The Big Picture: A Holistic Viewpoint Of E-Book Acquisitions, Ron Lewis, Marie R. Kennedy

LMU Librarian Publications & Presentations

Description of the session.

This presentation details the complete process map of e-book acquisitions at Loyola Marymount University‘s William H. Hannon Library. In this presentation, we extend and update the model used by Beisler & Kurt (2012) for current workflow considerations. In particular, we will highlight an expansion of the paths that an e-book can take, discuss the improvement of discoverability through cataloging services and review, and look at quality control techniques such as access and link checking.

Objective of the session.

While most literature focuses on certain aspects of e-book workflow, this presentation attempts to portray a holistic viewpoint …

Altmetrics In The Library, Anne E. Rauh

Libraries' and Librarians' Publications

Research libraries assist scholars in demonstrating the value of their scholarly output through citation metrics and other measures. As the forms of scholarly communication change, so do the metrics used for assessing them. The services libraries offer must evolve in concert with these changes. This talk will provide a general overview of the ways in which altmetrics complement traditional citation metrics and will explore how libraries can benefit from engaging with a broader set of metrics to reach a wide range of users. The talk will cover the roles librarians can play in helping researchers and institutions understand the benefits …

Library I.T.: Information Technologists Or Information Thought-Leaders?, Craig A. Boman, Whitni Watkins

Roesch Library Staff Presentations

Library staff employed in information technology departments are often seen as support staff, only providing services when something breaks. But what more can library IT staff do to support the mission of their libraries? In this presentation we will explore why library IT staff should maximize their ability to work across various library departments to collaboratively design new library services rather than being relegated to support staff. We will also explore how library IT staff may challenge traditional bureaucratic organization structures to lead change efforts.

Much More Than Storage: Re-Positioning The Repository As A Cornerstone Of Campus Collaboration, Amanda Makula, Connie Ghinazzi Jun 2016

Much More Than Storage: Re-Positioning The Repository As A Cornerstone Of Campus Collaboration, Amanda Makula, Connie Ghinazzi

Library and Information Science: Faculty Scholarship & Creative Works

“Repository” belies the dynamic potential of the IR. Much more than a publishing mechanism for campus scholarship and an archive of college history, it is an opportunity to partner with nearly every entity across campus in order to advance the institution’s mission and goals, to build community by uniting disparate groups around a common purpose, and to call attention to the library’s unique ability to facilitate campus-wide collaboration. More specifically, the IR can play an important role in recruiting new students, strengthening institutional engagement among alumni, enhancing partnerships with the surrounding community, and more. But to come to fruition, these …

Institutional Repositories: Characteristics, Benefits And Software Platforms, Ping Fu, Liu Hua May 2016

Institutional Repositories: Characteristics, Benefits And Software Platforms, Ping Fu, Liu Hua

Library Scholarship

Based on the theories and practices of institutional repositories (IRs),this paper reviews and summarizes definitions, features, development, benefits and software systems selection process. Hopefully it will provide insight and bring inspiration to those domestic libraries and interested parties planning to work in this area. The authors take Central Washington University Library as a case study to illustrate an approach to implement an IR within a short time frame. IRs have many merits, including collecting and showing an institution's scholarly output. There are four or five main software platforms for institutions to choose from. An institution can decide to adopt one depending on its …

Building An Assessment-Focused Information Literacy Program For Agriculture And Related Disciplines: A Collaborative Approach, Katherine O'Clair Apr 2016

Building An Assessment-Focused Information Literacy Program For Agriculture And Related Disciplines: A Collaborative Approach, Katherine O'Clair

Library Scholarship

Students pursuing degrees in STEM fields, including agriculture and related sciences, need to develop discipline-specific information skills in order to be successful in their educational pursuits and to meet tomorrow’s challenges in their future work as agriculture professionals. Oftentimes, information literacy programs are situated in general education or liberal arts courses, leaving the discipline-specific courses to incorporate information literacy only when and where possible. As STEM librarians, we know this is not sufficient, but the challenge of building a STEM-specific information literacy program can be overwhelming, especially when instructors have little time to incorporate any additional content into their already-packed …

Color Me Calm: Adult Coloring And The University Library, Heidi Blackburn, Claire E. Chamley

Nebraska Library Association: Conferences

An activity often reserved for children, coloring books for adults rose from hipster trend to global phenomenon beginning in 2013. Adults flocked to the activity for a variety of reasons, including stress relief, socialization, a way to unplug from technology or even as a way to gain social status by appearing trendy. Participants reported enjoying the tactile, interactive nature of the books as a respite from constant screen time. Coloring books became big business for craft suppliers and bookstores by 2015. Coloring books shot to the top of the Best Sellers list on Amazon and were prominently displayed in book …

If You Build It, Will They Come? Collateral Benefits Of Changing Strategies To Facilitate Faculty Participation In A Campus Ir, Lindsay Van Berkom, Elaine M. Lasda Bergman

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

In October, 2014, the University at Albany Libraries launched Scholars Archive (SA), the University’s Institutional Repository (IR). Our first year of trial and error generated mixed results and low participation by non-library faculty. In year two, we redeveloped our strategy to yield benefits beyond simply increasing repository content. The new approach has three prongs: targeting outreach to deans, department heads and campus wide meetings instead of targeting to individual faculty members; second, we now provide a “full service” model for submitting content instead of merely mediating a “self-service” workflow model; third, we strategically highlight the IR platform’s available metrics to …
