Serving Graduate Students At A Community College Library, Daniel K. Blewett Dec 2023

Serving Graduate Students At A Community College Library, Daniel K. Blewett

Journal of Graduate Librarianship

Even though a community college library rarely attempts to offer the same depth of support found at a university, it can still serve the needs of local graduate students in two ways: through the library’s core collection of print and electronic resources, and through its on-site services, spaces, and librarian expertise. Graduate students need to know that these resources are available to them. The knowledge and ability of the librarian is key to supporting this patron group. This article is informed by the author’s experiences at the College of DuPage, a large comprehensive community college in northeastern Illinois.

Spatial Thinking, Gender And Immaterial Affective Labour In The Post-Fordist Academic Library, Karen P. Nicholson

FIMS Publications

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to use spatial thinking (space-time) as a lens through which to examine the ways in which the socio-economic conditions and values of the post-Fordist academy work to diminish and even subsume the immaterial affective labour of librarians even as it serves to reproduce the academy. Design/methodology/approach – The research question informing this paper asks, In what ways does spatial thinking help us to better understand the immaterial, invisible and gendered labour of academic librarians’ public service work in the context of the post-Fordist university? This question is explored using a conceptual approach …

First Impressions And The Reference Encounter: The Influence Of Affect And Clothing On Librarian Approachability, Jennifer Bonnet, Ben Mcalexander

Jen Bonnet

Whether or not a librarian appears approachable in public service environments is critical to providing excellent service, conveying a welcoming space, and encouraging library users to engage with one of the key intellectual venues on our campuses. This study used an image-rating method to assess the influence of affect and attire on patron impressions of librarian approachability. Findings suggest that librarian behaviors do matter, with specific treatments resulting in increased or decreased perceptions of approachability. These findings not only support common sense assessments that an attentive and welcoming environment is essential to encouraging patrons to engage with librarians; they also …

Scholarly Communication Coaches, J. Steve Brantley, Todd Bruns Mar 2014

Scholarly Communication Coaches, J. Steve Brantley, Todd Bruns

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

The Open Access (OA) movement’s impact on scholarly communication has reached a tipping point. Increasingly, legal requirements such as the Illinois Open Access law (Public Act 098-0925) mandate open access to state funded research, and funding agencies are obliging researchers to preserve data in accessible platforms. In addition, publisher-driven “gold OA” and free-access “green OA” require researchers to navigate complicated options for copyright control. Meanwhile, new OA “scholars networks” offer possibilities for collaboration of which scholars may be unaware. These growing trends have ramifications across many disciplines and they create a need that librarians can fill. Subject librarians trained in …

An Annotated Bibliography On Bias In Library Services And Collections, Denise Dimsdale

Georgia Library Quarterly

This annotated bibliography provides a selection of resources that delve into the topic of bias as it relates to library services and collections in the 21st century. Globalization, corporate hegemony, Internet search engines, and technologies such as virtual reference contribute to an environment where the librarian must be aware of personal and external biases in order to make appropriate decisions. The resources presented touch on ethics, neutrality, social responsibility, advocacy, selection and censorship. This broad spectrum of bias related topics will be especially helpful for librarians providing reference services and collection development in today’s library information environment.

What can you do as a traditional technical services librarian to adapt to these changes and their implications? Get out of the back room.

Planning Serendipitous Liaison Outreach, John Glover, Bettina Peacemaker

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

College and university students, staff, and faculty are busier in 2010 than ever before. Many students work full-time in addition to school. With budget cuts, staff members are doing multiple jobs. Faculty members are being hired as fixed-term, temporary, or adjunct instructors more than ever. People do not come to the library as much as they used to, and they are often in a rush when they do.

At the same time, evolving models of reference service mean that liaison librarians are often sequestered in their offices, working elsewhere on campus, or otherwise not available when their patrons happen to …

Since its creation in 1860, the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) has supplied the nation’s Congress, federal agencies, and citizenry with the information they need to carry out their daily activities (Morehead 1999, 15). Through its Superintendent of Documents programs, the GPO produces and disseminates the largest volume of U.S. government publications in the world (U.S. Government Printing Office 2003).
