A Holistic Approach To The Management Of Human Consumption Towards An Economics Of Well-Being, Gandolfo Dominici, Vasja Roblek

Vasja Roblek

The goal of this conceptual paper is to draw attention to the problems caused by the rapid growth of the global economy, coupled with high population growth and excessive exploitation of natural resources. It is necessary to be aware that the global economy will not be able to grow at the actual speed in the long term. A paradigm shift in production and consumption is therefore necessary to avoid the collapse of ecosystems and the concurrent reduction of stocks of natural resources. This is the reason why capitalism has to take a new direction towards a sustainable and naturally harmonized …

Working Regions: Reconnecting Innovation And Production In The Knowledge Economy, Jennifer Clark Apr 2013

Working Regions: Reconnecting Innovation And Production In The Knowledge Economy, Jennifer Clark

Jennifer Clark

Working Regions focuses on policy aimed at building sustainable and resilient regional economies in the wake of the global recession. Using examples of four ‘working regions’ — regions where research and design functions and manufacturing still coexist in the same cities — the book argues for a new approach to regional economic development. It does this by highlighting policies that foster innovation and manufacturing in small firms, focus research centers on pushing innovation down the supply chain, and support dynamic, design-driven firm networks. This book traces several key themes underlying the core proposition that for a region to work, it …

The Dangers Of Diversity: Ethnic Fractionalization And The Rule Of Law, Michael Touchton Mar 2013

The Dangers Of Diversity: Ethnic Fractionalization And The Rule Of Law, Michael Touchton

Michael Touchton

Research linking ethnic cleavages to economic underdevelopment is a hallmark of recent efforts to explain economic growth. Similarly, the rule of law as a credible commitment to property rights and contract enforcement is also identified with economic development. Rather than treating these factors as rival explanations for economic development around the world, I propose the rule of law as the causal mechanism through which ethnic fractionalization (EF) influences growth in many countries. I argue ethnic diversity negatively impacts the rule of law due to the prevalence of ethnically-based patronage networks in developing countries. Public officials, I argue, face greater incentives …

Neighborhood Dynamics And The Housing Price Effects Of Spatially Targeted Economic Development Policy, Douglas J. Krupka, Douglas S. Noonan Jan 2009

Neighborhood Dynamics And The Housing Price Effects Of Spatially Targeted Economic Development Policy, Douglas J. Krupka, Douglas S. Noonan

Douglas S. Noonan

Neighborhoods are the result of a complicated interplay between residential choice, housing supply and the influences of the larger metropolitan system on its constituent parts. We model this interplay as a system of reduced-form equations in order to examine the effects of a generous spatially targeted economic development program (the federal Empowerment Zone program) on neighborhood characteristics, especially housing values. This system of equations approach allows us to compute direct effects of the policy intervention as well as the effects mediated through non-price channels such as changes in the housing stock or neighborhood demographics. In the process, we are able …

Public–Private Partnerships In A Texas Municipality:The Case Of The City Of Houston Tax Increment Reinvestment Zones, Andrew Ewoh

Andrew I.E. Ewoh

This article examines the public–private partnerships' (PPPs') processes, governance structures, financing, and promotion strategies through tax increment reinvestment zones' (TIRZs') provision in various projects and their impacts in the City of Houston, Texas. In conclusion, the analysis delineates the policy implication of using PPPs or TIRZs as a government reinvention tool in public service delivery in the 21st century and recommends how to implement successful partnerships.
