Jay Hegde (Letters, 29 Oct., p. 637) asserts that “science students enter graduate school for the wrong reasons” when they seek “wholesale tuition waivers and stipends.” The implication is that students, with their sights set only on the big bucks they’ll rake in as graduate students, disregard that they may be unemployed after receiving their doctorate because of the lack of professional-level positions. An Examination Of The Relationship Between Published Book Reviews And The Circulation Of Books At An Academic Library, Glenda Thornton
An Examination Of The Relationship Between Published Book Reviews And The Circulation Of Books At An Academic Library, Glenda Thornton
Michael Schwartz Library Publications
The primary purpose of this study was to determine if book reviews are useful and significant indicators of potential circulation. Major book reviewing sources were studied to determine if some were more useful than others in selecting books which circulate. six hypotheses were developed and tested. A random sample of books published and purchased in 1987 was taken from the circulating book collection of the Auraria Library and used to test these hypotheses. Detailed descriptive statistics allowed comparisons between the findings of this research and that of other researchers.

What began as a vision and committee charge from the dean of libraries at Western Kentucky University (WKU) ended as a successful faculty retreat focusing on the Internet. For the third year all University Libraries faculty from public and technical services, special collections, and the Kentucky Museum set aside one day before the beginning of the fall semester to retreat from their normal library responsibilities and environment to explore, in-depth, a single topic, and in 1993 the retreat focused on the Internet.

The Anchor: 1993
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). As of Fall 2019 The Anchor has moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

I was a bit perplexed - yes, I was involved with PORTALS, but the problem was, it didn't really exist as anything that I could, point to and say, here, this is PORTALS. Now, a year later, I can proudly say that we have indeed metamorphosed into something identifiable, though the evolution continues. This article will attempt to describe what PORTALS …

Special Collections and University Archives Finding Aids: All Items
In November 1993, Niela M. Eliason, a free-lance writer and St. Petersburg resident, permitted the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library to copy the contents of two scrapbooks in her possession. The “City in Transition” series documented the social and cultural history of St. Petersburg through the voices of civic leaders and common citizens alike. As stated in the first column, these essays examined "a changing community--the people, the buildings, the activities, the attitudes and reactions, the progress and deterioration." This collection contains photocopies of her 123 City in Transition articles, as well as photographs from the St. Petersburg area. Her writings …
