Developing Communication Plans To Support Technology Changes, Jody C. Fagan, Malia Willey
Libraries
Technology change is difficult for everyone, even under the best circumstances. A collaboratively-developed communication plan can ease stress and foster buy-in. Come participate in a workshop where we will show-and-tell best practices and examples of successful communication plans, then offer structured activities where you will develop your own plan, either for an actual project or a sample scenario we will offer. You’ll get immediate peer feedback on your ideas, and will have the opportunity to ask facilitators and other participants questions about specific challenges.

Behind The Scenes, Ready For Action: Cultivating And Conveying A Large-Scale Humanities Monograph Weeding Project With Campus Stakeholders, Heidi Gauder, Fred W. Jenkins
Roesch Library Faculty Presentations
Weeding books is a scary prospect for many librarians and faculty, particularly for humanities faculty, since monographs are critical scholarship in those disciplines. At this library, a renovation in one area created the need for a large-scale review of monograph collections in other areas. Library leadership began conversations with campus stakeholders early on, emphasizing renovation needs and outcomes, careful deselection methods, stakeholder opportunities for input, and sustainable collections. In the Fall 2017 semester, all subject librarians began identifying relevant titles for deselection and communicating with departments about the process. The Humanities librarians found themselves making additional collection considerations and working …

Foregrounding Morality: Encouraging Parental Media Literacy Intervention Using The Tares Test For Ethical Persuasion, Kevin Pearce, Stanley Baran
Communication Faculty Journal Articles
In the United States, children are exposed to literally hundreds of thousands of television commercials a year and virtually every aspect of kids’ lives are replete with commercial messages. The negative effects of this exposure are well documented. Yet, there remains very little regulation or limit on advertising to children beyond that which exists for adults. Additionally, only about 1/3 of U.S. parents wish for stronger controls. This presents a challenge for media literacy scholars and practitioners. Research has shown that, when presented with information about the negative effects of commercial messages, parents are more likely to adopt some form …

Academic Libraries On Social Media: Finding The Students And The Information They Want, Heather A. Howard, Sarah E. Huber, Elizabeth A. Moore, Lisa Carter
Academic Libraries On Social Media: Finding The Students And The Information They Want, Heather A. Howard, Sarah E. Huber, Elizabeth A. Moore, Lisa Carter
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Librarians from Purdue University wanted to determine which social media platforms students use, which platforms they would like the library to use, and what content they would like to see from the library on each of these platforms. We conducted a survey at four of the nine campus libraries to determine student social media habits and preferences. Results show that students currently use Facebook, YouTube, and Snapchat more than other social media types; however, students responded that they would like to see the library on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Students wanted nearly all types of content from the libraries on …

Building Strategic Alliances To Support Advocacy And Planning For Digital Preservation, Erin Baucom, Tammy Troup, Conor Cote, Sara Mannheimer

While the business benefits of digital asset management are well-documented, the benefits and importance of digital preservation are not. Digital preservation is a sustained commitment to maintenance activities which require a system of plans, policies, and implementation workflows. Coordination across departments is helpful for digital asset management, but it is mandatory for digital preservation. The Montana Digital Preservation Working Group (DPWG) operated under a five-point plan for collaboration between organizations. The plan consisted of cultivating shared knowledge, assessing the current digital preservation landscape at each institution, advocating for the value of digital preservation, implementing digital preservation practices, and sustaining the …

Communicating With Library Patrons And People With Dementia: Tracing An Ethic Of Care In Professional Communication Guidelines, Nicole K. Dalmer, D Grant Campbell
FIMS Publications
In both library reference work and dementia care, communication between personnel and service recipients can be both complex and complicated. Professionals in both fields have therefore developed protocols and standards to assist personnel in handling these interactions. In this article we detail an exploratory comparative study that used an ethic of care framework to compare prominent guidelines for reference librarians (American Library Association’s Reference and User Services Association’s Guidelines for behavioral performance of reference and information service providers) with guidelines for workers in long-term dementia care settings (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence’s Guideline on supporting people with …

Presentations
The Thanks for the Feedback Task Force was empaneled to build a libraries-wide professional development experience including learning circles and workshops for formative colleague feedback and constructive handling of ‘conflict’ using the book Thanks for the Feedback by Douglas Stone and Sheila Heen as a guiding text for Summer 2018. Three goals were 1. Develop shared vocabulary on receiving (and giving) feedback. 2. Identify strategies and customize scripts for navigating conversations. 3. Create a tool kit on giving and receiving feedback.
