Predictors Of Sleep Quality: Depression, Anxiety, And Sleep Self-Efficacy, Rayanna Johnson

The objective of the current study was to examine the relationship between depression, anxiety, sleep self-efficacy and sleep quality in college students by using both objective measures and self-report data. Participants included undergraduate students from a small liberal arts college who wore an ActiGraph wGT3X-BT wristband for a period of seven nights. At the end of the seven nights, participants also completed the Beck Anxiety Inventory, Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, the Sleep Self-Efficacy Scale, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Results indicated that higher sleep self-efficacy scores were associated with lower anxiety and depression scores. Higher self-reported sleep quality, …

This study examined the role humor plays on the acceptance of rape myths in college students. This study sought to determine if the type of joke (sexist, feminist or neutral) and the reception method (reading or listening) had an impact on how much an individual accepts rape myths. Participants either read or listened to five jokes from one of three joke categories: sexist, feminist, or neutral. The participants then answered questions regarding joke hilarity and took a rape myth acceptance measure.Type of joke and reception method did not affect rape myth acceptance although participants did find the neutral jokes to …

This study examined the impact of different forms of social media on the emotional and behavioral response to cyber victimization. Via Survey Monkey®, participants viewed a hypothetical post on either Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram. This post mimicked a cyberbullying scenario that targeted the victim’s weight. Participants were asked to consider a number of different responses to the cyber victimization including: severity of bullying, behavioral response (e.g. liking, sharing, blocking, etc.), emotional responses, and coping strategies. The current study examined how physical characteristics influence perceptions others have of people with Down syndrome (DS). Participants were shown one of four pictures, which were an adult male with Down syndrome facial characteristics, an adult male without Down syndrome facial characteristic, a male child with Down syndrome facial characteristic and a male child without Down syndrome facial characteristics. After viewing one of the four pictures with a description of likes and dislikes of the person in the picture, the participants completed a questionnaire examining perceptions of cognitive-behavioral competence, emotional distance- discomfort, and occupational ability. The feminist movement has recently gained much support from celebrities and entertainers. Feminist musical artists have begun to incorporate feminist principles into their music and this added exposure has led to an increase in awareness of feminism. However, no research has been conducted to determine if the current influx of feminist principles into popular culture have been effective at changing the stereotypical beliefs about gender in music listeners. The broad scope of extracurricular activities during childhood and adolescents provides favorable conditions for promoting positive youth development. The current study examined the relationship between athletic extracurricular experiences at the high school and college level and developmental factors learned from these experiences. From this particular sample, participants participating in either a team or an individual sport tended to have significantly higher rates of positive identity experience within their activity compared to those who did not play an upper level sport. This study was designed to determine whether participants would have better recall for names with phonetic properties that matched a paired personality trait. In other words, phonetically attractive names paired with positive traits and phonetically unattractive names paired with negative traits should have higher rates of recall than names whose phonetic properties did not match a paired personality trait, such as phonetically attractive names paired with negative traits or phonetically unattractive names paired with positive traits.
