of Tunisia, Mariam Abdelaty Jun 2021

Democratization And Extremism: The Case Of Tunisia, Mariam Abdelaty

Theses and Dissertations

Terrorism has become a real security threat for nearly every country in the world. Despite of the declaration and adoption of several procedures to fight terrorism and its perpetrators, countries have not yet succeeded to control the huge numbers of recruits being mobilized by terrorist organizations.[1] The literature has covered several factors that make recruits vulnerable and easily mobilized and radicalized by terrorist organizations, among which is the suppression of civil and political rights in non-democratic countries, as well as weak political institutions.[2] Among the Arab world countries, it has been puzzling to find out that despite of …

Chasing After Huntington's Third Wave Of Democratization: The Middle East Under Change, Reem Awny Abuzaid Jan 2011

Chasing After Huntington's Third Wave Of Democratization: The Middle East Under Change, Reem Awny Abuzaid

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

Escaping Huntington's three waves of democracy, the Middle East has become a phenomenon. Ever since, the Middle East scholars attempted extensively to rationalize the prevailing authoritarian regimes over the past four decades; a number of theories were proposed to address such a paradox. Studying authoritarianism has denied the Middle East academic society the chance to predict the current wave of political change that is being witnessed in the region. A draw back that could be believed to have left researchers with limited theoretical explanations for the on going experience, but that could always remain superficial. in fact a number of …

Is Egypt Ready For Democracy?, Nivin Abdel Meguid

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

In the early phases, revolutions are expected to be intensely focused on achieving political goals. Over the long term, however, “revolutions cannot be described as such unless they are able to produce deep permanent political transformations” (Bahaa Eldin, 2011). These political conversions can be counted complete according to their ability to go beyond direct political and social gains. I believe that it is time for the January 25 revolution, which has already realized a great part of its political targets, to leverage its grassroots popularity to get the best use of Egypt's social capital in passing the critical period of …

The Muslim Brotherhood is the main opposition group in Egypt. As the parliamentary elections of November confirmed this status, the organization maintains its demands for political inclusion. This does not seem a probable scenario in the short-term though slow moves towards reform are being taken by the government. The first multi-candidate presidential election of September is one of such steps. If this will be branded an isolated event or the starting point of a wider process of transition remains to be seen. This study focuses on the Muslim Brotherhood and its eventual formal inclusion within a scenario of democratization. Arguments …

The Judges Club Of Egypt: A Space For Defending Democracy And The Independence Of The Judiciary, Atef Shahat Said Jan 2004

The Judges Club Of Egypt: A Space For Defending Democracy And The Independence Of The Judiciary, Atef Shahat Said

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the Judges Club of Egypt [JCE] between January 1985 and March 2004. My research demonstrates that Egyptian judges rely on the JCE as a space for defending democratic reform and the independence of the Judiciary in Egypt. I will argue that while several laws and internal regulations within the Egyptian judicial structure forbid judges from being involved in any political activity, Egyptian judges craft strategic discursive mechanisms for expanding the role of the JCE beyond its seemingly confined function within the court. This thesis suggests that the JCE is a â meta-spaceâ [neither NGO nor officially part …
