Rafael Torres, Jr. - Does The United States Supreme Court Decision In The Citizens United V. The Federal Election Commission Case Affect The Voluntary Departure Of United States Senators, Rafael Torres Jr. Jul 2013

Rafael Torres, Jr. - Does The United States Supreme Court Decision In The Citizens United V. The Federal Election Commission Case Affect The Voluntary Departure Of United States Senators, Rafael Torres Jr.

Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2013

The United States Supreme Court decision in the case of Citizens United v. the Federal Election Commission raised concerns about how unlimited independent expenditures by organizations would influence campaigns and elections. This concern has been expressed through media and politicians, but research on the subject is conflicting. One argument is that protecting unlimited contributions as free speech gives a disproportionate amount of speech to non-voting entities. The other argument is that speech does not directly influence elections and it is ultimately the voter's decision on which candidate to choose. Laws that affect elections also affect departures. The connection between campaign …

Egypt-U.S. Relations In A New Era: Challenges And Possibilities, Magda Shahin

Faculty Books

Since the January 2011 revolution, Egyptian-American relations have experienced new tensions and confrontations, which have led to a re-examination of the relationship as well as the desire on the part of the Egyptians for a more equal partnership. It is with this in mind that the Prince Alwaleed Center for American Studies and Research (CASAR) at the American University in Cairo, in cooperation with the Faculty of Economics and Political Science at Cairo University, and a senior group of experts have embarked on a study of the foundations, challenges, and future prospects for Egyptian-American relations. The goal of the working …

Does Killing Drug Cartel Leaders Increase Violence In Mexico?, Alex Wilson, Jay Goodliffe Apr 2013

Does Killing Drug Cartel Leaders Increase Violence In Mexico?, Alex Wilson, Jay Goodliffe

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

Soon after Felipe Calderon became president of Mexico, he drastically changed the country's policy concerning drug cartels and drug trade. The policy moved from destroying production of drugs, such as burning poppy and marijuana fields, to an attack on the organization of the Drug Cartels. Opponents of this action, argue that the policy has been ineffective in reducing drug flow, but has only increased violence. One argument made for the increasing violence is that the killing of drug cartel leaders leads to fractionalization and competition within the cartel. This fractionalization then leads to violence as different members of the cartel …

The Best Way To Select State Court Judges, Curtis Thomas, Sven Wilson Apr 2013

The Best Way To Select State Court Judges, Curtis Thomas, Sven Wilson

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

Due to the spending increase in campaigns for state court judges and to the controversial positions taken by state court judges on high-profile issues, research has increased into the methods state use to select their judges. This poster highlights research into the best method for selecting state court judges. By comparing the different methods for selecting state court judges currently in use according to goals considered to be relevant to this issue, I conclude that the best method for selecting state court judges is a combination of appointment for a state's highest court judges and non-partisan elections for a state's …

Ms-134: William C. Wright Collection Of The Eugene Mccarthy 1968 Presidential Campaign, Karen Dupell Drickamer

All Finding Aids

This collection contains the remaining records of the Delaware State Steering Committee during the 1968 Eugene McCarthy presidential campaign. Unfortunately, the Delaware State Steering Committee kept very little in the way of written reports. The content of this collection is what was left when the office was cleaned out: newsletters, flyers, posters, newspapers, a 45 rpm recording, campaign instructions, posters, and buttons. The press releases contain the contents of many of McCarthy’s speeches and writings.

Special Collections and College Archives Finding Aids are discovery tools used to describe and provide access to our holdings. Finding aids include historical and biographical …

Creating Knowledge, Volume 6, 2013

Creating Knowledge

It is my great pleasure to introduce the sixth volume of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences’ “Creating Knowledge,” our undergraduate student scholarship and research journal. First published in 2008, the journal is the outcome of an initiative to enhance and enrich the academic quality of the student experience within the college. Through this publication, the college seeks to encourage students to become actively engaged in creating scholarship and research and gives them a venue for the publication of their essays.

This sixth volume is, however, unlike the previous ones in one major respect: the papers in this …

[Introduction To] Leadership Ethics, Joanne B. Ciulla, Mary Uhl-Bien, Patricia H. Werhane Jan 2013

[Introduction To] Leadership Ethics, Joanne B. Ciulla, Mary Uhl-Bien, Patricia H. Werhane

Bookshelf

Research into the topic of leadership ethics has grown and evolved gradually over the past few decades. This timely set arrives at an important moment in the subject's history. In a relatively new field, such a collection offers scholars more than articles on a topic; it also serves to outline the parameters of the field. Carefully structured over three volumes, the material runs through an understanding of the key philosophic and practical questions in leadership ethics along with a wide range of literature - from disciplines including philosophy, business and political science, to name a few- that speaks to these …

[Introduction To] Political Aid And Arab Activism: Democracy Promotion, Justice And Representation, Sheila Carapico Jan 2013

[Introduction To] Political Aid And Arab Activism: Democracy Promotion, Justice And Representation, Sheila Carapico

Bookshelf

What does it mean to promote “transitions to democracy” in the Middle East? How have North American, European, and multilateral projects advanced human rights, authoritarian retrenchment, or Western domination? This book examines transnational programs in Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Yemen, Lebanon, Tunisia, Algeria, the exceptional cases of Palestine and Iraq, and the Arab region at large during two tumultuous decades. To understand the controversial and contradictory effects of political aid, Sheila Carapico analyzes discursive and professional practices in four key subfields: the rule of law, electoral design and monitoring, women's political empowerment, and civil society. From the institutional arrangements for extraordinary …

[Introduction To] Racism In The Nation's Service: Government Workers And The Color Line In Woodrow Wilson's America, Eric S. Yellin Jan 2013

[Introduction To] Racism In The Nation's Service: Government Workers And The Color Line In Woodrow Wilson's America, Eric S. Yellin

Bookshelf

Between the 1880s and 1910s, thousands of African Americans passed civil service exams and became employed in the executive offices of the federal government. However, by 1920, promotions to well-paying federal jobs had nearly vanished for black workers. Eric S. Yellin argues that the Wilson administration's successful 1913 drive to segregate the federal government was a pivotal episode in the age of progressive politics. Yellin investigates how the enactment of this policy, based on Progressives' demands for whiteness in government, imposed a color line on American opportunity and implicated Washington in the economic limitation of African Americans for decades to …

[Chapter 1 From] Welfare And Party Politics In Latin America, Jennifer Pribble Jan 2013

[Chapter 1 From] Welfare And Party Politics In Latin America, Jennifer Pribble

Bookshelf

Systems of social protection can provide crucial assistance to the poorest and most vulnerable groups in society, but not all systems are created equally. In Latin America, social policies have historically exhibited large gaps in coverage and high levels of inequality in benefit size. Since the late 1990s, countries in this region have begun to grapple with these challenges, enacting a series of reforms to healthcare, social assistance and education policy. While some of these initiatives have moved in a universal direction, others have maintained existing segmentation or moved in a regressive direction. Welfare and Party Politics in Latin America …
