Effects Of Certain Linguistic Parameters Upon The Responses Of Preschool Subjects To Specific Dichotic Listening Tasks, Peggy J. Weber

Dissertations and Theses

Listening, as a communication skill, is an essential factor in the normal language development of the' child. Until recently, however, there has been very little research conducted concerning the linguistic parameters that influence the ability to listen. Thus, this investigation was designed to study the effects of two linguistic parameters, construction and semantic constraints on the verbal responses of preschool children in a dichotic listening task.

Cheyenne Vowel Devoicing And Transderivational Constraints, Richard Rhodes

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "This brief paper is largely an exercise in lily-gilding, building upon Frantz's insightful analysis of Cheyenne phonology. What I will attempt to do in this paper is to rework some of his rules relating to the devoicing of vowels and raise some questions as to whether these rules confirm the need for a controversial device in the theory of grammar."

The Lakota Verb, Christopher Smeall

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "Here I offer a set of ordered rules which attempt to define the set of possible predicates in Lakota, while characterizing the linguistic competence of the native speaker. Sikaiana Oral Stories

The Story of Tehui Atahu

This is a transcript and translation of 12 pages given to me by Edwin Huilani on Sikaiana, in 1981-2. The story is about the founder hero of Sikaiana, Tehui Atahu. The back page of the manuscript is dated August 1972. Although I do not know the source, the story follows closely the stories that I heard on Sikaiana, although there are several different versions with minor differences. The original and translation should be of interest to Sikaiana people and might be an aid in language preservation.
