In June 2003, Winifred S. “Winnie” Foster donated a collection of clippings, photographs, and archival materials that document her involvement in local civil liberties activities and the development of commercial activities at the Central Plaza Shopping Center. Born in 1927, Winnie grew up in a Quaker home environment. She and other farm girls in rural Ohio often made clothes from feed sacks. As she came of age, she embraced the Quaker tradition of pacifism and commitment for equality. She and her husband, also a Quaker, moved to Rhode Island and supported liberal causes. Like many of her generation, she was …

Mr. Norman E. Jones, Jr., donated a variety of museum brochures, directories, and ephemera related to African American historic sites throughout the United States and Canada. These materials, collected during his many travels, provide illustrative examples of how historic museums and other public history venues commemorate the legacies of African Americans. The library received a subsequent accession of materials in the summer of 2005. Staff merged these accessions into a single collection.

As the trend toward online and distance learning courses in higher education continues, educators and instructional designers continually struggle with efforts to engage and motivate learners located in electronically distributed, asynchronous environments. Studies in the professional literature point to active and problem based learning strategies as possible ways to successfully involve students while raising achievement levels, yet importing such methodologies to the online environment is challenging. Emerging technologies offer hope for the integration of active/problem-based learning with the online instructional environment. One of the most promising of these technologies includes interactive simulation software applications.

The materials in this collection document the programs and activities of the USF St. Petersburg Women’s Organization, a group established in 1979 as an offshoot of the USF Women’s Club in Tampa. Membership included staff, faculty, and spouses at USF St. Petersburg. The minutes, correspondence, and other records offer an excellent portrait of an important campus-wide organization that took shape during the first major expansion of the campus beyond its original site on the peninsula.

QUESTION: How have theorists and empirical researchers treated the human tendency to avoid discomforting information?
DATA SOURCES: A historical review (1890-2004) of theory literature in communication and information studies, coupled with searches of recent studies on uptake of genetic testing and on coping strategies of cancer patients, was performed.
STUDY SELECTION: The authors' review of the recent literature included searches of the MEDLINE, PsychInfo, and CINAHL databases between 1992 and summer of 2004 and selective, manual searches of earlier literature. Search strategies included the following subject headings and key words: MeSH headings: Genetic Screening/psychology, Decision Making, Neoplasms/diagnosis/genetics/psychology; CINAHL headings: Genetic …

Intention To Seek Information On Cancer Genetics, James E. Andrews, J. David Johnson, Donald O. Case, Suzie Allard, Kimberly Kelly
School of Information Faculty Publications
Objective. The public has a high interest in seeking personal genetic information, which holds implications for health information seeking research and health care policy. Rapid advances in cancer genetics research promise early detection, prevention and treatment, yet consumers may have greater difficulty finding and using the information they may need to make informed decisions regarding their personal health and the future of their families.
Design. A statewide telephone survey was conducted of non-institutionalized Kentucky residents 18 years of age or older to investigate factors associated with the intention to seek cancer genetics information, including the need for such information seeking …

Commander David S. Goddard arrived at the United States Maritime Training School at Government Island, near Alameda, California, in 1940. He enrolled in one of the first classes at that facility to train licensed officers for the Merchant Marine. He then served aboard the USMSTS American Sailor when that vessel was commissioned as a training ship in the summer of 1941. After receiving a promotion to the rank of Lieutenant, Goddard also spent time at the Maritime Service Training Station at Port Hueneme, California, during the summer of 1942. This facility, dedicated in August 1941, was modeled on the recently …

Information-Seeking Behaviors Of Practitioners In A Primary Care Practice-Based Research Network (Pbrn), James E. Andrews, Kevin A. Pearce, Carol Ireson, Margaret M. Love
Information-Seeking Behaviors Of Practitioners In A Primary Care Practice-Based Research Network (Pbrn), James E. Andrews, Kevin A. Pearce, Carol Ireson, Margaret M. Love
School of Information Faculty Publications
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the information-seeking behaviors (e.g., information resource usage patterns, access to types of sources and to medical libraries, and use of particular information technologies) of members in a primary care practice-based research network (PBRN) to inform future efforts supporting primary care practitioners in their daily care of patients.
METHODS: Every primary care practitioner who was a member of the Kentucky Ambulatory Network-including family practitioners, general practitioners, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants-was surveyed. The cross-sectional survey included twenty-six questions to investigate the information-seeking behavior of primary care practitioners.
RESULTS: The response rate was …

Microforms: Marriages, Mergers, And Migrations, Anna H. Perrault
Microforms: Marriages, Mergers, And Migrations, Anna H. Perrault
Anna H. Perrault
“Migration” is a term used to describe the reformatting of materials or the moving of information from one format to a different format. The conversion of printed and original documents to microformats was a migration from paper, which was regarded as impermanent, to film, which was regarded as permanent. Today the term “migration” is most often used to denote the conversion of print or microform texts to electronic format to another. This paper begins with a brief history of the development of microforms as a storage and preservation medium with emphasis on the last two decades of the twentieth century …

The Reflection Of Karst In The Online Mirror: A Survey Within Scientific Databases, 1960-2005, Lee J. Florea, Beth Fratesi, Todd A. Chavez
Academic Resources Faculty and Staff Publications
The field of cave and karst science is served by a literature that is dispersed across far-flung topical journals, government publications, and club newsletters. As part of an inter-institutional project to globalize karst information (KIP, the Karst Information Portal), the USF Library undertook a structured battery of literature searches to map the domain of karst literature. The study used 4,300 individual searches and four literature databases: GeoRef, BIOSIS, Anthropology Plus, and GPO Access. The searches were based on a list of 632 terms including 321 karst-related keywords culled from three leading encyclopedias and glossaries of cave and karst science. An …

The Public Library As A Public Forum: The (De)Evolution Of A Legal Doctrine, John N. Gathegi
The Public Library As A Public Forum: The (De)Evolution Of A Legal Doctrine, John N. Gathegi
School of Information Faculty Publications
When dealing with First Amendment free speech issues in the context of public libraries, courts have merely cited the supposition that constitutional public forum analysis leads to the conclusion that the public library is a limited public forum for the purposes of First Amendment analysis. By focusing narrowly on the issue of whether Internet access in libraries constitutes a public forum, and determining that it does not, the U.S. Supreme Court not only misses an opportunity to refine the concept of the public forum in modern-day terms but also somehow implies that public library activities are different from other speech …
