Navigating Content And Peer Review In An Online Journal, Kelley F. Rowan
Digital Commons Southeastern User Group (DC SEUG) 2019
This session explores the use of Digital Commons as both a hosting site and peer review and management tool for the creation of an online journal. In 2018 Florida International University (FIU) Libraries launched Athenaeum: Scholarly Works of the FIU Libraries Faculty and Staff. Athenaeum is meant to collect both published and unpublished articles, conference posters, and presentations of library faculty and staff as they pertain to librarianship. The goal is to provide librarians with another discovery layer for their scholarly work and to help new librarians acquire peer reviewed articles by offering peer review before inclusion in Athenaeum. …

3d: Dois, Data Files, And Digital Commons, Kelley F. Rowan, Rebecca J. Bakker
Works of the FIU Libraries
This presentation looks at the emerging trends of implementing Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) and the storage, preservation, and accessibility of related data files for both ETDs and retrospective theses and dissertations (RTDs). The first half of this presentation will explore implementation models for DOIs, including additional metadata work that may become apparent, such as standardizing institutional degrees, as well as the successful administration of a DOI workflow between the graduate school and the library. Participants will learn how DOIs work and their benefit of increased cite-ability and discoverability. Attendees will also learn how to develop a successful workflow in conjunction …
Authority Control In Digital Commons: Why Bother?, Laura Edwards
Authority Control In Digital Commons: Why Bother?, Laura Edwards
EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Authority control provided by Digital Commons is basic. Other than author names, Digital Commons does not provide much in the way of authority control for other fields, such as faculty advisor/mentor names or department names. Standardizing name fields has several benefits, not least of which is the increased precision of reports that institutions can create to highlight the impact of faculty mentorship activities as well as the scholarship output of departmental entities on campus. Institutions that want to ensure the consistency of names across submissions to their Digital Commons repository, especially for self-submitted submissions, must develop their own methods for …

Pipe Dreams: Harvesting Local Collections Into Primo Using Oai-Pmh, Geraldine Rinna, Marianne Swierenga, Emily Gross
University Libraries Faculty & Staff Presentations
Achieve seamless discovery of materials by aggregating disparate data sources into a single discovery interface through the creation of pipes. We will present our process of selecting, curating, configuring, and harvesting from our institutional repository, digital collections, subject guides, and archival finding aids, in order to provide a streamlined user experience and increased discovery. This presentation will share our workflows, including mapping to Dublin Core, configuring the pipes, testing new resources in the Primo Sandbox, and then deploying in our Production instance.

Considerations And Challenges For Describing Historical Research Data: A Case Study, Teressa M. Keenan, Wendy Walker
Mansfield Library Faculty Publications
This case study describes the several challenges faced by Library personnel at the University of Montana as they iteratively made an historical dataset available in the institutional repository in a way that attempted to optimize its discoverability, accessibility, searchability, and usability to current and future researchers. The authors will examine the development of this multi-media dataset collection in order to discuss the specific challenges and opportunities around: describing and making available an historical dataset, repository structures, metadata specifications, and accessibility requirements.

JETstream: Library Newsletter
Although summer tends to be when we might experience a bit of a respite on campus, that was certainly not the case here at the JET Library. The library underwent some significant renovations to two of our instruction rooms, Educational Resource Center, and the Suffolk Extension Center Library. We also acquired several new products and technologies such as the DigitalCommons and BrowZine, which you may read about further in this issue of JETstream. At the start of the semester, we continued our annual tradition of hosting the JET Library Pizza Party to welcome the incoming freshmen, as well as our …

The JET Library kicked off 2017 with an always well-received event, our annual “Beat the Blahs” Party, sponsored by the Office of the President. This year, we featured a dessert table where members of the Molloy Community brought in their favorite desserts to share with everyone. We also held our first JET Bake-off, with Karen Cusumano, Executive Assistant in the President’s Office, being awarded a “Certificate in Excellence in Baking” with her “Classic Sour Cream Cheese Cake.” Requests have been received by the library asking if she will share her recipe! Although we definitely did enjoy a delicious feast, I …

Establishing An Electronic Theses Repository Using Digital Commons, Deborah L. White, Yumi Ohira
Criss Library Faculty Publications
Has your institution mandated an Institutional Repository for electronic theses? Do you feel intimidated with setting up an institutional repository? The authors will share our success and experience of working with the graduate school at two small universities in rural Kansas to establish an electronic theses program.
The repository serves as an Open Access solution for global dissemination. Both Pittsburg State University (PSU) and Fort Hays State University (FHSU) currently use CONTENTdm (COM) as their primary digital repository. In 2015 both FHSU and PSU purchased and launched bepress Digital Commons (DC), a more robust repository. If you seek global discoverability, …

Hacking Dc: Using Dc's Native Features In Unintended Ways, Michael Priehs, Joshua Neds-Fox
Library Scholarly Publications
The Digital Commons software is relatively feature-rich, but as repository managers we often find ourselves thinking, "I wish I could..." This presentation, delivers at the Digital Commons Great Lakes User Group annual meeting at Valparaiso University, IN, outlines two relatively easy extensions of Digital Commons that use its native features in novel ways. One ("Preserving and Tracking Permissions in Digital Commons") takes advantage of the system to manage permissions recordkeeping, and the other ("Paper of the Day Emails") exploits the quarterly archive for an automatic marketing program. Attendees will discover sustainable ways to keep themselves in copyright compliance and their …
Student Scholarship: A Promising Engagement Strategy For Growing An Institutional Repository, M Ryan Hess
Student Scholarship: A Promising Engagement Strategy For Growing An Institutional Repository, M Ryan Hess
M Ryan Hess
DePaul University has recently changed its strategy for growing its institutional repository, promoting opportunities for publishing student scholarship. Unlike with faculty works, student scholarship does not evoke strong opinions about copyright and future publishing risks. Instead, it is seen both as a promotional tool for a department or faculty member and as a win for students. Our successes have included student translations of historical French documents held in our library, a student Law journal, a student Nursing journal, student GIS maps and oral histories of artists. The DePaul library will share its experiences with this strategy so that others can …
