Judging Emotion In Reason: The Effect Of Emotion In The Anglo-American Legal System, Diana B. Kontsevaia Jan 2014

Judging Emotion In Reason: The Effect Of Emotion In The Anglo-American Legal System, Diana B. Kontsevaia

Diana Kontsevaia

The social construction of emotion shapes communities’ definitions of what is “appropriate” to feel in a given situation. The social construction of emotion is especially salient and imperative to understand in the context of the current Anglo-American legal system. In this system, the perceived cognitive separation between emotion and reason is accepted as commonly held understanding for evaluating people’s behavior, which prescribes a set of expectations that in certain cases comes forth in gendered terms. This study in cognitive anthropology explores how perceptions of the human cognitive mechanism affect how people are treated even in the allegedly most rational parts …

Controlled Vocabulary Standards For Anthropological Datasets, Celia Emmelhainz Jan 2014

Controlled Vocabulary Standards For Anthropological Datasets, Celia Emmelhainz

Celia Emmelhainz

This article seeks to outline the use of controlled vocabulary standards for qualitative datasets in cultural anthropology, which are increasingly held in researcher-accessible government repositories and online digital libraries. As a humanistic science that can address almost any aspect of life with meaning to humans, cultural anthropology has proven difficult for librarians and archivists to effectively organize. Yet as anthropology moves onto the web, the challenge of organizing and curating information within the field only grows. In considering the subject classification of digital information in anthropology, I ask how we might best use controlled vocabularies for indexing digital anthropological data. …

Symbolic Analysis Of Authoritarian Control, Diana B. Kontsevaia Jan 2013

Symbolic Analysis Of Authoritarian Control, Diana B. Kontsevaia

Diana Kontsevaia

Societies are structured by everyday symbolic meanings created by (and for) the population. The state is most favorably positioned to deploy their version of symbolic content. Authoritarian states especially have access to many fields of influence, such as mass media. The control of mass media allows the state unparalleled control over the way citizens conceptualize their society and events that surround them. By applying these ideas, the paper analyzes the symbolic content of the contemporary Russian society. While the symbolic structures have changed drastically since the USSR disintegration, the state continues to create symbols that provide legitimacy to its power. …

The Role Of The Law In The Availability Of Public Transit And Affordable Housing In Atlanta’S West End, Elliott Lipinsky Jan 2012

The Role Of The Law In The Availability Of Public Transit And Affordable Housing In Atlanta’S West End, Elliott Lipinsky

ELLIOTT LIPINSKY

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is a branch of the U.S. Department of Transportation that administers federal funds and provides technical assistance for the support of locally operated public transit systems. MARTA / Atlanta metro area are part of FTA Region IV (the Southeast). FTA would be involved, for instance, in financing the federal grant monies discussed above. But actual regulation of operations (i.e., what MARTA does each day, or what MARTA will plan to do regionally) is more closely regulated by Georgia agencies.

Until recently, the Atlanta metropolitan area had no powerful central agency to coordinate regional transit. The …

Designing, Producing And Enacting Nationalisms: Contemporary Amerindian Fashion In Canada, Cory Willmott Jan 2010

Designing, Producing And Enacting Nationalisms: Contemporary Amerindian Fashion In Canada, Cory Willmott

Cory A. Willmott

Today, generations after the adoption of European styles, Amerindian peoples’ everyday clothing is almost indistinguishable from that of other residents of North America. Until recently their culturally distinct clothing has been mainly reserved for ceremonial occasions such as powwows and religious rituals. This bifurcation of clothing styles and contexts parallels the dichotomy between ‘traditional’ and ‘assimilated’ Native identity that has been imposed by the dominant society. The dichotomy is a double bind: adopting ‘traditional’ identities, Native peoples are cast into a static ahistorical frame, while appearing ‘assimilated’ erases cultural distinctiveness. In both cases, Native peoples cannot effectively stake claims to …
