In this study distance learning library resources and services as provided by member institutions belonging to the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) were examined. The goals of this study were (a) to identify the types of distance learning library resources and services being provided, and (b) to gain insight into the experiences and perspectives of Association of Research Libraries’ library personnel in delivering library resources and services to their distance learning library patrons. Instructing students on how to use the library and the databases in one setting, especially when there is only 50 minutes, can be extremely overwhelming for the students and instructor. This session covered tips that can be used in the interview process with the professor, creating a flipped classroom or blended instruction opportunities to enhance the learning process ( including pre or post-session), as well as demonstrating guides for assisting students in database searching techniques. Finally, the session ended with ways to get buy-in from professors about tutorials and guides used outside the lessons.

There are a variety of barriers that psychiatric clinicians face when attempting to attend continuing education programming. The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological research study was to explore continuing education practices within the health care industry, specifically mental health care, with a focus on psychiatric clinicians’ perspectives on continuing education programming in rural Maine. For the purposes of this research study, mental health care was inclusive of behavioral health care and substance abuse treatment. This paper reports on recent work to introduce a model of scalable, asynchronous library instruction into the First Year Writing program at James Madison University, inspired by the premise: Scalable equals asynchronous. And asynchronous equals boring. Or does it? The authors describe how a small team from Libraries & Educational Technologies at James Madison University planned and built an asynchronous, modular tutorial series, primarily designed to motivate students to engage with the library instruction contained within it. This study examined the potential relationship of accessible hands-on science learning experiences to the development of positive beliefs concerning one’s capacity to function in the sciences and motivation to consider science as a college major and career. Findings from Likert survey items given before and after engaging in accessible hands-on science laboratories show that students who were blind or had low vision (BLV) were more likely to agree with the following items after engaging in accessible science experiences: 1) I plan on enrolling as a science major in college; 2) My educational experiences, so far, have given me the …

Humor is a ubiquitous experience that facilitates learning, social coordination and wellbeing. This study examined how the faculty at the University of New Mexico used humor in its online courses. The process involved faculty interviews, a focus group of instructional online designers, questionnaires and documentation to collect data, and then used thematic analysis and code development to arrive at its findings. The study found that the humor pedagogy at the University of New Mexico has fallen into disuse for online courses because of (1) a hesitation (fear) to use humor, (2) fear of what students would think, and (3), hesitation …

Learning Showcase 2016: A Celebration of Discovery, Transformation and Success

The high level of collaboration between universities allowed this project to be a success for the students and for learning. Limitations such as the 5 hour time difference were challenging but not insurmountable. The usefulness of online and collaborative projects of this sort can effectively substitute for study­ abroad activities that are often not available to older adult students that might have families and jobs. In future runs of the project we hope to extend the semester to an entire course instead of being part of a course.

During fall 2015, Himmelfarb Library and The George Washington University Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) collaborated to increase health sciences student participation in GW’s annual Research Days event. The library launched two new initiatives designed to target both on-campus students and Distance Education (DE) students: six “Ramp Up to Research Days” workshops with both in-class and WebEx components, and a customized Research Days portal within the Health Sciences Research Commons (HSRC) digital repository.

Providing supervision to graduate counseling students using secured online technology is becoming a trend given the advancements in technology, students’ attending extended campuses rather than traditional universities, and convenience. Building a strong working alliance between the supervisee and supervisor is critical, particularly when the parties involved are establishing the relationship remotely. This article analyzes a case involving online supervision through the application of the Supervisory Working Alliance Model and the Individual Psychology Supervision Model. The supervisory relationship is discussed, and issues such as developing a working alliance virtually, the supervisory relationship, multicultural competency, and supervisor/supervisee evaluation are addressed.

In 2015, the Maine State Legislature’s Joint Standing Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs commissioned the Maine Education Policy Research Institute (MEPRI) to study the state’s Essential Program and Services (EPS) K-­‐12 education funding model in relationship to the funding for Maine’s two virtual charter schools. The study was initiated with a review of available literature and reports on virtual school funding in other states. The 1990s saw the rise of third wave feminism, queer theory and the digital age. This paper looks at how the three come together in YouTube video bloggers’ promotion of queer sex-positive ideology. Sex positivism is the belief that all safe, consensual sex is healthy, while queer theory emphasizes the diversity and instability of sex and gender identities. YouTube vloggers engaged in life-streaming profit from the entertainment value of revealing personal sexual information while framing their sexual revelations as healthy, shame-free sex positivism. Despite the various benefits of using CBI, there are several challenges that accompany this mode of instruction, such as computer-based racing. Computer-based racing occurs when learners respond so quickly that frequent mistakes are made. The Summer LibGuides Revamp was a four week series, with each week focusing on a different aspect of LibGuides best practices. Each workshop built upon the last one in a scaffolding approach: the profile box/guide homepage, links, appearance, and accessibility. Many companies train employees on writing emails in seminar-style training sessions. However, in-person, seminar-style trainings are costly. This study aims to create a training program, rooted in the science of training to address these needs. We examine the mechanisms of action by which the training influences performance and intent to transfer. To do this, we call upon several models of training effectiveness (see Alliger, Tannenbaum, Bennett, & Traver, 1997; Baldwin & Ford, 1988; and Kirkpatrick, 1959). Taken together, these models suggest that individual differences will predict affective reactions, which will lead to utility reactions, ultimately leading to learning. We aim …

The paper presents a series of case studies that describe and demonstrate successful collaborations created via partnerships with instructors, departments, and other groups in both multi-campus and online environments at Georgia Perimeter College (GPC) where all three authors worked together as librarians for five years. The case studies illustrate the use of LibGuides in building librarian-librarian and librarian-­faculty partnerships to support teaching and other campus activities. This discussion includes successful strategies for establishing connections and adopting LibGuides as communication tool for collaborative projects.

A qualitative study using transcript analysis was conducted to examine the effectiveness of service learning in enhancing conceptual learning in RN to BSN students. As part of their capstone course in an online program, students engaged in 64 hours of service learning in their local community. The transcripts of asynchronous discussions and journal entries formed the data for analysis. The findings illustrated that the student’s conceptual understanding was enhanced from the service learning experience. Further, the students demonstrated higher-level thinking by linking concepts that could be applied to nursing practice. Service learning reinforced the community-based philosophy of the School of …
