Four years ago, Binghamton University Libraries was presented with an unique proposal. The School of Nursing was planning to take ownership of the OA journal,Online Journal of Rural Nursing and Health Care, and the new editor asked if the Libraries would assist with the editorial and managerial process. Erin Rushton, Web Services and Nursing Librarian, was named Managing Editor. She helps support the publishing system and prepares the pdfs for publication. She also ensures the journal is indexed and preserved in the Libraries’ preservation system. The RDA Working Group, an informal subcommittee of the OPAL (Ohio Private Academic Libraries) Cataloging Committee was formed in 2011 to research the then under development RDA (Resource Description and Access) cataloging code and make recommendations to the entire membership of the OPAL Cataloging Committee on how to proceed with implementing RDA cataloging in the 24 small academic libraries which make up the OPAL Consortium. All of the OPAL libraries share one Innovative Interfaces, Inc. library system and share a public catalog, so it was important to develop some guidelines for RDA cataloging that all of the OPAL catalogers could …

A History Of Collaboration, A Future In Crowdsourcing: Positive Impacts Of Cooperation On British Librarianship, Sally Ellis

This article looks at the varying definitions and usage of the term ‘crowdsourcing,’ including those that insist the term may only be applied to online activities. An argument is made that, semantics aside, the activities known as crowdsourcing, collaboration, and/or citizen science, were in use long before the current online medium was invented and should be recognized not for the terminology employed but for the mutual benefits reaped. The article addresses the strengths of such activities, including user engagement, the accomplishment of tasks otherwise not possible because of budget cuts, and diversity of viewpoint. In this work, the author discusses three ethical issues that have become barriers in the library environment: information privacy, controversial materials, and personal beliefs. The specific issues are covered by the ALA Code of Ethics, which is a general but clear guideline. In the library’s everyday life, however, these guidelines are being challenged by the occasional or consistent behaviors of librarians, users, and administrators. The author has witnessed situations when the above mentioned ethical issues caused conflicts and threatened to challenge librarianship as a concept and the values that come with it. The LIS field is filled with pop culture images, seen and learned by our students. Learning about these images relevant to our students is indeed a task worthy of our time. We are preparing student to enter a profession with their own identity as a professional; pop culture may provide a useful tool in equipping them to do this successfully. We surveyed library students across the country to discover the LIS images they knew before starting their LIS studies and those they know now. This article presents data-rich findings of a comprehensive follow-up study on the patron-driven/demand-driven ebook acquisitions (DDA) plan chronicled in two prior articles from the DDA ebook plan's October 2011 inception. Into the third fiscal year, print vs. ebook usage preferences have begun to emerge, and the results broken out by discipline are presented.

Today’s law schools are threatened by declining enrollments and poor job prospects for graduates. Prominent reformers are exposing dysfunctions within the current system and recommending improvements, but many of these proposals misunderstand academic law libraries and their contributions to student and faculty success. This article examines four possible curricular reforms and suggests ways that law librarians can participate in a comprehensive effort to make legal education more useful.
