The Necessity Of The Employment Non-Discrimination Act, Lucas B. Mckaig Dec 2013

The Necessity Of The Employment Non-Discrimination Act, Lucas B. Mckaig

Lucas B McKaig

Currently there is no comprehensive federal legislation in the United States protecting LGBT Employees. The Employment Non-Discrimination act would rectify this by making sexual orientation and gender identity protected classes.

Discerning For Peace In Africa: The Sudan Civil Wars And Peace Processes 1955-2013, Conrad John Masabo Mr. Dec 2013

Discerning For Peace In Africa: The Sudan Civil Wars And Peace Processes 1955-2013, Conrad John Masabo Mr.

Conrad John Masabo Mr.

Separation of the Sudan into the Republic of Sudan (North) and the Republic of Southern Sudan (South) was globally extolled as the long-lasting solution to one of the longest civil wars in post-Colonial Africa. However, recent developments in Sudan: continued clashes between north and south, crises in the contested areas and tribal civil wars have uncovered that: separation without addressing the principal root causes of the conflicts is not the panacea to prone and protracted civil wars. Taking a historical analysis framework, the paper attempts to tackle issues of causes, opportunities and challenges for peace in Sudan.

40 Years In Paradox: Post-Normalisation Sino-Japanese Relations, Yinan He Dec 2013

40 Years In Paradox: Post-Normalisation Sino-Japanese Relations, Yinan He

Yinan He

Post-normalisation Sino-Japanese relations have been fraught with contradictions. In particular, three paradoxes stand out over the past 40 years. First, despite many shared geopolitical and economic interests, China and Japan have never developed genuine strategic cooperation, and since the 2000s have even evinced a trend towards thinly-veiled or open rivalry. Second, time, rather than healing the wounds of past wars, has since the mid-1980s yielded only a more vivid and bitter recollection of history that has bedevilled both official and popular relations. Third, diplomatic and commercial ties as well as “thick” societal contacts developed since normalisation have failed to bridge …

The Killer Idea: How Some Gunslinging Anarchists Held Freedom Of Speech At Gunpoint, Gert A. Van Vugt Msc

Gert A van Vugt MSc

In May 2013, the first all-plastic, 3D printed gun was fired. This paper offers a detailed description of the origins and development of the printable gun. It elucidates the transformation of the principal narrative in the increasing media coverage from circumventing arms regulation to defending free speech, highlighting the role of Defense Distributed and their strategic framing of the printable gun. Finally, the uptake of the latter narrative by early popular and scholarly contributions is discussed. The paper highlights the political impact of narrative formation in debates about regulating 3D printing and the communication of printable designs, and suggests an …

Presidential Rankings, Legacy, And Economic Performance 1869-2013, Harry M. Hipler Nov 2013

Presidential Rankings, Legacy, And Economic Performance 1869-2013, Harry M. Hipler

Harry M Hipler

The economy influences presidents’ rankings by scholars. Based on initial observations of presidents from 1869 to 2013 and a quantitative correlation coefficient analysis of these presidents by examining unemployment and GDP, there is a moderate positive correlation between economic performance and presidential greatness for US presidents from 1869 to 2013. Thus, for a president to have an opportunity to achieve greatness status, he must have a positive economic performance record during his administration in office without which he will not obtain presidential greatness. Contrasting with previous literature and research, my result supports the necessity and constructive importance of economic performance …

¿Que Dejaron Las Elecciones?, Augusto Reina, Maximo Reina

Augusto Reina

National Power As A Critical Terrorist Target Choice: A Dataset On The Activities Of The Jamaaahl Al-Sunnah Li-Da’Wawa Al-Jihad (Boko Haram) Sect In Nigeria (2009-2012), Henry U. Ufomba Oct 2013

henry u ufomba

Should we consider a terrorist group as a rational player in its interaction with the state? If yes, does this give room for a rational expectation in its target choice? Situated within these questions, this dataset present the activities of the terrorist group JamaaAhl al-Sunnah li-da’wawa al-Jihad popularly known as the Boko Haram sect in Nigeria between 2009 to 2012. The key objective of the dataset is to match each of Boko Haram’s target type with the primary assumption of the Uyo School in other to aid future empirical study on the subject to determine its robustness.

A Crise Social Induzida, Eliel Matias Da Rosa

Book Review: The Arab Spring, Democracy And Security: Domestic And International Ramifications, Efraim Inbar (Ed), Zenonas Tziarras

Zenonas Tziarras

To oer analysis on an on going political event is always a challenging task. Yet, the “Arab Spring” has given rise to many questions about the past, the present and the future of the Arab world and the Middle East more generally. The Arab Spring, Democracy and Security:Domesc and International Ramifications addresses some of these questions. The chapters of this edited volume have been written by selected Israeli scholars focusing on “issues such as democratization, the role of economic factors in political change and explanations for variations in regime stability in the Middle East.” The relationship between internal and external …

Turkey-Egypt: Turkish Model, Political Culture And Regional Power Struggle, Zenonas Tziarras Oct 2013

Turkey-Egypt: Turkish Model, Political Culture And Regional Power Struggle, Zenonas Tziarras

Zenonas Tziarras

This paper argues that although, during the governance of the Muslim Brotherhood, the promotion of the Turkish model through political and economic support was welcomed in Egypt, it is not compatible with the country and cannot be emulated, while there are also different perceptions about the matter on the elite and mass political culture levels. Moreover, based on the political culture(s) of the county, it is very likely that future governments in Egypt would want to assume a greater regional role. Ultimately this means that the Turkish model would have failed as a means of soft power and hegemony, while …

A Spatial Analysis Of The Second Republic, Riccardo Pelizzo Sep 2013

A Spatial Analysis Of The Second Republic, Riccardo Pelizzo

riccardo pelizzo

The Optimal Classification method is applied to a newly created data set to provide a spatial map of the Italian Second Republic (1996–2008). A bi-dimensional political space was found in the XIII Legislature and virtually a one-dimensional political space in the XIV and XV Legislatures. In addition, the main dimension is explained along the government–opposition dimension rather than on the traditional left–right dimension. During the Second Republic, Italy experienced changes in the electoral system and in the format of parties. The data are used to discuss the implications of either change on the dimensionality space. It was found that the …

An Affordable Model For Enduring Iss Mission Operations With Increased Scientific Productivity, Donovan Torgerson, Josh Berk, Jeremy Straub, Anders Nervold Sep 2013

An Affordable Model For Enduring Iss Mission Operations With Increased Scientific Productivity, Donovan Torgerson, Josh Berk, Jeremy Straub, Anders Nervold

Jeremy Straub

The current model of operations for the International Space Station (ISS) is an exercise in futility. Persistent maintenance, risk aversion, high ground support and logistics costs and a lack of scientific productivity have rendered the world's most expensive laboratory severely underutilized.

An alternate management paradigm for ISS operations, based upon an approach utilized by national, state and local governments for the maintenance of public infrastructure (e.g., roadways) is presented. These governments, instead of trying to become experts at estimating the costs of, planning for and conducting repairs and upkeep on this infrastructure, instead hire a commercial vendor to perform these …

La Larga Marcha De Los Presidenciables, Augusto Reina, Maximo Reina

Augusto Reina

Voice Without Say: Why Capital-Managed Firms Aren’T (Genuinely) Participatory, Justin Schwartz Aug 2013

Voice Without Say: Why Capital-Managed Firms Aren’T (Genuinely) Participatory, Justin Schwartz

Justin Schwartz

Why are most capitalist enterprises of any size organized as authoritarian bureaucracies rather than incorporating genuine employee participation that would give the workers real authority? Even firms with employee participation programs leave virtually all decision-making power in the hands of management. The standard answer is that hierarchy is more economically efficient than any sort of genuine participation, so that participatory firms would be less productive and lose out to more traditional competitors. This answer is indefensible. After surveying the history, legal status, and varieties of employee participation, I examine and reject as question-begging the argument that the rarity of genuine …

Legislative Turnover And Institutional Reforms: Evidence From The Bolivian Case, Miguel Centellas Aug 2013

Legislative Turnover And Institutional Reforms: Evidence From The Bolivian Case, Miguel Centellas

Miguel Centellas

Despite increased attention to Latin American legislatures, we know little about legislative candidate selection—particularly in countries that underwent institutional reforms. This paper analyzes candidate selection in Bolivia’s lower legislative chamber using database of candidate & legislator biographical data. Bolivia is an interesting case because it significantly altered its electoral system (from list-PR to MMP). Using legislative candidate biographical data (winners and losers), the paper observes effects in changes in candidate recruitment across pre- and post-reform periods. In addition to common indicators (age, gender, professional association, etc.), the paper focuses on three key candidate dimensions: “localness” (connection to electoral district), “partisanship” …

Os Mecanismos Institucionais Da Ditadura De 1937: Uma Análise Das Contradições Do Regime De Interventorias Federais Nos Estados, Adriano Codato Jul 2013

Os Mecanismos Institucionais Da Ditadura De 1937: Uma Análise Das Contradições Do Regime De Interventorias Federais Nos Estados, Adriano Codato

Adriano Codato

The aim of this article is to analyze the political intervention regime in states through the study of Federal Interventorship mechanisms. We center our attention on the "Estado Novo" and do not take into account any particular Interventoria, nor any specific struggle between a political faction in a given state with new leaders of the National State. The focus, throughout the discussion of evidence from some singular states (São Paulo, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Minas Gerais), collected both in historiography and at Getulio Vargas archive, is in the analysis of the main difficulties that the Vargas …

Evolving Christian Attitudes Towards Personal And National Self-Defense, David B. Kopel Jul 2013

Evolving Christian Attitudes Towards Personal And National Self-Defense, David B. Kopel

David B Kopel

This Article analyzes the changes in orthodox Christian attitudes towards defensive violence. While the Article begins in the 19th century and ends in the 21st, most of the Article is about the 20th century. The Article focuses on American Catholicism and on the Vatican, although there is some discussion of American Protestantism.

In the nineteenth and early in the twentieth centuries, the traditional Christian concepts of Just War and of the individual's duty to use force to defend himself and his family remained uncontroversial, as they had been for centuries.

Disillusionment over World War I turned many Catholics and Protestants …

A Theory Without A Movement, A Hope Without A Name: The Future Of Marxism In A Post-Marxist World, Justin Schwartz Jun 2013

A Theory Without A Movement, A Hope Without A Name: The Future Of Marxism In A Post-Marxist World, Justin Schwartz

Justin Schwartz

Just as Marx's insights into capitalism have been most strikingly vindicated by the rise of neoliberalism and the near-collapse of the world economy, Marxism as social movement has become bereft of support. Is there any point in people who find Marx's analysis useful in clinging to the term "Marxism" - which Marx himself rejected -- at time when self-identified Marxist organizations and societies have collapsed or renounced the identification, and Marxism own working class constituency rejects the term? I set aside bad reasons to give on "Marxism," such as that the theory is purportedly refuted, that its adoption leads necessarily …

Explaining Prolonged Silences In Transitional Justice: The Disappeared In Cyprus And Spain, Iosif Kovras Jun 2013

Explaining Prolonged Silences In Transitional Justice: The Disappeared In Cyprus And Spain, Iosif Kovras

Iosif Kovras

The article examines why some postconflict societies defer the recovery of those who forcibly disappeared as a result of political violence, even after a fully fledged democratic regime is consolidated. The prolonged silences in Cyprus and Spain contradict the experience of other countries such as Bosnia, Guatemala, and South Africa, where truth recovery for disappeared or missing persons was a central element of the transition to peace and democracy. Exhumations of mass graves containing the victims from the two periods of violence in Cyprus (1963–1974) and the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) was delayed up until the early 2000s. Cyprus and …

Cyber Attack: A Dull Tool To Sharpen Foreign Policy, Emilio Iasiello Jun 2013

Cyber Attack: A Dull Tool To Sharpen Foreign Policy, Emilio Iasiello

Emilio Iasiello

This paper examines how cyber attacks, if indeed conducted by nation states, have been unsuccessful in supporting states' foreign policy objectives. By analyzing three prominent case studies, I show that as a result of geopolitical tensions, cyber attacks were implemented to further nation state objectives in support of foreign policy considerations and failed to achieve their respective outcomes despite successful deployment against their intended targets. The three case studies, hypothetical scenarios because attribution has not been confirmed, include: (1) the October 2012 distributed denial of service attacks targeting the U.S. banking sector; (2) the 2012 Stuxnet attack against Iran; and …

Institucionalização Do Sistema Partidário Ou Evolução Da Competição? Uma Proposta De Interpretação Econômica Da Volatilidade Eleitoral, Paulo S. Peres Jun 2013

Institucionalização Do Sistema Partidário Ou Evolução Da Competição? Uma Proposta De Interpretação Econômica Da Volatilidade Eleitoral, Paulo S. Peres

Paulo S. Peres
