This study will help interested reference librarians gain an understanding of how this social media site can be used to promote online resources, both those owned by the institution and those available freely on the internet. It will also serve as an example of how reference librarians can build a reference library within the confines of …

Social Technologies And Informal Knowledge Sharing Within And Across Organizations, Jarrahi Mohammad Hosein May 2013

Social Technologies And Informal Knowledge Sharing Within And Across Organizations, Jarrahi Mohammad Hosein

School of Information Studies - Dissertations

This doctoral dissertation is focused on both empirical and conceptual contributions relative to the roles social technologies play in informal knowledge sharing practices, both within and across organizations. Social technologies include (a) traditional social technologies (e.g., email, phone and instant messengers), (b) emerging social networking technologies commonly known as social media, such as blogs, wikis, major public social networking sites (e.g., Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn), and (c) enterprise social networking technologies controlled by a host organization ( e.g., SocialText). The rapid uptake of social technologies, combined with growing interest in their broader social implications, raises pertinent questions about uses for …

Bagan Mural Project – Building A Robust Digital Library On Wordpress, Chia Yew Boon, Ng Kiak Peng

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

With the advent of powerful computing devices, ubiquitous connectivity and affordable gadgets, a large amount of research data is produced every day. In the Bagan Mural project, a history professor had taken many photographs of the mural paintings in the temples of Bagan in the course of her field trips. These photographs are simply stored in her computer folders and are therefore not easily searchable or shareable. Ideally, these photographs should be made available online and come with descriptions to provide users with a perspective on the meaning behind the murals. Over one year, NTU librarians collaborated with the professor …

Getting In Bed With Our Customers: How Did We Embed Our Services To Push The Library Mission At Vaal University Of Technology, Ntombizodwa G. Thomas Apr 2013

Getting In Bed With Our Customers: How Did We Embed Our Services To Push The Library Mission At Vaal University Of Technology, Ntombizodwa G. Thomas

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Emerging trends in technology have changed the academic libraries’ landscape and services. These changes will forever impact and influence how libraries conduct their businesses to satisfy the most important people in their lives; that is; the customers we serve, especially in academic libraries.

In the 21st century waiting for customers to come to the libraries to is no longer working and is also no longer relevant. Getting out of our comfort zones, getting close to our clients, invading their space when they least expect and getting in bed with those customers to satisfy their information needs is now a …

From Hearts And Roses To Gore And Ghouls: Student Engagement At Li Ka Shing Library, Priyanka Sharma, Joseph Kennedy Mar 2013

From Hearts And Roses To Gore And Ghouls: Student Engagement At Li Ka Shing Library, Priyanka Sharma, Joseph Kennedy

Research Collection Library

The Li Ka Shing Library at Singapore Management University, SMU, employs various techniques for student engagement. SMU students are required to attend a compulsory orientation session at the library. A large number of SMU freshmen then attend an intensive library training session as a part of their Academic Writing course. Students also get to know us within the classroom environment – where librarians go to conduct ‘in class’ library training sessions focused on the very specific information and research needs of individual courses. This interaction – even though it is formal and regulated – sets the tone for the more …

Using Facebook To Engage Stakeholders: Developing A Content Strategy To Meet Dynamic Social Media Challenges, Scott Bacon, Amanda Foster Jan 2013

Using Facebook To Engage Stakeholders: Developing A Content Strategy To Meet Dynamic Social Media Challenges, Scott Bacon, Amanda Foster

Library Faculty Publications

Facebook is often used by higher education institutions to increase engagement with the campus population and larger community. Facebook page administrators must successfully navigate Facebook's News Feed algorithm to have content reach the largest possible audience. This algorithm uses different measures of audience interaction when determining how "engaging" a post is, rewarding the more engaging posts by increasing the likelihood that they will show up in a fan's News Feed. This paper will explore the process taken by Coastal Carolina University's Kimbel Library to re-develop our content strategy in order to increase engagement on our Facebook page. The authors recommend …

Twitter As A Marketing Tool For Libraries, Laura Carscaddon, Kimberly Chapman

University Library Faculty Publications

Libraries are using Twitter for a variety of communication purposes. Some libraries use it to listen to what their customers are saying about the library. Steven Bell states that Twitter is a “golden opportunity to connect with members of the library community.” (Bell, 2012) Some libraries use Twitter to make connections to people and organizations within their communities to build community online. (Gunton & Davis, 2012) Some libraries use Twitter to promote programs and services, including those of the library, but also those of other organizations. Twitter can be an excellent way to learn what your customers are thinking, to …

Social Media And Citation Metrics, Linda M. Galloway, Anne E. Rauh Jan 2013

Social Media And Citation Metrics, Linda M. Galloway, Anne E. Rauh

Anne Rauh

Quantifying scholarly output via traditional citation metrics is the time-honored method to gauge academic success. However, as the tentacles of social media spread into professional personas, scholars are interacting more frequently and more meaningfully with these tools. Measuring the influence and impact of scholarly engagement with online tools and networks is gaining importance in academia today. Assessing the impact of a scholar’s work can be measured by evaluating several factors including the number of peer-reviewed publications, citations to these publications and the influence of the publications. These metrics take a relatively long time to accumulate, some are available only via …

Book Review: Using Social Media In Libraries: Best Practices, Todd Bruns Jan 2013

Book Review: Using Social Media In Libraries: Best Practices, Todd Bruns

Todd A. Bruns

Laura Solomon’s delightfully on-target Foreward sums up this book on libraries and social media: She quotes Avinash Kaushik (an analytics evangelist for Google), “Social media is like teen sex. Everyone wants to do it. No one really knows how.” (p. v). Solomon notes that social media is “more about building relationships than it is about promoting anything” (p. vii). This point is echoed in Walt Crawford’s Introduction, which focuses on the truth that libraries are at the heart of their local communities and that suggests that successful use of social media will strengthen those community bonds. Solomon and Crawford’s chapters …

Facebook: Public Space, Or Private Space?, Jacquelyn Burkell, Alexandre Fortier, Lorraine Wong, Jennifer Lynn Simpson

FIMS Publications

Social networks have become a central feature of everyday life. Most young people are members of at least one online social network, and they naturally provide a great deal of personal information as a condition for participation in the rich online social lives these networks afford. Increasingly, this information is being used as evidence in criminal and even civil legal proceedings. These latter uses, by actors involved in the justice system, are typically justified on the grounds that social network information is essentially public in nature, and thus does not generate a subjective expectation of privacy necessary to support a …

Social Media For International Students – It's Not All About Facebook, Grace Saw, Wendy Abbott, Jessie Donaghey Dec 2012

Social Media For International Students – It's Not All About Facebook, Grace Saw, Wendy Abbott, Jessie Donaghey

Jessie Donaghey

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to discover which social networking sites international students prefer for information dissemination activities. As more libraries experiment with social networking to inform and connect with students, there is a need to determine the effectiveness of this strategy for reaching international students. The paper seeks to address three questions: what social networking sites do international students prefer and why? Which sites do they use to socialise and which do they use to gather and distribute information? How can libraries leverage this information to enhance the international student experience? Design/methodology/approach – Information on social …
