Mcafee Scholarships Awarded To Cedarville Students, Mark D. Weinstein

Two students from Cedarville University’s department of music and worship were awarded scholarships from McAfee Heating and Air Conditioning on December 7, 2014, during the University’s annual Christmas Concert. This year the event was sponsored by McAfee.

Kim Tavierne from Bryan, Ohio, and Cody Martin from Locust Dale, Virginia, were awarded scholarships worth $1,500 for the spring semester.

Cedarville University will add a second alumnus to the honor of U.S. Diplomat as Jerica Ward, a 2009 graduate, has been chosen for the Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship at Texas A&M University. She is one of 20 graduate students to be chosen for the prestigious fellowship.

Dr. Frank Jenista, professor of international studies, served as a diplomat for 25 years. He worked in the Philippines, Japan, Indonesia, and New Zealand.

"Giving Tuesday" Campaign Benefits Student Scholarships, Mark D. Weinstein

Following in the tradition of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Cedarville University faculty and staff members joined the nation in “Giving Tuesday,” an effort to raise money for a charitable cause. In Cedarville’s case, it was for a pair of $2,500 scholarship for current students.

According to the initiative, if 65 percent of Cedarville’s faculty and staff made a financial contribution by 5 p.m. on December 2, an anonymous donor would contribute $5,000 to the University for the scholarship fund. Senator Appoints Three-Star General To Federal Commission, Mark D. Weinstein

Lt. Gen. Loren Reno, retired three-star general and dean of the school of business administration at Cedarville University, was appointed to the Federal Military Jobs Commission by Ohio Senate President Keith Faber. Reno was selected for his military service, executive leadership in federal military organizations, and leadership in higher education.

As a member of the committee, Reno will help develop and maintain an ongoing strategy for retaining military agencies. He’ll also work toward preserving private sector jobs in Ohio.

The Village Radio Theater at Cedarville University will be performing and recording a live radio script of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” at the Cedarville Opera House on December 5 at 7:30 p.m. and December 6 at 8:30 p.m.

The production will be performed for a live audience and many members of the audience will have the opportunity to participate with the cast. The show will have live underscore music, and sound effects will be recorded with audience members.

This research addresses the impact of community-based and government organizations on rural livelihoods in protected areas (PAs) by investigating whether benefits of such organizations involved in conservation and community development reach more marginalized members of communities in the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACA) of Nepal. I conduct a case study focusing on two villages within ACA, Kagbeni and Phalyek, examining how local groups interact with each other and with the government in trying to promote equity through the ACA Project primarily through indepth, unstructured interviews. This study, examined whether governmental organizations and nongovernmental organizations in Nepal can effectively work together on eliminating trash and establishing waste management systems in the Solukhumbu region. Historically, the overwhelming presence of discarded items has detracted from tourists’ enjoyment of the Himalayas as well as caused severe environmental ramifications. In the last twenty years however, NGOs and GOs have begun to work together to address these issues and this project looks at whether their working relationship is effective as they often have different objectives and methodology for reaching those goals. The fear of college debt is one of the most talked about stories in the United States for good reason—it can keep students from pursuing a college degree. Cedarville University understands the issue, which is why it held tuition for current students this year.

The Cedarville University Student Government Association’s (SGA) philanthropy committee raised $10,002 for Makarios, a nonprofit school in the Dominican Republic, during SGA’s week of awareness November 3-7.

Makarios teaches students in pre-K through sixth grade in impoverished villages. “The school reaches out to help the students break the cycle of poverty through high-quality classroom instruction,” said Carissa Drum, director of the SGA philanthropy committee.

Cedarville University student-athletes continue to be just as impressive in the classroom as they are in the field of competition.

The Yellow Jackets remain among the best in Division II according to the recently released NCAA Academic Success Rate data.

CU tied for 12th nationally among 313 Division II schools in Federal Graduation Rate at 78 percent. The FGR computes the percentage of student-athletes, who earned their degree in the six-year window from the 2007-08 academic year through 2012-13.
