Data Curation Is For Everyone! The Case For Master's And Baccalaureate Institutional Engagement With Data Curation, Yasmeen Shorish
Libraries
This article describes the fundamental challenges to data curation, how these challenges may be compounded for smaller institutions, and how data management is an essential and manageable component of data curation. Data curation is often discussed within the confines of large research universities. As a result, master's and baccalaureate institutions may be left with the impression that they cannot engage with data curation. However, by proactively engaging with faculty, libraries of all sizes can build closer relationships and help educate faculty on data documentation and organizational best practices. This article describes experiences from one master's comprehensive institution as it engages …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Conference Presentations and Speeches
Data curation has become an integral requirement for research. To address increasing requirements by funders for comprehensive data management the University Libraries provides data curation services ranging from consultations to creating the interface for a campus wide data repository. Additionally, the Libraries have established a new campus wide data policy to build awareness about the need for data management, preservation and access. To promote open access the policy and data repository interface encourage researchers to make their data publicly available—if possible. The presentation will begin with the development of the Libraries data curation services. Including a demonstration of the Data …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Conference Presentations and Speeches
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries data curation committee has worked to educate Library staff about data curation and to highlight strategic opportunities for library engagement on data curation matters. The UNL Libraries have become central to the support of data archiving on campus by designing the interface for the UNL Data Repository. Additionally, the committee established a new data policy for campus that not only builds awareness about the importance of archiving data but promotes open access.

Research funding bodies recognize the importance of infrastructure and services to organize and preserve research data, and academic research libraries have been identified as locations in which to base these research data services (RDS). Research data services include data management planning, digital curation (selection, preservation, maintenance, and archiving), and metadata creation and conversion. We report the results of an empirical investigation into the RDS practices of librarians in US and Canadian academic research libraries, establishing a baseline of the engagement of librarians at this early stage of widespread service development. Specifically, this paper examines the opinions of the surveyed librarians …

The volume of scientific data is growing exponentially across all scientific disciplines. Competent information professionals are needed to sort, catalog, store, and retrieve this data for future research and education requirements. In response to this need, the goal of the Data Curation Education in Research Centers (DCERC) project is to develop curriculum to educate information science students in the critical field of scientific data curation. Three masters degree students at University of Tennessee (UT) and three doctoral students at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign are completing year one of the program. Each brings to the field of data curation skills …

Managing Research Data : A Collaborative Approach, Darren Gibson, Julia Gross, Matthew Wyatt
Research outputs 2011
To ensure maximum benefit is achieved from the investigations in a collaborative research network, it is essential that research data is managed effectively. However, there is no set model to follow. Normally an institution will establish its own policy and procedures applicable to their researchers and data. This causes difficulties for researchers sharing data across a collaborative network. Edith Cowan University (ECU) is one of fifteen Australian universities striving to create world-class research capacity and capability through investment in the Collaborative Research Network (CRN) project. The CRN project at ECU aims to accelerate the growth of research activity from 2011 …

EScience is a research methodology combining data collection, storage and networking on a massive scale. By its very nature, eScience presents new and diverse opportunities in librarianship. While various academic institutions such as Cornell, Georgia Tech, and the University of Massachusetts are already engaged in well-established projects at their libraries, eScience is still relatively new to many others. To explain eScience and its implications for medical librarians within the Texas Medical Center, The Texas Medical Center (TMC) Library hosted an event on February 13, 2012, called Understanding eScience: A Symposium for Medical Librarians.
