Rda: Loss Of Gmd And Changes Regarding Type And Format, Robert Bothmann
Rda: Loss Of Gmd And Changes Regarding Type And Format, Robert Bothmann
Bobby Bothmann
The pending decision to move to RDA is still a few months away, but some libraries have already begun following RDA guidelines. AACR2’s general material designation (GMD) is not perpetuated in RDA guidelines. Instead, RDA records define the content of the expression, the medium of the manifestation, and the carrier of the manifestation. This session will discuss the changes that will occur with RDA vocabulary, the issues related to display of the vocabulary particularly as it relates to special formats, and the effect this change may have on the display in the Aleph OPAC and in MnPALS Plus.

Have you heard of MARC Edit and wondered what all the fuss is about? Do you have some bibliographic record changes in your catalog you want to fix, but you don’t have global change privileges? Do you have some bibliographic records in Aleph you want to bring up to current standards? Are you getting collection set or vendor MARC files you wish you could massage or modify before you import them into Aleph? This session will provide some case studies with walk through demonstrations addressing some of the questions posed in this description.

Catalogers of yore could rely on the constancy of the handful of formats that were available prior to the digital revolution, knowing that when they woke up each morning a book was still paper and a motion picture was still film. Then one morning things changed and the catalogers of today's world can expect a new quirk every 2-3 months. What do you do when acquisitions gives you slotMusic or some other new-fangled medium to catalog? The PlayAway sound recordings gave you fits and just when you figure it out the PlayAway View comes along. This session will cover some …

Doing Things Differently In The Cloud: Streamlining Library Workflows To Maximize Efficiency, Vanessa Garofalo
Doing Things Differently In The Cloud: Streamlining Library Workflows To Maximize Efficiency, Vanessa Garofalo
Vanessa A Garofalo
Libraries share many common challenges including ever more complex collections, systems, and workflows, as well as increased user demand. To help manage these challenges, today’s cloud-based library management services are offering workflows that save library staff time and discovery solutions that meet users’ needs. Libraries using these services are seeing drastic reductions in the time it takes to perform routine tasks because of the integration between libraries, applications, partners, and data. As a result of doing things differently, libraries save staff time and money while streamlining workflows and improving efficiency. In short, cloud-based library management services like OCLC’s WorldShare Management …

Patrons Cataloging? The Role And Quality Of Patron Tagging In Item Description, William Lund, Allyson Washburn

With the advent of Web 2.0 technologies, user participation in the description and evaluation of content has come to the library. User tagging is almost a given in applications such as Del.icio.us, Flickr, and LibraryThing. The question is whether tagging provided by users with their own motivations is better in some sense then descriptions provided by professionals. Is the tagging provided by the wisdom of the crowd a better description of an item?

Catalogers Unite! Creating Documentation Through Collaboration, Patricia K. Falk, Elizabeth Hertenstein, Stefanie Hunker

Recent changes have forced Bowling Green State University (BGSU) to reevaluate our documentation, workflows, and communication. There have been staff retirements, changes in staff responsibilities, and a new faculty cataloger. Additionally, BGSU is implementing a discovery layer, purchasing shelf-ready books, and adding more electronic resources. It has become apparent that documentation needs to be updated and, in many cases, created from scratch. Collaboration is critical as catalogers are currently few in number and are seeing the need to work with other departments in ways unheard of previously. The creation of a new cataloging manual is vital to the success of …

Based on a motion initiated by the Implementation Group on the Library of Congress Working Group Report, at ALA Midwinter 2010 the ALA and ALCTS Boards of Directors passed a resolution designating 2010 as the Year of Cataloging Research. The Report of the LC Working Group on the Future of Bibliographic Control addressed several goals, including “Work to develop a stronger, more rigorous culture of formal evaluation, critique and validation, and build a cumulative research agenda and evidence base. Encourage, highlight, reward and share best research practice and results.”

A common thread in discussions about the Next Generation Catalog is that it should incorporate features beyond the mere textual, one-way presentation of data. At the same time, traditional textual description of music materials often prohibits effective use of the catalog by specialists and nonspecialists alike. Librarians at Bowling Green State University have developed the HueTunes project to explore already established connections between music, color, and emotion, and incorporate those connections into a nontextual discovery tool that could enhance interdisciplinary as well as specialist use of the catalog.

Making Keywords Work: Connecting Patrons To Resources Through Enhanced Bibliographic Records, Mina Chercourt, Lauren Marshall

Libraries seek methods of maximizing users' discovery of relevant resources. One of these methods is to enhance bibliographic records with tables of contents. Limited previous research has shown a positive correlation between record enhancement and circulation, but the costs for enhancement can vary widely. The authors present their research in which they examined circulation statistics after retrospectively enhancing records for anthologies of literature with low prior circulation. Results indicate that circulation increased for some subject areas, but not others. The authors conclude that this service is of value to our users, and discuss the issues of costs and selection of …

We discuss a project they conducted to identify whether adding table of contents and analytics to certain materials in the collection would increase circulation. They selected monographic series in the Q classification that were titled separately and five or six large series in the Ps for analyzing. The work resulted in significant increases in circulation of the materials ( anywhere from 59% to 186%). The work was labor intensive, but the increased use of the materials made it certainly worthwhile.
