Unembedded Definite Descriptions And Relevance, Robert J. Stainton
Unembedded Definite Descriptions And Relevance, Robert J. Stainton
Robert J. Stainton
Definite descriptions (e.g. 'The king of France in 1997', 'The teacher of Aristotle') do not stand for particulars. Or so I will assume. The semantic alternative has seemed to be that descriptions only have meaning within sentences: i.e., that their semantic contribution is given syncategorimatically. This doesn't seem right, however, because descriptions can be used and understood outside the context of any sentence. Nor is this use simply a matter of "ellipsis." Since descriptions do not denote particulars, but seem to have a meaning in isolation, I propose that they be assigned generalized quantifiers as denotations — i.e. a kind …

Existentials And Partitives In Malagasy, Ileana Paul

Exploring Turn At Talk In Spanish: Native And Nonnative Speaker Interactions, Andrew Lynch

This preliminary study highlights the demonstrated gains in conversational competence of three Spanish L2 learners who participated in a 10-week university immersion program. The analyses considered turn-taking and discourse structure, comparing the learners’ task-based conversational interactions in L2 Spanish with separate interactions in their L1 English and the interactions of a group of Spanish native speakers. Although the findings suggest that during the immersion experience the learners made gains in L2 conversational competence with respect to pausing and turn length, their development of turn-taking organization and discourse structure reflected an approximation to their own L1 behavioral norms rather than those …

This short article presents a valuable statistical research tool for those involved in analysis of U.S. Supreme Court opinions. Researchers are made available the data regarding the number of pages that the Supreme Court has written each term and provides an easier basis for identifying this page count with the term announced, which is not otherwise immediately evident from the volume number of the U.S. Reports.
