Integrating The Emotional Intelligence Construct: The Relationship Between Emotional Ability And Emotional Competence, Craig R. Seal, Mary D. Sass, James R. Bailey, Matthew Liao-Troth
Integrating The Emotional Intelligence Construct: The Relationship Between Emotional Ability And Emotional Competence, Craig R. Seal, Mary D. Sass, James R. Bailey, Matthew Liao-Troth
Organization Management Journal
This paper posits that the concept of emotional intelligence (EI) has not advanced as quickly and adroitly as it could have because of a lack of validity studies that combine the two most prevalent models, emotionality ability (EA) and emotional competency (EC). Although prior EI validations studies exist, none have examined the relationship between the primary EA and EC measurement tools – the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test and the Emotional Competency Inventory – University Edition, respectively – at the sub-trait levels with a population of undergraduate and MBA students. Findings indicate that there is no direct relationship between the total …
Evidence-Based Instruction: A Classroom Experiment Comparing Nominal And Brainstorming Groups, Lynn E. Miller
Evidence-Based Instruction: A Classroom Experiment Comparing Nominal And Brainstorming Groups, Lynn E. Miller
Organization Management Journal
Interactive brainstorming groups consistently produce fewer ideas, and fewer high quality ideas, than nominal groups, whose members work alone before pooling their ideas. Yet, brainstorming continues to be regarded as an effective method for enhancing creativity. This paper describes an engaging classroom ‘‘experiment’’ that reliably demonstrates the superiority of nominal over brainstorming groups for generating more ideas. Analyses of data from 105 student groups, collected from 12 classes, show that typical differences between the two group methods are sizable. Beyond lessons about group techniques, this exercise shows students the limits of intuition and the value of evidence-based management practices.

Dynamic Dialogue: A Multi-Perspective Approach Towards Cultural Competence, Daria C. Crawley, Rex L. Crawley
Organization Management Journal
Interculturalism and race relations are becoming more complex as America becomes more diverse. Recent attention focused on universities’ admissions programs aimed at diversifying the student body only convey a segment of campus efforts addressing diversity. Curriculum development initiatives speak to diversity concerns through course topics centered on issues such as race and gender by stimulating conversations among students and the instructor. This article presents two models for integrating dynamic dialogues/conversations about race across academic curricula. These perspectives shed insight into the challenges of communicating in an intercultural environment. One model highlights attempts at integrating dynamic dialogue programmatically and the other …

Applying Technology To Work: Toward A Better Understanding Of Telework, Timothy D. Golden
Applying Technology To Work: Toward A Better Understanding Of Telework, Timothy D. Golden
Organization Management Journal
Technology is enabling employees to work away from the office as teleworkers, where they experience increased flexibility to manage their work and personal lives. The last several decades have seen telework rapidly expand as a work mode, which offers both new opportunities and challenges for employees and corporations alike. This paper covers a brief overview of telework research and practice, in the hopes of providing a better understanding of this rapidly emerging form of virtual work. The paper first describes its growing popularity and the types of telework being practiced, and then reviews some key findings in prior research by …
Management Education Using Social Media, Charles Wankel
Management Education Using Social Media, Charles Wankel
Organization Management Journal
The millennial generation of students are digital natives coming to higher education with extensive experience in social media. Business and other organizations are expecting their recruits to have high proficiency in these technologies, too. This article is an overview of the use of the main social media in teaching. Facebook, blogs, YouTube, Twitter, MySpace, and Second Life are discussed with examples of how they can be used to foster robust collaboration among learners in management education. The movement to richer media such as video blogs (vlogs) is assessed. Caveats for implementing the social media in higher educational settings are noted.

Source-Message-Receiver In Integrated Marketing Communication: A Study Of U.S. Institutional Advancement, Sharee Leblanc Broussard
Dissertations
Because integrated marketing communication (IMC) research has traditionally been problematic, this study used an existing scale to determine that higher educational institutional advancement (alumni, marketing-communications, development) is an appropriate venue to study the process model. Responses from practitioners representing every department within advancement, every regional accrediting body and each of the baccalaureate to doctoral Carnegie Classification levels indicated the IMC process model is both understood and its tenets practiced by practitioners at all sizes and levels of institution. The study was of interest to the practitioners as more than half of the respondents requested a copy of the results. Additionally, …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of An Organisational Communication Assessment Using Frameworks From Cognitive Learning Theory And Authentic Assessment, Marilyn Mitchell
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of An Organisational Communication Assessment Using Frameworks From Cognitive Learning Theory And Authentic Assessment, Marilyn Mitchell
Marilyn Mitchell
This paper evaluates the learning aims and outcomes of a particular Organisational Communication assessment using frameworks from cognitive learning theory and authentic assessment. The assessment asks students to write a paper that describes and analyses the structure and culture of an organisation and makes recommendations for change using the research methods of interviews and observations. It is believed that the assessment develops students’ ability to represent organisational problems at a deeper level since they are researching the values and underlying assumptions upon which organisations operate. Further, it is believed that the students as a group are producing a higher quality …
