The TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) will be part of ESA’s Sentinel-5 Precursor (S5P) satellite platform scheduled for launch in 2015. TROPOMI will monitor methane and carbon monoxide concentrations in the Earth’s atmosphere by measuring spectra of back-scattered sunlight in the short-wave infrared (SWIR).

We retrieved column-averaged dry air mole fractions of atmospheric carbon dioxide (XCO 2) from backscattered short-wave infrared (SWIR) sunlight measured by the Japanese Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite (GOSAT). Over two years of XCO 2 retrieved from GOSAT is compared with XCO 2 inferred from collocated SWIR measurements by seven ground-based Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) stations. The average difference between GOSAT and TCCON XCO 2 for individual TCCON sites ranges from -0.87 ppm to 0.77 ppm with a mean value of 0.1 ppm and standard deviation of 0.56 ppm. Conducting composite films containing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were prepared by using the biopolymer kappa-carrageenan (KC) as a dispersant. Rheological studies indicated that 0.5% w/v was the appropriate KC concentration for dispersing CNTs. Our results showed that multiwalled nanotubes (MWNTs) required less sonic energy than single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) for the dispersion process to be complete. Films prepared by vacuum filtration exhibited higher conductivity and improved mechanical characteristics compared to those prepared by evaporative casting. All composite films displayed sensitivity to water vapour, but MWNT films were more sensitive than SWNT films.

The electrical and mechanical characteristics of composite materials prepared using evaporative casting and vacuum filtration of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) dispersed in the biopolymer s-carrageenan (IC) are reported. It is demonstrated that the contact angle of water with films is proportional to the CNT mass and volume fraction, which is used to compare the properties of buckypapers with those of evaporative cast films. Multi-walled carbon nanotube films were found to exhibit higher conductivity values compared to those observed for single-walled carbon nanotubes composites at comparable contact angle values up to true nanotube volume fraction of 0.12. Tilted well-aligned carbon micro- and nano-hybrid rods were synthesized on Si at different substrate temperatures and incident angles of carbon source beam using the hot filament physical vapour deposition technique. The morphologic surfaces, chemical compositions and bond structures of the oblique carbon rod-like structures were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron diffraction and Raman scattering spectroscopy. The field emission behaviour of the fabricated samples was also measured.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is retrieved daily and globally from space-borne IASI radiance spectra using the Fast Optimal Retrievals on Layers for IASI (FORLI) software developed at the Universit´e Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). The IASI CO total column product for 2008 from the most recent FORLI retrieval version (20100815) is evaluated using correlative CO profile products retrieved from groundbased solar absorption Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) observations at the following FTIR spectrometer sites from the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC): Ny-A° lesund, Kiruna, Bremen, Jungfraujoch, Iza˜na and Wollongong. Column-averaged volume mixing ratios of carbon dioxide and methane retrieved from the Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite (GOSAT) Short-Wavelength InfraRed observation (GOSAT SWIR XCO2 and XCH4 ) were compared with the reference calibrated data obtained by ground-based high-resolution Fourier Transform Spectrometers (g-b FTSs) participating in the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON). Preliminary results are as follows: the GOSAT SWIR XCO2 and XCH4 (Version 01.xx) are biased low by 8.85 ±4.75 ppm (2.3±1.2 %) and 20.4±18.9 ppb (1.2±1.1 %), respectively. "Attribution of the causes of atmospheric trace gas and aerosol variability often requires the use of high resolution time series of anthropogenic and natural emissions inventories. Here we developed an approach for representing synoptic-and diurnal-scale temporal variability in fire emissions for the Global Fire Emissions Database version 3 (GFED3). We disaggregated monthly GFED3 emissions during 2003-2009 to a daily time step using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-derived measurements of active fires from Terra and Aqua satellites. We use a global chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem CTM) to interpret observations of black carbon (BC) and organic aerosol (OA) from the NASA ARCTAS aircraft campaign over the North American Arctic in April 2008, as well as longer-term records in surface air and in snow (2007-2009). BC emission inventories for North America, Europe, and Asia in the model are tested by comparison with surface air observations over these source regions. Russian open fires were the dominant source of OA in the Arctic troposphere during ARCTAS but we find that BC was of prevailingly anthropogenic (fossil fuel and biofuel) origin, particularly …

In this work, kappa-carrageenan (KC) is used to prepare composite dispersions consisting of single-walled (SWNTs) and multi-walled (MWNTs) carbon nanotubes. Free-standing composite films were prepared by evaporative casting and vacuum filtration of these dispersions.

The use of sediment quality guidelines to predict the toxicity of metals in sediments is limited by an inadequate understanding of exposure pathways and by poor causal links between exposure and effects. For a 10-d exposure to Cu-spiked sediments, toxicity to the amphipod Melita plumulosa was demonstrated to occur through a combination of dissolved and dietary Cu exposure pathways, but for the bivalves Spisula trigonella and Tellina deltoidalis, toxicity occurred primarily by exposure to dissolved Cu. For relatively oxidized sediments that had moderate amounts of organic carbon (2.6-8.3% OC), silt (20-100%

We report on the diffusion of vitamin B12 through gellan gum-carbon nanotube hydrogels. The addition of carbon nanotubes to gellan gum reduced the vitamin B12 diffusion coefficient from 1.70 x 10-6 cm2/s to 0.70 x 10-6 cm2/s.

We use aircraft observations of carbon monoxide (CO) from the NASA ARCTAS and NOAA ARCPAC campaigns in April 2008 together with multiyear (2003– 2008) CO satellite data from the AIRS instrument and a global chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem) to better understand the sources, transport, and interannual variability of pollution in the Arctic in spring. Model simulation of the aircraft data gives best estimates of CO emissions in April 2008 of 26 Tg month−1 for Asian anthropogenic, 9.4 for European anthropogenic, 4.1 for North American anthropogenic, 15 for Russian biomass burning (anomalously large that year), and 23 for Southeast Asian biomass …

Catalyst support materials exhibit great influence on the performance and durability of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. This minireview article summarises recent developments into carbon nanotube-based support materials for PEM fuel cells, including the membrane electrode assembly (MEA). The advantages of using CNTs to promote catalyst performance and stability, a perspective on research directions and strategies to improve fuel cell performance and durability are discussed. It is hoped that this mini-review will act as a conduit for future developments in catalyst supports and MEA design for PEM fuel cells.

In its conducting form, carbon has proven to be a versatile, robust and high performing electrode material in areas such as energy conversion, energy storage and even medical bionics. The electrical resistance of carbon nanotube networks (NNs) prepared from combinations of gellan gum, xanthan gum, Triton X-100, SWNT and MWNT is reported. It is demonstrated that the NN conductivity can be obtained by analysing the resistance of two overlapping NN as a function of their overlap distance. Unexpectedly, the connectivity between two overlapping NN was found to scale with the electrical conductivity over 4 orders of magnitude. Insights into the dependence of inter-NN contact on applied pressure were obtained.

The inkjet printing of CNTbiopolymer composite inks onto solid and gel substrates was investigated. Changing the substrate from glass to gel resulted in an increase in the resistance of printed materials from 9.85 kΩ/cm to 39.42 kΩ/cm.

The Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) produces precise measurements of the column average dry-air mole fractions of CO2, CO, CH4, N2O and H2O at a variety of sites worldwide. These observations rely on spectroscopic parameters that are not known with sufficient accuracy to compute total columns that can be used in combination with in situ measurements. The TCCON must therefore be calibrated to World Meteorological Orga-nization (WMO) in situ trace gas measurement scales. Modelling and soil sampling suggest that changes in soil C are likely to be < 1 t C/ha/y. Published accounts indicate that confirming such small changes by traditional soil sampling is error-prone and requires investigations of > 10 years. In the quest for catalysts for the electrocatalytic reduction of , a cobalt phthalocyanine/polypyrrole (CoPc/PPy) composite electrode has been developed. The electrode is prepared by drop casting CoPc onto the PPy film from the CoPc/tetrahydrofuran solution (1 mg/mL). The onset potential for reduction occurred at potentials 160 mV more positive than observed with a simple PPy electrode. Furthermore, in the potentiostatic electrolysis, the catalytic current for reduction at CoPc/PPy was very stable, with a higher current density and current efficiency when compared to the PPy electrode.

All-biocompatible carbon-nanotube fibers were formed using wet spinning. In this process the spinning solutions used are carbon nanotubes dispersed using biomolecules such as hyaluronic acid and chitosan. We compare the effect of a coagulation bath containing either a polymer binder, e.g., polyethyleneimine, or simply a precipitating solvent system, e.g., acetone. The electrical, mechanical, and morphological properties of the resulting fibers were studied. Biocompatible electrode structures were generated suitable for a variety of biomedical applications, e.g.,in biosensors or in systems where the application of an electrical field is advantageous e.g., stimulation of electrically excitable cells such as nerve and muscle cells.

RECENT developments in water and carbon trading and biofuel production highlight the need to document the water and carbon balances of Australia’s cropping systems including sugarcane. This paper presents the results of studies of evaporation and CO2 exchange throughout the growing seasons of two sugarcane crops, a 1st ratoon crop at Murwillumbah where burnt-cane was practised and a 5th ratoon crop at Mackay where trash blanketing was employed. The commercialization of carbon nanotube electrodes is impeded by the lack of bulk processing techniques. One approach to overcome this impediment is the growth of macroscopic CNT composite architectures which do not require any extra processing. Eutrophication and climate change, key environmental concerns, are both linked to the carbon and nitrogen cycles hence the improved understanding of these cycles is essential. Currently, there is no system that simultaneously measures the fluxes of the three key gas phase products of nitrogen and carbon cycling (CO2, CH4 and N2O) in submerged ecosystems with hourly time resolution. Ferritin protein was noncovalently immobilized onto single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). This SWNT/ferritin composite was characterized using cyclic voltammetry, UV-visible spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The use of the SWNT/ferritin film as an amperometric biosensor was demonstrated by sensing ascorbic acid in phosphate-buffered saline solution with a sensitivity of 767 uAmg. It demonstrated that ferritin protein bound to SWNTs enhances the oxidation reaction of ascorbic acid over 11-fold.

New results of CO global total column measurements using the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) aboard the Aqua satellite in comparison with Measurements of Pollution in the Troposphere (MOPITT) sensor aboard the Terra satellite are presented. Both data sets are validated using ground-based total column measurements in Russia and Australia. A quality parameter based on the Profile Percent A Priori values from the standard MOPITT product is introduced. AIRS data (version 4) for biomass burning events are in agreement or lower than both MOPITT and ground measurements, but CO bursts can be seen by AIRS in most cases. For the cases …

The inkjet processing of water dispersable polymer carbon nanotube composite materials is reported. Single printed layers displayed good optical transparency, sheet resistance, and conductivity. It is demonstrated that an alcohol sensor based on a single printed layer of polymer carbon nanotube composite could operate at a lower voltage compared to a sensor based on a single printed layer of the polymer.

The controlled deposition of polyaniline carbon nanotube composites by inkjet printing is reported. It is demonstrated that the sheet resistance and transmittance can be expressed in amount of composite and MWNT material deposited. The most efficient way for improving the sheet resistance while keeping the cost in optical transparency to a minimum is by increasing the total amount of material deposited, rather than increasing MWNT loading fraction.
