Link resolvers, including Ex Libris’ SFX, use OpenURL to provide library patrons with context-sensitive links, such as the ability to move quickly from a citation in an abstracting and indexing database to the full text. In SFX, information for determining the appropriate links is maintained in the knowledge base, which contains details about a library’s electronic holdings and other information about electronic information resources. This article describes SFX functionality, what the service looks like from a patron’s point of view, and how it can be of particular assistance to a serials librarian.

Interpreting Workplace Learning In Terms Of Discourse And Community Of Practice (Presentation), Adrian K. Ho Nov 2004

Interpreting Workplace Learning In Terms Of Discourse And Community Of Practice (Presentation), Adrian K. Ho

Adrian K. Ho

Based on the ethnographic data collected from the workplace of an academic library, I argue that workplace learning (WL) is a situated socio-cognitive process. It is expedited by knowledge management (KM), which is a collective effort to generate, share, and institutionalize work-related knowledge. KM is inherent in the face-to-face conversational interactions embedded in planned formal training, planned informal sharing, and spontaneous informal learning. When face-to-face interaction is not possible, KM is accomplished through textualization. It helps the members of the workplace acquire new work-related knowledge and integrate it to their common, contextualized knowledge base. The contents of the knowledge base …

A Microscope Or A Mirror?: A Question Of Study Validity Regarding The Use Of Dissertation Citation Analysis For Evaluating Research Collections, Penny Beile, David Boote, Elizabeth Killingsworth Jul 2004

A Microscope Or A Mirror?: A Question Of Study Validity Regarding The Use Of Dissertation Citation Analysis For Evaluating Research Collections, Penny Beile, David Boote, Elizabeth Killingsworth

Penny Beile

Use of dissertation citation analysis for collection evaluation was investigated. Analysis of 1842 education dissertation citations from three institutions suggests the assumption of doctoral student expertise in their use of the scholarly literature may be overstated. For purposes of developing research collections, dependence on dissertation citation analyses should proceed cautiously.

Translation Of Classifications: Issues And Solutions As Exemplified In The Korean Decimal Classification., Barbara H. Kwasnik, You-Lee Chun

Barbara H. Kwasnik

The aim of this study was to describe how the Korean Decimal Classification (KDC), which is based on the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), accommodated translation and adaptation issues in making the scheme culturally hospitable. We made a concept-by-concept comparison of terms in selected sections of the KDC with the analogous terms or sections in the DDC, noting the differences and similarities of terms and structure. Our analysis suggests that, overall, the KDC succeeded in this endeavor, and that the process of adaptation made good use of several adaptive strategies identified in previous work: adjustments to term specificity and term location …

Becoming A Subject-Specialist Librarian, Brenna Helmstutler Jun 2004

Becoming A Subject-Specialist Librarian, Brenna Helmstutler

Brenna Helmstutler

Before pursuing my MLIS, I had a Master’s degree in Counseling and eight years of experience in higher education. As I began applying for positions before graduating in December 2003, I knew that I wanted to work in academic libraries and that my experience would be an asset, but I questioned whether I would get to directly use my Counseling degree. Two months after graduation, I began work as a subject-specialist (liaison) librarian for Counseling & Psychological Services as well as 3 other related programs.

Many academic libraries use the liaison model, in which librarians are assigned to work with …

Issues Surrounding The Administration Of A Credit Course For Medical Students: Survey Of Us Academic Health Sciences Librarians, Jolene Miller Jun 2004

Issues Surrounding The Administration Of A Credit Course For Medical Students: Survey Of Us Academic Health Sciences Librarians, Jolene Miller

Jolene M. Miller

Objectives: For librarians developing a credit course for medical students, the process often involves trial and error. This project identified issues surrounding the administration of a credit course, so that librarians nationally can rely more upon shared knowledge of common practices and less upon trial and error. Methods: A questionnaire was sent to the education services librarian at each medical school listed in the 2000 AAMC Data Book. A second questionnaire was sent to those librarians who did not return the first one. Results: Of the 125 librarians surveyed, 82 returned the questionnaire. Of those 82, only 11 offered a …

Electronic Reserve Services At Unc-Chapel Hill: Faculty And Student Perceptions Of Personal Control, Access, And Service Quality., Charles Cobine Jun 2004

Electronic Reserve Services At Unc-Chapel Hill: Faculty And Student Perceptions Of Personal Control, Access, And Service Quality., Charles Cobine

Charles Cobine

This paper examines the current state of practice and management of electronic course reserve systems. The results of a Fall 2003 survey of 89 faculty, graduate, and undergraduate users of the UNC-Chapel Hill E-Reserves system, which uses Docutek ERes, are presented. Complementary use of course management software, the influence of copyright, and need for copyright management features are discussed. Survey questions addressed attitudes of users toward customer service from Reserves staff; legibility of materials; preferences for paper vs. the electronic; the user-initiated, navigability-related, and environmental limitations of access; information about points of access; printing services; and perceptions of usability.

Zines And The Library, Richard A. Stoddart, Teresa Kiser Jun 2004

Zines And The Library, Richard A. Stoddart, Teresa Kiser

Rick A Stoddart

Zines, loosely defined as self-published magazines, provide a cultural insight to the time in which they are published, making them a genre that libraries may want to consider collecting. Due to their ephemeral nature, however, they create collecting, cataloging, and preserving challenges to libraries. Few libraries across the country have met these challenges and maintain zine collections. Although no two libraries met the challenges in the same way, their unique approaches to zine collections may inspire other librarians to investigate the appropriateness and feasibility of zine collections

Connecting Diversity To Management: A Study Of Career Development Patterns Of Library Managers In Selected Arl Member Libraries And Arl Lcdp Participants, La Loria Konata, Tim Zou Jun 2004

Connecting Diversity To Management: A Study Of Career Development Patterns Of Library Managers In Selected Arl Member Libraries And Arl Lcdp Participants, La Loria Konata, Tim Zou

La Loria Konata

This study focuses on diversity in library management. The impetus for our study is based on Thomas and Ely’s Paradigms for Managing Diversity. The first paradigm addresses the “discrimination-and-fairness” issues in business management and measures success in diversity initiatives in terms of how well a company does in recruitment and retention of minority employees. This paradigm aims to increase the number of minorities employed and correct any discrimination and unfairness in the hiring and promotion process. The Spectrum Scholars Initiative is a good example of this. The second paradigm focuses on the aspects of “access-and-legitimacy” of workforce diversity. Employees are …

Spiders In African Children's Stories, Dorothy Bowen May 2004

Spiders In African Children's Stories, Dorothy Bowen

Dorothy N. Bowen

The first literature that many American children come into contact with consists of Mother Goose rhymes. One of the very familiar ones is "Little Miss Muffet."Little Miss Muffet sat on a tuffet, Eating her curds and whey; When along came a spider, who sat down beside her, And frightened Miss Muffetaway.
