The presence of multinational oil corporations in Nigeria – which include Agip, Chevron, Elf, Mobil, Shell, and Total among others have come with heavy consequences to the nation’s cultural heritage and identity in the global marketplace. Since the 6 th of August 2009 when the implementation of the amnesty initiative started, there have been reported cases of politicisation of the programme, loss of faith in the regime’s leadership style to drive real change, doubts about the presidency’s intentions and further militarisation of the region’s public space among other contentious issues.
