The Indiana Congressional Delegation And Foreign Policy Issues 1939-1941, Loretta S. Glaze

This paper is an examination of the foreign policy attitudes of Indiana's United States Senators and Representatives during the critical years before the Second World War. My purpose is to determine whether these particular Mid-Westerners were a part of the isolationist bloc in Congress which exerted a significant influence on the formulation of foreign policy. The scope of the study is limited to an elucidation of the individual views as expressed in Congress b the members of the delegation and an analysis of the campaign for re-election waged by each of them as it relates to the broader issue.

The intended result of this study is a presentation of the force of personality as the chief explanatory factor in the dispute between Hamilton and Jefferson, and as chief factor in Washington's role as unwilling catalyst. The boundaries will be the historical discipline, utilizing the more measurable psychological insights as given above. The result will hopefully be an insightful connection between personality, behavior, and history.

Few chapters in American history have been filled with more importance and had more impact upon this nation politically, socially and morally than has the era of active involvement in the land war in Vietnam, during the mid 1960's. The war has taken almost 50,000 American lives, has contributed directly to the political end of one American President and had plunged the United States into an ordeal of examination and internal turmoil rarely seen in U.S. history.
