Australia is facing a significant shortage of foster carers, yet little is known about themain reasons which prevent people from becoming foster carers. This study contributes tofilling this gap in knowledge. A survey of 897 respondents who have never been fostercarers indicates that ¿ at the aggregate level ¿ the main reasons that people do not becomecarers are that: (i) they do not know anything about foster care; (ii) they are busy withtheir own children or with work or family/friends commitments; and (iii) they have notbeen asked by anyone to be a foster carer. However, if we use market segmentation …

The gas-phase CN + propene reaction is investigated using synchrotron photoionization mass spectrometry (SPIMS) over the 9.8 - 11.5 eV photon energy range. Experiments are conducted at room temperature in 4 Torr of He buffer gas. The CN + propene addition reaction produces two distinct product mass channels, C3H3N and C4H5N, corresponding to CH3 and H elimination, respectively. The CH3 and H elimination channels are measured to have branching fractions of 0.59 + 0.15 and 0.41 + 0.10, respectively. The absolute photoionization cross sections between 9.8 and 11.5 eV are measured for the three considered H-elimination coproducts: 1-, 2-, and …

Homo floresiensis was recovered from Late Pleistocene deposits on the island of Flores in eastern Indonesia, but has the stature, limb proportions and endocranial volume of African Pliocene Australopithecus 1. The holotype of the species (LB1), excavated in 2003 from Liang Bua, consisted of a partial skeleton minus the arms. Here we describe additional H. floresiensis remains excavated from the cave in 2004. These include arm bones belonging to the holotype skeleton, a second adult mandible, and postcranial material from other individuals. We can now reconstruct the body proportions of H. floresiensis with some certainty. The finds further demonstrate …

Single-Grain Osl Dating At La Grotte Des Contrebandiers ('Smugglers' Cave'), Morocco: Improved Age Constraints For The Middle Paleolithic Levels, Richard Roberts, Zenobia Jacobs, Michael Meyer, V Aldeias, M El Hajraoui, H Dibbie

Richard G Roberts

Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) measurements of individual quartz grains are reported for Middle Paleolithic (MP) or Middle Stone Age (MSA) deposits in La Grotte des Contrebandiers, Morocco. Single-grain measurements enable rejection of grains that may lead to under- or over-estimation of age due to malign luminescence properties or remobilisation of grains after burial. We identified the former using a range of experimental procedures and objective rejection criteria. Three post-depositional factors influenced the distribution pattern of equivalent dose (De) values for the remaining single grains: the disintegration of roof spall liberating unbleached, older grains into otherwise well-bleached sediments; the intrusion of …

The Geography Of Same-Sex Families In Australia: Implications For Regulatory Regimes, Christopher Brennan-Horley, Andrew Gorman-Murray Jan 2013

The Geography Of Same-Sex Families In Australia: Implications For Regulatory Regimes, Christopher Brennan-Horley, Andrew Gorman-Murray

Christopher R Brennan-Horley

Knowledge of the geographical scope of same-sex families is useful in appealing for relationship and family formation rights. This article analyses the geography of same-sex families in Australia through a critical mapping exercise, offering geographical analysis as a means to assist with their human rights claims. While maps have been used to shore up political and legal power, ‘subversive’ maps can visually challenge dominant views and advance minority groups' constitutive and, distributional politics. We utilise 2006 Census data to map the distribution of same-sex couple family households across Australia, including variations by gender and dependent children. Same-sex families are widespread: …

Long D Nghiem

The aim of this study was to demonstrate the complementarities of combining membrane bioreactor (MBR) treatment with nanofiltration (NF) or reverse osmosis (RO) membrane filtration for the removal of trace organic contaminants for potential indirect potable water recycling applications. Four commercially available NF/RO membranes, namely NF270, NF90, BW30 and ESPA2, were selected for this investigation. Challenge tests were conducted with 40 trace organic compounds at concentrations of approximately 2 ng/L in initial wastewater solutions using a laboratory scaleMBRsystem and a cross-flow NF/RO rig. The results suggest that the MBR system effectively removes hydrophobic and biodegradable trace organic compounds. The adsorption …

The Probability Distribution Of Distance Tss-Tls Is Organism Characteristic And Can Be Used For Promoter Prediction, Yun Dai, Ren Zhang, Yan-Xia Lin

Associate Professor Yan-Xia Lin

Transcription is a complicated process which involves the interactions of promoter cis-elements with multiple trans-protein factors. The specific interactions rely not only on the specific sequence recognition between the cis- and trans-factors but also on certain spatial arrangement of the factors in a complex. The relative positioning of involved cis-elements provides the framework for such a spatial arrangement. The distance distribution between gene transcription and translation start sites (TSS-TLS) is the subject of the present study to test an assumption that over evolution, the TSS-TLS distance becomes a distinct character for a given organism. Four representative organisms (Escherichia cloi, Saccharomyces …

Highly flexible, paper-like, free-standing polypyrrole and polypyrrole-LiFePO4 composite films were prepared using the electropolymerization method. The films are soft, lightweight, mechanically robust and highly electrically conductivity. The electrochemical performance of the free-standing pure PPy electrode was improved by incorporating the most promising cathode material, LiFePO4, into the PPy films. The cell with PPy-LiFePO4 composite film had a higher discharge capacity beyond 50 cycles (80 mA h/g) than that of the cell with pure PPy (60 mA h/g). The free-standing films can be used as electrode materials to satisfy the new market demand for flexible and bendable batteries that are suitable …

Sulfur-Mesoporous Carbon Composites In Conjunction With A Novel Ionic Liquid Electrolyte For Lithium Rechargeable Batteries, Jun Chen, Syed Ashraf, Sau Yen Chew, See How Ng, David Wexler, Jiazhao Wang, Hua Liu, Zhengwei Zhao, Shulei Chou

Shulei Chou

Sulfur coated mesoporous carbon (S-C) composites have been synthesized and physically characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Firstly, the electrochemical properties of the S-C composite cathode materials were tested in a conventional electrolyte consisting of 1 mol/L lithium bistrifluormethanesulfonimidate in poly(ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether to compare them with pure sulphur electrode. The capacity and cyclic stability of the S-C composite were improved. Then the S-C composites were tested in a novel ionic liquid electrolyte consisting of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluromethanesulfonyl)imide and lithium

Aripiprazole Differentially Affects Mesolimbic And Nigrostriatal Dopaminergic Transmission: Implications For Long-Term Drug Efficacy And Low Extrapyramidal Side-Effects, Xu-Feng Huang, Chao Deng, Mei Han

Xu-Feng Huang

Aripiprazole has been used effectively to treat schizophrenia in the clinic ; however, its mechanisms ofaction are not clear. This study examined how short- and long-term aripiprazole treatment affects dopaminergic transmission in mesolimbic and nigrostriatal pathways. For comparison, the effects of haloperidol and olanzapine treatment were also examined. Aripiprazole significantly increased D2 receptor mRNA expression and decreased tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) mRNA expression in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) after 1- and 12-wk treatment, but had no effect in substantia nigra (SN) and nucleus accumbens (NAc). Aripiprazole also decreased dopamine transporter (DAT) binding density in NAc (for 1- and 12- wk …

Phencyclidine (PCP), a non-competitive NMDA/glutamate receptor antagonist, is a psychotomimetic drug that produces a syndrome in normal humans that resembles schizophrenia. The present study investigated the mechanisms of PCP actions by examining the density of glutamate and muscarinic receptors in the rat brain 4 h after a single injection of PCP. We used receptor autoradiography and [3H]MK801, [3H]AMPA, [3H]pirenzepine and [3H]AFDX384 to target glutamate NMDA, glutamate AMPA and muscarinic M1 and M2 receptors, respectively. The major outcome from the present study was an overall decrease in levels of the glutamate AMPA receptor density (F = 14.5, d.f. = 1, p …
