Online teaching is a whole new world for many instructors. The level of support provided varies greatly from one institution to the next. Various online platforms are available, or things can be as simple as e-mailed assignments and exams. This panel will share their online teaching experiences, discussing both what has and has not worked for them. While they do not claim to have all the answers, they are working from a good deal of experience.

Utilizing The Power Of Continuous Process Improvement In Technical Services, Lisa A. Palmer, Barbara C. Ingrassia

In summer 2003 the Lamar Soutter Library initiated a Continuous Process Improvement project. The project’s goal was to reduce time and/or save money by examining and improving work processes. The charge for the Technical Services team was to reduce turnaroud time of certain processes by 50% or more, including (1) book acquisitions (from order to shelving) and (2) implementation of serials title changes. The team utilized value-added flow analysis to examine the processes and then did a six-month pilot project testing their recommendations.

This research bulletin is a companion to ECAR bulletin #18, 2005, "Digital Preservation: A Campus-Wide Perspective" by the same authors. The earlier bulletin outlined the stewardship responsibilities of the academy with respect to administrative and scholarly content. This bulletin explores a proposed model for establishing a digital preservation program in colleges and universities—requirements for educating the institutional community, developing roles and policies, and establishing an integrated technical architecture to support the complete life cycle of digital information. The model was developed at the University of Kansas.

Introduction: During the summer of 2004 Information Services and Resources (ISR) at Bucknell University installed both the Sirsi Rooms software and SCT Luminis Portal software. These web-based portals have allowed us to make profound changes to our web presence and web-based services. This pre-conference covered the first four sessions of the Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program’s Integrating Resources Cataloging Workshop, focusing on electronic resources. Steven Miller defined integrating resources and how to identify them. He then explained initial decisions to make when cataloging these resources. He covered the MARC fields and AACR2 rules that are unique for integrating resources and new to people accustomed to cataloging e-journals. Miller discussed how records should be updated to reflect changes in the resources, including how to update records created before the new rules. He concluded by discussing the difficulties of maintaining records for these resources. …

Just as good captains rely on maps when guiding their ships in unfamiliar territory, so can we chart our own courses from others’ work in exploring variants of the information commons model. Here at Valparaiso University, we rejected the idea of an “information commons area” separated from traditional library services and resources when designing our new building. Joining with our campus IT User Services colleagues and the Writing Center, we consider our model to be an attitude of service that encompasses our organization and includes the entire building. This is a report on what we learned as part of a recent assessment of the Information Technology Help Desk at Illinois Wesleyan University. The evaluation examined the services and operation of the Help Desk. It looked at existing data, and collected original data from a brief survey of our campus community. While a good percentage of our campus community is satisfied with technology services, we found that many, particularly students, want service improvements.

Open access (OA) is becoming a reality, with new cost models under development. The various cost models will have serious short- and long-term implications for libraries and dangerously impact the scholarly communication network. I believe that the adoption of the OA model for journals will create serious instabilities within the existing scholarly publication industry. OA, as a business model, is neither necessary nor desirable. With or without the often-discussed author charges approach, it would be almost impossible to obtain the same amount of total revenue through selected libraries as now exists from the much larger base of library subscriptions. For so long as it has been important to know “what the law is,” the practice of law has been an information profession. Nonetheless, just how the information ecosphere affects legal discourse and thinking has never been systematically studied. Legal scholars study how law attempts to regulate information flow, but they say little about how information limits, shapes, and provides a medium for law to operate.
