The Impact Of Recordings On Student Achievement In Critical Language Courses, Elizabeth C. Scheyder

This study investigates the relationship between the use of classroom recordings and student achievement in critical foreign languages. Recording classrooms has become popular in recent years with the advent of digital media and inexpensive devices to play such files. It is now easy to create audio recordings of face-to-face classes and post them online. To date, however, there has been little empirical study of the role that these recordings play in students' achievement.

This study compares one aspect of computer-mediated communication (CMC) to oral communication by examining the types of responses that are given to indirect speech acts in a chat room versus the types of responses that are given in a telephone conversation. In this case, the chat room functions as a recitation meeting for an undergraduate course and the telephone conversations are taken from a study done by Clark in 1979. Indirect speech acts are those that have a literal meaning (e.g., “Do you have a dollar?” – the surface question is a request for information) as well as an indirect …

The Use Of Complimentary Closings In E-Mail: American English Examples, Elizabeth C. Scheyder

This paper attempts to address the lack of clear stylistic guidelines for non-native speakers of English writing e-mails by focusing on the particular problem of closings. To assist teachers who are asked to guide students on this issue, the paper examines the complimentary closings that 175 native speakers of American English used in 532 unique e-mails to the author. Patterns are viewed in relation to the sender’s gender, age, and social distance to the recipient, as well as other factors. No closing at all was used in more than half of the e-mails studied, but closings did appear to depend …

Many authors write books and papers about deficits in second language teaching and competence, shining a spotlight on what teachers are doing “wrong” or what students are lacking. In this volume, Diane Belcher and Ulla Connor set out to provide a model that bypasses these negative perspectives and showcases success stories in second (or nth) language learning. The result is a compilation of auto-ethnographies from 18 adults with successful professional careers who were asked to provide their “L1/L2 literacy autobiograph(ies)” (p. 209).
